Book excerpt: From award-winning author Michelle Roehm McCann comes a young activist’s handbook to joining the fight against gun violence—both in your community and on a national level—to make schools safer for everyone. Young people are suffering the most from the epidemic of gun violence—as early as kindergarten students are crouching behind locked doors during active shooter drills. Teens are galvanizing to speak up and fight for their right to be safe. They don’t just want to get involved, they want to change the world. Enough Is Enough is a call to action for teens ready to lend their voices to the gun violence prevention movement. This handbook deftly explains America’s gun violence issues—myths and facts, causes and perpetrators, solutions and change-makers—and provides a road map for effective activism. Told in three parts, Enough Is Enough also explores how America got to this point and the obstacles we must overcome, including historical information about the Second Amendment, the history of guns in America, and an overview of the NRA. Informative chapters include interviews with teens who have survived gun violence and student activists who are launching their own movements across the country. Additionally, the book includes a Q&A with gun owners who support increased gun safety laws.

Book excerpt: The Republic of Ireland, which declared itself in 1949, allowed the Catholic Church to dominate its civil society and education system. Investment by American and European companies, and a welcoming tax regime, created the 'Celtic Tiger' of the 1990s. That brief burst of good fortune was destroyed by a corrupt political class which encouraged a wild property boom, leaving the country almost bankrupt. What Ireland needs now is a programme of real change. It needs to become a fully modern republic in fact as well as name. This disastrous economic collapse also allows us to think through the kind of multiculturalism that Ireland needs, and to build institutions that can accommodate the sudden influx of migrants who have come to Ireland in the past 15 years. The State should take over the entire education system, for which it pays already, and make it fit for the 21st century. The political system is dysfunctional and is one of the main causes of the debacle we have just experienced. Ireland needs constitutional reform. Politicians have been let get away with murder, and there is a fatalistic sense that nothing can change. The country needs to encourage participation in, and oversight and knowledge of politics, to make people feel that they have a right to challenge the old party machines and to make a difference. It is their country, after all.

Book excerpt: Seeing bully Bootsie Barker get her comuppance is guaranteed to make young readers smile. It's the worst when Bootsie Barker comes to my house. Bootsie's the one who pulls my hair and tears my books. She hates Charlene, my pet salamander. She says that I'm a turtle and she's a turtle-eating dinosaur. Uh-oh, I think I hear a car pulling up. That's her now! Eeek! "The colorful cartoon and wash drawings, filled with amusing detail, perfectly express the terroristic tactics and the narrator's frustration. When Bootsie is on a rampage, even the stuffed animals cover their eyes." --School Library Journal

Book excerpt: What is it about the culture and structure of Parliament House that has allowed sexual violence and harassment to flourish? Jenny was a Labor MP for twenty-three years, a Cabinet minister for six years, and now gets to view the parliament through the reflective eyes of someone who is no longer there. I'm in my first term as a Labor MP. So we have a generation between the beginnings of our time in the parliament. When Jenny was first elected in 1996, I was in my final years of high school. In that time, the number of women in the Australian Parliament has increased, but unfortunately, they are still not being heard. And tragically, they are not always safe. As women, we believe in the power of politics to do good, and as feminists we recognise that politics is about power: getting it, holding onto it, and using it to improve citizens' lives. Women wielding power in Parliament House, women fighting for equality and an end to discrimination across our country, have made their mark and they have caused change. But the underlying problem of men's attitudes towards women, of men believing it is their right to assault or harass women, remains. For this to change, men will have to give up some of the harmful ways in which they use power -- in the parliament and in our community. We are calling for actions to have consequences, and for an end to a culture of political impunity. We want to seize this moment to do the unfinished work -- to make sure that women are not just in the room, but that they are safe there. We say enough is enough.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are your violence prevention and mental health efforts on campus coordinated? Are all your campus professionals aware of the system for reporting information about students who may be in distress or at-risk for harming themselves or others? Is the information reviewed and acted on?Recent campus crises have highlighted that campus administrators will be judged by three things: What the campus was doing before the crisis, its immediate response during the crisis, and the follow-up after the crisis.Born out of the call by Virginia Tech’s Zenobia Hikes for urgent action to stem the tide of societal violence, and the NASPA “Enough is Enough” campaign (www.EnoughisEnoughcampaign.org) that she inspired, this book provides guidance on how to be proactive in preventing violence, and be prepared to provide a comprehensive response to a crisis. Enough is Enough presents first-hand accounts and experienced counsel from professionals who have lived through a violent incident, and continue to deal with its aftermath. They cover violence, suicide prevention, and mental health promotion in an integrated way, and offer a comprehensive plan to create a campus-wide system for collecting information about students at-risk for self-harm or violence toward others. The authors describe how to develop university-wide emergency plans, using the National Incident Management System template and involving a wide spectrum of campus services; how to create crisis response teams and victim liaison programs; offer recommendations about communication and the management of information; and address institutionally-appropriate and sensitive ways to achieve healing and recovery. The book is addressed to administrators, student affairs, services and mental health professionals, and counselors, on all the nation’s campuses, elementary through post-secondary. Book excerpt: Portland, OR October 30, 2020-The writings of a diverse team of eight accomplished authors amplify and relay the messages of protest board-up art and photography as tools for systemic change to achieve racial equality. This fall's release of ENOUGH "Say Their Names ?" Messages from Ground Zero to the World, captures the elevated tone and urgency of expanding struggles for equal justice. The writings offer fresh, compelling and diverse perspectives for readers of all levels of awareness. The remarkable Board-up artwork and photography in ENOUGH "Say Their Names ?" comes directly from the protests around the United States. On these pages, incisive poetry and prose expand on the protest messages of the decade-alive, multiplied and amplified in 2020. Combined with images, they sledge-hammer on freedom's bell, while simultaneously peeling away layers of complacency, indecision, callous disregard, and satisfaction with the status quo plaguing our country. This masterful work is an instrument for initiating nationwide collaborations, discussions and conversations that bring deeper understanding of one another.ENOUGH "Say Their Names ?" connects directly to protest messages and provides historical perspective. For this reason, it is well suited for collaborative discourse in culturally diverse settings to stimulate cross-cultural learning and has the potential to become a catalyst for reinvigorating stalled and failed attempts at concrete change in America. These forceful messages shout a mandate for change as "we the people" refuse to yield to power and authority that maintains and perpetuates racism.

Book excerpt: A GRIPPING, FEARLESS EXPLORATION OF MASCULINITY The effects of traditionally defined masculinity have become one of the most prevalent social issues of our time. In this engaging and provocative new book, beloved actor, director, and social activist Justin Baldoni reflects on his own struggles with masculinity. With insight and honesty, he explores a range of difficult, sometimes uncomfortable topics including strength and vulnerability, relationships and marriage, body image, sex and sexuality, racial justice, gender equality, and fatherhood. Writing from experience, Justin invites us to move beyond the scripts we’ve learned since childhood and the roles we are expected to play. He challenges men to be brave enough to be vulnerable, to be strong enough to be sensitive, to be confident enough to listen. Encouraging men to dig deep within themselves, Justin helps us reimagine what it means to be man enough and in the process what it means to be human.

Book excerpt: Do you suffer from anxiety and don’t know how to control it? Do you ever have angry outbursts and want to stop? In our society, most of us have learned to suppress our emotions. In fact, we often use coping strategies—like shopping, smoking, partying, eating junk food, binge watching TV, even getting angry—just so that we don’t have to deal with them. But by doing so, we only increase our anxiety. In Not Good Enough: Understanding Your Core Belief and Anxiety, Sabrina Trobak uses practical, mindful activities and strategies to help the reader better understand and manage their anxiety. First, she delves into the importance of understanding and then challenging your core belief. Your core belief—your self-perception—affects your present-day thoughts, actions, behaviours, level of anger and anxiety, and how you deal with your emotions. Your core belief is believing you are “not good enough, not important, not valued” or that you are “good enough, important, and valued.” Sabrina states that by understanding your core belief, how it was derived, and how it influences your everyday thinking, you will be able to recognize how your behaviour affects yourself and others, resolve and challenge your unhealthy behaviours, and create a long-lasting change so that you can feel more confident in your daily life.
