Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pedigo and Rice expertly combine basic and applied entomology in this reader-friendly, pedagogically rich text. Assuming only a background in elementary biology, the authors present the major elements of general entomology before moving on to concepts in insect biology and ecology necessary for understanding insect pest management. Both theory and practice are emphasized as readers explore pertinent topics. The authors discuss pest-management issues—both preventive and curative—as aspects of applied ecology, with solutions considering environmental quality, profitability, and durability. Insect diagnostic boxes with detailed information on distribution, importance, appearance, and life cycles of particular species and groups appear throughout the text. Readers will come away with a comprehensive introduction to applied, sustainable pest management appropriate for whatever commodities they must handle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Science of Forensic Entomology builds a foundation of biological and entomological knowledge that equips the student to be able to understand and resolve questions concerning the presence of specific insects at a crime scene, in which the answers require deductive reasoning, seasoned observation, reconstruction and experimentation—features required of all disciplines that have hypothesis testing at its core. Each chapter addresses topics that delve into the underlying biological principles and concepts relevant to the insect biology that forms the bases for using insects in matters of legal importance. The book is more than an introduction to forensic entomology as it offers in depth coverage of non-traditional topics, including the biology of maggot masses, temperature tolerances of necrophagous insects; chemical attraction and communication; reproductive strategies of necrophagous flies; archaeoentomology, and use of insects in modern warfare (terrorism). As such it will enable advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students the opportunity to gain a sound knowledge of the principles, concepts and methodologies necessary to use insects and other arthropods in a wide range of legal matters.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literature of American Economic Entomology The literature of American economic entomology has become so extended that detailed indexes are an absolute necessity; otherwise many valuable records are lost, so far as the busy worker is concerned. The first general index published was that to Riley's nine Missouri reports, and in many respects it is a model publication. It is not only very detailed, but every insect is indexed by its specific as well as its. Generic name, something which the speaker is inclined to think of great importance. The many changes in nomenclature make it very difficult for a person to keep up with them, and the index which lists a species by its specific as well as generic name aids materially in this respect. This publication is perhaps open to one criticism, in its having separate indexes for plants and insects. This is to some extent a matter of taste, and yet the speaker is inclined to believe that the general index, including all references, is superior, since no question can arise as to which index is before the seeker for information. This is something which used to trouble my distinguished predecessor not a little and my hearers are probably aware that all the later indexes prepared under his direction have included every reference. The next general index to appear was that by Professor Forbes of the first twelve reports of the State entomologists of Illinois. This is. Prepared on very nearly the same lines as that to Riley's Missouri reports, and is also open to the criticism of having separate indexes for plants and insects. It is, however, admirably gotten up and has proven of great value to working entomologists, since it renders more accessible the vast amount of information recorded in these reports. Book Synopsis Fascinating Insects by : Pierre Jolivet

Book excerpt: This book highlights the very successful and much diversified group of organisms, the insects, and deals with some interesting aspects of insect life, which are often ignored in entomology textbooks. There are chapters on ants making "slaves;" insect migrations; chemical defence strategies; parental care and love; AIDS and insects; killer bees; and intelligence. The book also includes first-hand experiences of the great traveller-naturalist Prof. P. Jolivet, who narrates the re-emergence of the 17-year-cycle cicada in the USA in May 2004; the occurrence of insects on the great tepuys of Venezuela; marching of army ants in the tropical Africa; and much more. Pierre Jolivet, D. Sc., has written many research papers and books on the beetle family Chrysomelidae. His areas of special interest include the biology of Timarcha, food plants of chrysomelids, and ants-plants relationship. He has co-edited four important books on Chrysomelidae: Biology of Chrysomelidae (1988), Novel Aspects of the Biology of Chrysomelidae (1994), Chrysomelidae Biology, in three volumes (1996), and New Developments in the Biology of Chrysomelidae (2004). In recognition of Dr Jolivet's valuable contribution in the subject, the Fifth International Symposium on Chrysomelidae, held in Aug. 2000 in Brazil, was named after him. K.K. Verma, M. Sc., Ph. D., taught zoology and entomology for over 35 years, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in M.P. Government Colleges, India. He has also specialized in the functional morphology and physiology of Chrysomelidae. He has to his credit a number of outstanding papers published in both Indian and international journals. In 2002, he co-authored a book, Biology of Leaf Beetles, summarizing the current knowledge about leaf beetles. This appropriately illustrated, eclectic volume of short essays, written with enthusiasm, grace and wit by two knowledgeable, broadly experienced insect scientists, will assist the entomologically uninitiated to appreciate the wonders and complexity of the small creatures whose environment humans inhabit, and will expand the horizons of the initiated with refreshing and useful insights into a wide variety of entomological topics. George E. Ball, entomologist, professor emeritus, University of Alberta, Canada This book is written with panache, highlighting the extraordinary adaptations shown by insects. People will eventually awaken to the amazing insect biodiversity that surrounds us. With this book, we are encouraged to follow a fascinating journey of discovery into the world of insects. Christian Mille, entomologist, Institut Agronomique neo-Caledonien, La Foa, Nouvelle-Caledonie This original and unusual book on truly fascinating creatures, not casually dedicated to Jean-Henry Fabre, is not a handbook for identification of insects, or an "official" text of entomology. It is a travel guide -- reflecting the journeys and experiences of the authors throughout the world -- into different aspects of the life of the most diverse extant group of organisms ... I would recommend this book both to students and nature lovers who would find in it much to learn about insects, as well as to professionals. Achille Casale, professor of zoology and entomology, University of Sassari, Italy Fascinating as Fabre's Souvenirs Entomologiques, but here, they are real life-experiences under the tropics, incredible but true, related with talent. Yves Delange, professor of botany, National Museum of Natural History, Paris, France
