Book excerpt: Document from the year 2018 in the subject Economics - Foreign Trade Theory, Trade Policy, grade: 1, , language: English, abstract: In the past decade, the Canadian economy experienced stagnation owing to the existence of unfavorable economic trends in the regional and global economy. It is argued that Canadian economy slipped into a recession because of the challenges faced in building its competitiveness in the international trade network. For instance, Canada has been relying on regional trade, especially with the United States which accounts for the highest portion of international exports, and this aspect is linked to the crippling of the Canadian economy. Therefore, internationalization of trade activities appears to be one of the most reliable approaches for aligning the country’s economy with the 21st century global economy. This approach will enable the country to increase its export levels which will, in turn, increase the Gross Domestic Product of Canada. This is probably why Laurin (2013) remarks “There is a growing perception that Canadian businesses need to turn their attention to overseas markets and shift their business strategies to adapt a new global environment’. As such, the current approach by Canadian premiers to establish trade agreements with international trade partners seem to be an amicable answer to economic tantrums in the Canadian economy. The new approach bears significant economic roles in the Canadian economic prospects in the future. According to the Council of the Federation, it is apparent that “strengthening Canada’s trade and investment linkages with the global economy will mean addressing challenges and taking advantage of new opportunities”. This aspect is reaffirmed by Passaris (2013) who observes “International trade is both the heartbeat and the lifeblood of the Canadian economy. In fact, international trade has empowered Canada to side-step economic theory”.Therefore, this paper will give an overview on the economic role of international trade in Canada’s future.

Book excerpt: From the Foreword: In the initial study of this series we attempted to clarify some of the fundamental aspects of a very major issue facing the Canadian economy, namely the changing structure of Canada's trade patterns. Canada's petroleum export policy, the operation of the Auto Pact and the performance of the domestic manufacturing sector are all issues which vitally affect future trade flows. This study carried out by Dr. Charles Barrett....focuses on these developments and attempts to define problem areas by providing objective measures of the signficance of each factor.

Book Synopsis Canadian-American Trade Relations: Problems and Prospects by : Frank J. Cleary
Download or read book Canadian-American Trade Relations: Problems and Prospects written by Frank J. Cleary and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two major economic problems between the U.S. and Canada. These are Canada's actions to overcome America's huge direct investment in Canada and Canada's industrial strategy to reduce export of raw materials to the U.S. and to increase high technology exports. Data was gathered using a literature search and personal interviews with U.S. and Canadian trade consuls and industrialists. The sequence of recent Canadian laws and regulatory actions are examined and reveal that Canada may be on a collision course with the U.S. This could result in a reduced economic growth for both countries. A better approach, which the U.S. should encourage, is to reduce artificial tariff and legal barriers on a cooperative basis. This would enable the natural economic laws of comparative advantage, market competition and scale to achieve improved efficiency and higher living standards for the people of both countries. It is hoped that the strains of economic nationalism can be overcome by enlightened governmental actions and the personal ties and mutual concerns which are stronger than any other two countries in the world. The majority of that trade - over 70 percent - is with the United States. Policies that either limit or encourage foreign trade are therefore more important for Canada than for many other countries."--
Book Synopsis United States-Canada Trade and Economic Relationship: Prospects and Challenges by : Ian F. Fergusson
Download or read book United States-Canada Trade and Economic Relationship: Prospects and Challenges written by Ian F. Fergusson and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States and Canada conduct the world's largest bilateral trade relationship, with total merchandise trade (exports and imports) exceeding $499.3 billion in 2005. The U.S.-Canadian relationship revolves around the themes of integration and asymmetry: integration from successive trade liberalization from the U.S.-Canada Auto Pact of 1965 leading to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) of 1994, and asymmetry resulting from Canadian dependence on the U.S. market and from the disparate size of the two economies. Canada is the largest single country trading partner of the United States. In 2005, total merchandise trade with Canada consisted of $287.9 billion in imports and $211.4 billion in exports. While Canada is an important trading partner for the United States, the United States is the dominant trade partner for Canada, and trade is a dominant feature of the Canadian economy. Automobiles and auto parts, a sector which has become highly integrated due to free trade, make up the largest sector of traded products. Canada is also the largest exporter of energy to the United States. Like the United States, the Canadian economy is affected by the transformation of China into an economic superpower. The U.S. trade deficit with Canada has continued to increase, but the rate of increase declined in 2005 perhaps partly due to the 30% rise in the Canadian dollar since 2002. The United States and Canada also have significant stakes in each other's economy through foreign direct investment. Disputes concerning softwood lumber, wheat, and the disposition of antidumping duties (the Byrd Amendment) have been addressed by dispute settlement bodies at the WTO and NAFTA. The terrorist attacks of 2001 focused attention on the U.S.-Canadian border. Several bilateral initiatives have been undertaken to minimize disruption to commerce from added border security. The focus on the border has renewed interest in some quarters in greater economic integration.

Book excerpt: "The global economy and the rise of new markets hold a lot of potential for Canadian business, especially as domestic growth prospects remain limited. But companies face significant barriers to internationalization, both at home and abroad. To address these barriers, Canada needs to take measures to improve its productivity and transportation infrastructure and open new markets with free trade agreements. ... This paper examines Canada's lagging trade performance and the case for strengthening trade promotion and economic diplomacy. Based on consultations with member companies and other stakeholders, it reviews what Canada is already doing in this area and provides a menu of recommendations for improvement under the following themes: integrating the service offering and connecting it to businesses; unifying and projecting Canada's business brand; strengthening the frontlines; incorporating the private sector into Canada's international development strategies"--
