Estos sistemas sirven como medio para que los países cooperen a la hora de proporcionar información relativa a la situación legal del pescado mientras hace su recorrido por la cadena de suministro, desde que se capturó hasta que llega al mercado. Muchos países conocen los requisitos específicos de información que contienen los formularios de los SDC; sin embargo, algunos de ellos no son tan conscientes de la necesidad de unos buenos sistemas nacionales de validación y verificación de esa información. En el presente documento se procura alinear y mejorar los instrumentos nacionales de seguimiento, control y vigilancia actuales, así como los sistemas de seguimiento de los productos, para apoyar una aplicación más eficaz de los SDC y fortalecerlos en toda la cadena de suministro internacional. El documento contiene capítulos sobre los antecedentes jurídicos y normativos de los SDC, una introducción sobre las características y los requisitos de los sistemas actuales, así como orientaciones sobre cómo gestionar los requisitos de información de los SDC e identificar los elementos de datos clave a nivel nacional. Por último, presenta una serie de ejercicios para evaluar las capacidades nacionales y los procesos de coordinación pertinentes, incluida la gestión y el intercambio de información.
