Book excerpt: "In order to improve the effectiveness of current marine conservation efforts and coral reef management, it is necessary for coastal managers and related stakeholders to understand the cultural, economic, and social dimensions of people's relationships with coral reef resources. Useful socioeconomic information is needed to improve and comprehensively enhance coral reef management and conservation. Through socioeconomic monitoring, management will identify the degree of importance that coral and related marine resources have for the livelihood of local communities, the purposes and rates of use of different resources, and the potential social, cultural and economic impacts to the local communities if the resources are degraded or damaged. In Thailand, while it is recognized that socioeconomic information is useful for adaptive management and sustainable use of resources, the lack of local capacity for conducting socioeconomic monitoring in a systematic way, like that afforded by SocMon, was identified as a major problem for which this project attempted to address"--Page 1.

Book excerpt: "The initiative to develop these guidelines started in February 2005, following a workshop organized by SPREP and NOAA, which was held to review socioeconomic monitoring efforts already in place in the Pacific. In October 2006, a follow-up meeting was convened, comprising representatives from NOAA, LMMA, SPREP, CRISP, FSPI, GCRMN, and World Fish Center. At this meeting, it was agreed that a set of socioeconomic guidelines for the Pacific should be developed to provide a user-friendly document that synthesizes the existing methods, including Socioeconomic Monitoring Guidelines (SocMon), Locally Marine Managed Area Learning Framework (LMMA-LF, or shortened LF), and Socio-Economic Fisheries Surveys in the Pacific (SFSPI). In May 2007, a workshop was held in Fiji to make final decisions and plans for preparation of the guidelines. In October 2007, the first draft of SEM-Pasifika was launched at the 8th Pacific Islands Conference on Nature Conservation and Protected Areas in Papua New Guinea, followed by an intensive training-of-trainers workshop hosting participants from over 10 countries in the Pacific. The feedback from the workshop participants was used to revise the final guidelines"--P. 5.

Book excerpt: "The applied research indicates that, to improve awareness, park education programs should be targeted specifically to the user groups primarily through outreach programs. Further, the Park's management programs should be highlighted, particularly the beneficial, tangible products and services (benefits) the Park provides to each user group... The closer the tie between reef conditions and business earnings, the greater the users' support for reef conservation." Coral reefs are sometimes referred to as "canaries of the sea" because of their early warning ability to show near-shore oceanic stress. Because of their biological diversity, they are also called "rainforests of the sea." Coral reefs are vital to the well being of millions of people. Coral reef managers and government officials trying to save their valuable national resources have turned to research on coral reefs for help. The research presented in this publication merits a great deal of notice because the output is useful for decision support and training tools in integrated coastal zone management (ICZM). The work on cost-effectiveness analysis has developed integrated economic and ecological models, relying extensively on fuzzy logic procedures to model impacts and effects of interventions within the reef environment. By contrast, the marine system valuation work provides economic valuations of coral reefs, demonstrating the use of different modeling methods and treating key policy issues within this context. This publication will interest coastal zone experts and managers worldwide

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who Speaks for the Oceans? The question has been asked a lot in recent years - just who is looking out for our oceans? Covering over seventy percent of the earth's surface it is the world's largest common property resource, jojntly owned by over six billion humans. It is the foundation for life on earth as we know it. Over the years, many people have spoken about various aspects of our ocean environments and they have spoken to different audiences in many different ways. For many in the public realm, Jacques Cousteau spoke for the ocean. Since his passing, no single voice with the sallle public identity or recognition has emerged. Certainly the many governments bordering our oceans cannot agree on common principles or issues of ocean use and management. We might be tempted think that we do not have an ocean spokesperson or champion, but we would be wrong. Today, the rapidly growing number of scientists working hard to expand our under standing of our ocean realm are the ocean voices we should listen to. At the same time as our scientists advance their understanding of the oceans, we all need to advance our abilities and commitment to communicate on behalf of the oceans with broader and broader audiences who need to be aware of where things stand. Often called "the last great frontier", earth's oceans are vast, widely varied, and are hard to get to, arid into, to do the research we need done.

Book excerpt: This is a new edition of the classic textbook on marine protected area (MPA) management in the tropics, originally produced as an output of the Bali World Parks Congress in 1982. Approaches to planning and managing MPAs have evolved considerably. Major advances include innovative financing mechanisms, partnerships with the private sector and NGOs, and collaborative management between government and coastal communities. These advances have brought new approaches for MPA establishment and management that are more participatory, involving communities through interaction and collaboration rather than prescription. With new case studies and illustrations, the guide comes in a water-resistant cover for field use. It is intended for those who plan individual and/or national MPA systems and gives philosophical context for MPAs along with some basic principles and approaches.
