However, the amount of information extracted is limited which reduces the LBP discriminative power. Recently, some enhancements have been proposed by adding preprocessing stages or considering more neighbor pixels to enrich the extracted feature. In this paper, we propose Uniformly-sampled Thresholds for LBP (UTLBP) operator that increases the richness of information derived from the LBP feature. It outperforms other features in various probe sets of the large CAS-PEAL database for face recognition. Moreover, we collected a database of 25 families to verify the superiority of the proposed feature in the family verification. Results show that using the UTLBP, the total error in face recognition and family verification is reduced up to 8% and 3% respectively comparing to the state of the art LBP. It improves the missing family member verification performance up to 3% where, contrary to expectation, increasing the LBP operator radius worsens the performance by 2%.

This volume provides the latest reviews of the literature and a presentation of some of the best LBP variants by researchers at the forefront of textual analysis research and research on LBP descriptors and variants. The value of LBP variants is illustrated with reported experiments using many databases representing a diversity of computer vision applications in medicine, biometrics, and other areas. There is also a chapter that provides an excellent theoretical foundation for texture analysis and LBP in particular. A special section focuses on LBP and LBP variants in the area of face recognition, including thermal face recognition. This book will be of value to anyone already in the field as well as to those interested in learning more about this powerful family of texture descriptors.

Book excerpt: "Deep learning is well known as a method to extract hierarchical representations of data. This method has been widely implemented in many fields, including image classification, speech recognition, natural language processing, etc. Over the past decade, deep learning has made a great progress in solving face recognition problems due to its effectiveness. In this thesis a novel deep learning multilayer hierarchy based methodology, named Local Binary Pattern Network (LBPNet), is proposed. Unlike the shallow LBP method, LBPNet performs multi-scale analysis and gains high-level representations from low-level overlapped features in a systematic manner. The LBPNet deep learning network is generated by retaining the topology of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and replacing its trainable kernel with the off-the-shelf computer vision descriptor, the LBP descriptor. This enables LBPNet to achieve a high recognition accuracy without requiring costly model learning approach on massive data. LBPNet progressively extracts features from input images from test and training data through multiple processing layers, pairwisely measures the similarity of extracted features in regional level, and then performs the classification based on the aggregated similarity values. Through extensive numerical experiments using the popular benchmarks (i.e., FERET, LFW and YTF), LBPNet has shown the promising results. Its results out-perform (on FERET) or are comparable (on LFW and FERET) to other methods in the same categories, which are single descriptor based unsupervised learning methods on FERET and LFW, and single descriptor based supervise learning methods with image-restricted no outside data settings on LFW and YTF, respectively."--Leaves i-ii.

Book excerpt: Biometrics is the study of methods of recognizing humans based on their behavioral and physical characteristics or traits. Face recognition is one of the biometric modalities that received a great amount of attention from many researchers during the past few decades because of its potential applications in a variety of security domains. Face recognition however is not only concerned with recognizing human faces, but also with recognizing faces of non-biological entities or avatars. Fortunately, the need for secure and affordable virtual worlds is attracting the attention of many researchers who seek to find fast, automatic and reliable ways to identify virtual worlds' avatars. In this work, I propose new techniques for recognizing avatar faces, which also can be applied to recognize human faces. Proposed methods are based mainly on a well-known and efficient local texture descriptor, Local Binary Pattern (LBP). I am applying different versions of LBP such as: Hierarchical Multi-scale Local Binary Patterns and Adaptive Local Binary Pattern with Directional Statistical Features in the wavelet space and discuss the effect of this application on the performance of each LBP version. In addition, I use a new version of LBP called Local Difference Pattern (LDP) with other well-known descriptors and classifiers to differentiate between human and avatar face images. The original LBP achieves high recognition rate if the tested images are pure but its performance gets worse if these images are corrupted by noise. To deal with this problem I propose a new definition to the original LBP in which the LBP descriptor will not threshold all the neighborhood pixel based on the central pixel value. A weight for each pixel in the neighborhood will be computed, a new value for each pixel will be calculated and then using simple statistical operations will be used to compute the new threshold, which will change automatically, based on the pixel's values. This threshold can be applied with the original LBP or any other version of LBP and can be extended to work with Local Ternary Pattern (LTP) or any version of LTP to produce different versions of LTP for recognizing noisy avatar and human faces images.

Book excerpt: Face recognition is one of the most promising biometric methodologies for human identification in a non-cooperative security environment. Several algorithms have been developed for extracting different facial features for face recognition. Due to the various possible challenges of data captured at different lighting conditions, viewing angles, facial expressions, and partial occlusions in natural environmental conditions, automatic facial recognition is still remaining as a difficult issue that needs to be resolved. In this thesis, we propose a novel approach to tackle some of these issues by analyzing the local textural descriptions for facial feature representation. The textural information is extracted by an enhanced local binary pattern description of all the local regions in the face, and the dimensionality of the texture image is reduced by principal component analysis performed on each local face region independently. The face feature vector is obtained by concatenating the reduced dimensional weight set of each module (sub-region) of the face image. The weightage of each sub-region is determined by employing the local variance estimate of the respective region which represents the significance of the region. Experiments conducted on various popular face databases show promising performance of the proposed algorithm in varying lighting, expression, and partial occlusion conditions. Research work is progressing to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed face recognition method on pose varying conditions as well. It is envisaged that a multilane approach of trained frameworks at different pose bins and an appropriate voting strategy would lead to a good recognition rate in such situation.

This chapter provides a complete understanding of well-known and some recently explored spatial domain representations for face recognition. Over last two decades, scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT), histogram of oriented gradients (HOG) and local binary patterns (LBP) have emerged as promising spatial feature extraction techniques for face recognition. SIFT and HOG are effective techniques for face recognition dealing with different scales, rotation, and illumination. LBP is texture based analysis effective for extracting texture information of face. Other relevant spatial domain representations are spatial pyramid learning (SPLE), linear phase quantization (LPQ), variants of LBP such as improved local binary pattern (ILBP), compound local binary pattern (CLBP), local ternary pattern (LTP), three-patch local binary patterns (TPLBP), four-patch local binary patterns (FPLBP). These representations are improved versions of SIFT and LBP and have improved results for face recognition. A detailed analysis of these methods, basic results for face recognition and possible applications are presented in this chapter.
