Dans cet ouvrage passionnant, Viviane Alleton bouscule quelques idées reçues nées de la croyance en la supériorité des alphabets sur une écriture considérée, à tort, comme complexe et qui serait l'apanage d'une minorité. Les caractères ne sont pas de petites images d'où émanerait un sens, mais correspondent à des mots qui se prononcent et se lisent dans des textes grammaticalement articulés. La transcription des sons en caractères latins, le pinyin, est avant tout un moyen d'enseigner une même prononciation à tous les enfants chinois, quel que soit le dialecte parlé chez eux. Il n'y a pas plus d'illettrés en Chine qu'ailleurs. L'apprentissage du chinois n'est guère plus long que celui du français. Et l'enseignement massif de l'anglais, perçu comme un outil de communication indispensable dans le monde actuel, ne constitue pas une menace aux yeux des Chinois. Loin d'être en péril face au défi à la modernité, l'écriture chinoise a su s'adapter en permanence aux évolutions historiques et techniques, comme le prouve son passage réussi à l'ère de l'informatique.
