Book excerpt: "Previous studies of Pacific salmon migration behaviors at Snake River dams indicated slow passage at transition pools in adult fishways. In 2001 and 2002, we conducted an experiment to evaluate if modified weirs affected adult salmon and steelhead passage times and route selection through the Lower Granite Dam transition pool. Attraction flows through weir orifices were experimentally manipulated using removable aluminum panels. Results from the 2001-2002 studies indicated a greater percentage of radiotagged spring–summer Chinook salmon passed straight through the transition pool and median transition pool passage times were significantly lower when the panels were deployed. Based on these results, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers modified the fish ladder at Lower Granite Dam in 2006 prior to the migration season. Modifications included narrowing the transition pool and increasing the weir crest height of the lowest eleven weirs. To evaluate the effectiveness of the modifications, we radio-tagged and monitored adult spring-summer and fall Chinook salmon and steelhead as they passed Little Goose and Lower Granite dams and compared their performance to that measured during previous years without modifications in place. Transition pool passage times at Lower Granite Dam for spring-summer Chinook salmon were significantly faster in 2006 than in 2003 and 2004 (non-modified years). Spring-summer Chinook salmon passage times were also faster in 2008, though the results were not statistically different (P > 0.05) than in 2003 and 2004. The other runs exhibited similar, though not statistically different responses. The frequencies of downstream exits from the Lower Granite transition pool to the tailrace for spring Chinook salmon in 2006 and 2008 were lower than in 2003 and 2004. We also compared the difference in passage times by individual fish at Little Goose and Lower Granite dams in an effort to statistically control for interannual variation in river environment. Comparisons of interannual differences in passage times at the two dams indicated that passage times decreased for individual fish at Lower Granite Dam compared to Little Goose dam in modified years compared to the non-modified years. Passage times through the Lower Granite transition pool were also faster in 2006 and 2008 than in 2003 and 2004. However, the transition pool passage times were not as low as those achieved during the experimental weir modifications in 2001 and 2002 and passage behavior only improved for spring-summer Chinook salmon during 2008 with the permanent modification. This difference may have been caused by differences in river conditions among years, differences in fishway hydraulics between the experimental and permanent modifications, or both."--Abstract (page iii).

Book excerpt: "Fundamentally, the salmon's decline has been the consequence of a vision based on flawed assumptions and unchallenged myths.... We assumed we could control the biological productivity of salmon and 'improve' upon natural processes that we didn't even try to understand. We assumed we could have salmon without rivers." --from the introduction From a mountain top where an eagle carries a salmon carcass to feed its young to the distant oceanic waters of the California current and the Alaskan Gyre, salmon have penetrated the Northwest to an extent unmatched by any other animal. Since the turn of the twentieth century, the natural productivity of salmon in Oregon, Washington, California, and Idaho has declined by eighty percent. The decline of Pacific salmon to the brink of extinction is a clear sign of serious problems in the region. In Salmon Without Rivers, fisheries biologist Jim Lichatowich offers an eye-opening look at the roots and evolution of the salmon crisis in the Pacific Northwest. He describes the multitude of factors over the past century and a half that have led to the salmon's decline, and examines in depth the abject failure of restoration efforts that have focused almost exclusively on hatcheries to return salmon stocks to healthy levels without addressing the underlying causes of the decline. The book: describes the evolutionary history of the salmon along with the geologic history of the Pacific Northwest over the past 40 million years considers the indigenous cultures of the region, and the emergence of salmon-based economies that survived for thousands of years examines the rapid transformation of the region following the arrival of Europeans presents the history of efforts to protect and restore the salmon offers a critical assessment of why restoration efforts have failed Throughout, Lichatowich argues that the dominant worldview of our society -- a worldview that denies connections between humans and the natural world -- has created the conflict and controversy that characterize the recent history of salmon; unless that worldview is challenged and changed, there is little hope for recovery. Salmon Without Rivers exposes the myths that have guided recent human-salmon interactions. It clearly explains the difficult choices facing the citizens of the region, and provides unique insight into one of the most tragic chapters in our nation's environmental history.

The first step is to reconstruct a sample of what we had to begin with." The concept he expressedâ€"restorationâ€"is defined in this comprehensive new volume that examines the prospects for repairing the damage society has done to the nation's aquatic resources: lakes, rivers and streams, and wetlands. Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems outlines a national strategy for aquatic restoration, with practical recommendations, and features case studies of aquatic restoration activities around the country. The committee examines: Key concepts and techniques used in restoration. Common factors in successful restoration efforts. Threats to the health of the nation's aquatic ecosystems. Approaches to evaluation before, during, and after a restoration project. The emerging specialties of restoration and landscape ecology.
