Book excerpt: Bulk REBa2Cu3O7-δ (REBCO, RE stands for Rare-Earth) superconductors find a large number of applications as levitation platforms, vibration dampers, fault current limiters, magnetic shields, microwave cavities and many more. It is necessary for such applications that the material is processed into required shapes and possesses microstructures that support high current densities (Jc) up to large applied magnetic fields. Details of the development of a novel process called Preform Optimized Infiltration Growth Process (POIGP) are discussed. POIGP enables fabrication of uniformly high Jc REBCO and REBCO/Ag superconducting composites with good homogeneity in the distribution of RE2BaCuO5 inclusions in the REBa2Cu3O7-δ matrix. The work described in this book points to the nature and scale of defects required for improving the field dependence of Jc in REBCO products. The defect structure observed in the matrix of YBa2Cu3O7-δ includes widespread, nano-sized, twin variants. Crossing nano-twins are observed when Y2BaCuO5 inclusions are in close proximity in the YBa2Cu3O7-δ. The observed defect spacing and densities account for the uniformly high current densities observed to high fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the flux pinning mechanisms and properties and the electromagnetic phenomena caused by the flux pinning common for metallic, high-Tc and MgB2 superconductors. The condensation energy interaction known for normal precipitates or grain boundaries and the kinetic energy interaction proposed for artificial Nb pins in Nb-Ti, etc., are introduced for the pinning mechanism. Summation theories to derive the critical current density are discussed in detail. Irreversible magnetization and AC loss caused by the flux pinning are also discussed. The loss originally stems from the ohmic dissipation of normal electrons in the normal core driven by the electric field induced by the flux motion. The influence of the flux pinning on the vortex phase diagram in high Tc superconductors is discussed, and the dependencies of the irreversibility field are also described on other quantities such as anisotropy of superconductor, specimen size and electric field strength. Recent developments of critical current properties in various high-Tc superconductors and MgB2 are introduced. The 3rd edition has been thoroughly updated, with a new chapter on critical state model. The mechanism of irreversible properties is discussed in detail. The author provides calculations of pinning loss by the equation of motion of flux lines in the pinning potential and hysteresis loss. The readers will learn why the resultant loss is of hysteresis type in spite of such mechanism. This book aims for graduate students and researchers studying superconductivity as well as engineers working in electric utility industry.

Book excerpt: After the discovery of type-II HTS, focus is to develop these materials for power applications. One of the problems has been that magnetic flux is not completely expelled but rather contained within magnetic fluxons, whose motion stops larger supercurrents. It's known that the critical current of these materials can be enhanced by incorporating a high density of extended defects to act as pinning centres for the fluxons. YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO or 123) is the most promising material for such applications at higher temperatures. Pinning is optimized when the size of the defects approaches the superconducting coherence length (̃2-4nm for YBCO at temperatures ≤ 77 K) and when the areal number density of defects is of the order of (H/2) x 1011 cm-2, where H is the applied magnetic field in tesla. Such a high density has been hard to get by material-processing methods that keep a nanosize defect, except through irradiation. Here we report a method for achieving a dispersion of ̃8-nm-sized nanoparticles in YBCO with a high number density, which increases critical current (at 77 K) by a factor of two to three for high magnetic fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Superconductivity is the ability of certain materials to conduct electrical current with no resistance and extremely low losses. High temperature superconductors, such as La2-xSrxCuOx (Tc=40K) and YBa2Cu3O7-x (Tc=90K), were discovered in 1987 and have been actively studied since. In spite of an intense world-wide research, a complete understanding of the copper oxide (cuprate) materials is still lacking. Many fundamental questions are unanswered, particularly the mechanism by which high-Tc superconductivity occurs. More broadly, the cuprates are in a class of solids with strong electron-electron interactions. An understanding of such 'strongly correlated' solids is perhaps the major unsolved problem of condensed matter physics with over ten thousand researchers working on this topic. High-Tc superconductors also have significant potential for applications in technologies ranging from electric power generation and transmission to digital electronics. This ability to carry large amounts of current can be applied to electric power devices such as motors and generators, and to electricity transmission in power lines. For example, superconductors can carry as much as 100 times the amount of electricity of ordinary copper or aluminium wires of the same size. This Publication presents new research on yttrium barium copper oxide superconductors, often abbreviated YBCO, which is a chemical compound with the formula YBa2Cu3O7. This material, a famous 'high-temperature superconductor', achieved prominence because it was the first material to superconduct above the boiling point of nitrogen. All materials developed before YBCO became superconducting only at temperatures near the boiling points of liquid helium or liquid hydrogen (Tb = 20.1 K). The significance of the discovery of YBCO is the breakthrough in the refrigerant used to cool the material to below the critical temperature.

Book excerpt: The microstructure of the melted textured bulk YBCO materials with different vol% 211 were investigated. The homogeneity of 211 distribution was greatly improved by using a solution precipitated 211 powder in preparation. Crack spacings, were found to decrease with increasing vol% of the 211 particles. The 211 particles were found to be effective in holding crack propagation. Hardness and toughness measurements will be performed. The measured critical current density in high fields in epitaxial thin films of YBCO were compared with both the flux pinning and pair breaking models. This work was published Nov, 92. High quality YBCO films were grown on spinel and garnet. These substrate materials can interface between the superconducting and semiconducting materials for novel devices. This paper was submitted to APL ... Superconductors, Critical currents, Dispersions, Thin films, Flux-pinning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mitigating climate change, clean environment, global peace, financial growth, and future development of the world require new materials that improve the quality of life. Superconductivity, in general, allows perfect current transmission without losses. This makes it a valuable resource for sustainability in several aspects. High-temperature superconducting (HTSC) materials will be crucial for sustainable everyday applications and more attractive for the United Nations’ SDGs. Superconducting magnets can be used as high-field magnets in magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear magnetic resonance, water purification, magnetic drug delivery, etc. Hunger can be partly avoided if there is sustainability in agriculture. In the future, DC electric energy from solar plants in Africa could be transported worldwide, especially to cold countries, using superconducting cables. Superconducting technology is an efficient way to create sustainability as well as reduce greenhouse gases. This book presents the latest global achievements in the processing and applications of high-Tc superconductors and discusses the usefulness of the SDGs. It summarizes the related advances in materials science and developments with respect to the SDGs. The book also covers large-scale applications of HTSC materials, which will be connected to the SDGs, addressed by several eminent scientists, including Prof. M. Murakami, president, Shibaura Institute of Technology, Japan; Prof. D. Cardwell, pro-vice chancellor, University of Cambridge, UK; and Prof. N. Long, director, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand.

Book excerpt: A wide range of progress in materials development [single crystals, ceramics, thin films, wire and tapes] is reported in the 169 papers in this volume. The main focus of the papers is in attaining a better understanding of the relationship between microstructure and electrical properties. Invited papers cover topics such as the effects of substitution and doping; multilayers; nanostructure characterisation; electric field effects in High Tc Superconductors [HTS]; surface stability; critical currents; flux pinning and magnetooptic imaging of flux patterns; effects of irradiation induced defects; properties and preparation of materials; microwave properties and electronic devices. A clearly broadened basis for understanding processes and mechanisms in [HTS] is portrayed. Appreciable progress has been achieved in the reproducible manufacturing of high quality materials supported by very efficient methods in microstructural analysis. This essential improvement is reflected in the increased number of practical devices encouraging the use of HTS in applications for electronics and power engineering, all of which are reviewed in depth in this work.

Book excerpt: Research into high-Tc materials demands the co-operation of physicists, chemists and materials scientists to discover the best solutions to the most important challenges presented by the field. In the fifth annual Workshop on High Temperature Superconductors and Novel Inorganic Materials Engineering, the topic is extended beyond high-Tc superconductivity to include other advanced oxide materials, mainly colossal magnetoresistance materials, which are closely related to the ceramic superconductors. This book covers the synthesis, characterisation (both structural and physical) and engineering of this class of materials.
