Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many methods have been proposed for suppressing interference in a direct sequence spread spectrum signal and a number of these utilize adaptive transversal suppression filters to remove a large portion of the interference prior to despreading. This report investigates the performance of predictive and two-sided adaptive filtering systems and presents a method to improve the performance of the predictive filter by compensating for the distortion introduced into the desired direct sequence signal during the adaptive filtering process. It is shown that the predictive filter acts as a pre-whitener and the two-sided filter acts as a power inverter. Additionally, the two-sided adaptive filter automatically performs the same function as the compensated predictive filter. The performance of the adaptive systems is also studied when there is multipath propagation and it is shown that the presence of multipath allows the filters to partially suppress the desired direct sequence signal, resulting in performance loss. A combination of simulation and analysis was used to perform this study. Simulations were performed using the Signal Processing Work System (SPW) from Alta Group of Cadence Design Systems, Inc.

Book excerpt: Because most real-world signals, including speech, sonar, communication, and biological signals, are non-stationary, traditional signal analysis tools such as Fourier transforms are of limited use because they do not provide easily accessible information about the localization of a given frequency component. A more suitable approach for those studying non-stationary signals is the use of time frequency representations that are functions of both time and frequency. Applications in Time-Frequency Signal Processing investigates the use of various time-frequency representations, such as the Wigner distribution and the spectrogram, in diverse application areas. Other books tend to focus on theoretical development. This book differs by highlighting particular applications of time-frequency representations and demonstrating how to use them. It also provides pseudo-code of the computational algorithms for these representations so that you can apply them to your own specific problems. Written by leaders in the field, this book offers the opportunity to learn from experts. Time-Frequency Representation (TFR) algorithms are simplified, enabling you to understand the complex theories behind TFRs and easily implement them. The numerous examples and figures, review of concepts, and extensive references allow for easy learning and application of the various time-frequency representations.

Technology advances and new frequency allocations for personal communication services (PCS) are creating numerous business and technical opportunities. It is becoming clear that an essential requirement for exploiting opportunities is the ability to track the dramatic changes in wireless technology, which is a principal aim of this book. Wireless Personal Communications: Research Developments places particular emphasis on the areas of signal processing, propagation and spread-spectrum, and emerging communication systems. This book contains new results on adaptive antennas for capacity improvements in wireless communication systems, as well as state-of-the-art information on the latest technical developments. Also included are several chapters which discuss the impact of defense conversion on the wireless industry, and related competitive issues. The six parts of the book each focus on a distinct issue in wireless communications. Part I contains several tutorial chapters on key areas in wireless communications. The first chapter is on radio wave propagation for emerging wireless personal communication systems. Chapter two contains a comprehensive study of emerging DSP-based interference rejection techniques for single channel (antenna) systems. Chapter three deals with spread spectrum wireless communications, explaining the concept of spread spectrum, modeling techniques for spread spectrum, and current applications and research issues for spread spectrum systems. Part II focuses on digital signal processing and spread spectrum, two means of creating interference and multipath robust communications. Part III concerns propagation aspects of wireless communications. Part IV discusses the performance of emerging wireless systems. Part V describes the opportunities and pitfalls of defense conversion from the perspective of several U.S. defense firms that have successfully made the transition to commercial wireless. The final section discusses a number of competitive issues regarding personal communication services.

Book excerpt: The demand for mobile connectivity is continuously increasing, and by 2020 Mobile and Wireless Communications will serve not only very dense populations of mobile phones and nomadic computers, but also the expected multiplicity of devices and sensors located in machines, vehicles, health systems and city infrastructures. Future Mobile Networks are then faced with many new scenarios and use cases, which will load the networks with different data traffic patterns, in new or shared spectrum bands, creating new specific requirements. This book addresses both the techniques to model, analyse and optimise the radio links and transmission systems in such scenarios, together with the most advanced radio access, resource management and mobile networking technologies. This text summarises the work performed by more than 500 researchers from more than 120 institutions in Europe, America and Asia, from both academia and industries, within the framework of the COST IC1004 Action on "Cooperative Radio Communications for Green and Smart Environments". The book will have appeal to graduates and researchers in the Radio Communications area, and also to engineers working in the Wireless industry.
