Book excerpt: This book of oral tales from the south Indian region of Kannada represents the culmination of a lifetime of research by A. K. Ramanujan, one of the most revered scholars and writers of his time. The result of over three decades' labor, this long-awaited collection makes available for the first time a wealth of folktales from a region that has not yet been adequately represented in world literature. Ramanujan's skill as a translator, his graceful writing style, and his profound love and understanding of the subject enrich the tales that he collected, translated, and interpreted. With a written literature recorded from about 800 A.D., Kannada is rich in mythology, devotional and secular poetry, and more recently novels and plays. Ramanujan, born in Mysore in 1929, had an intimate knowledge of the language. In the 1950s, when working as a college lecturer, he began collecting these tales from everyone he could--servants, aunts, schoolteachers, children, carpenters, tailors. In 1970 he began translating and interpreting the tales, a project that absorbed him for the next three decades. When Ramanujan died in 1993, the translations were complete and he had written notes for about half of the tales. With its unsentimental sympathies, its laughter, and its delightfully vivid sense of detail, the collection stands as a significant and moving monument to Ramanujan's memory as a scholar and writer.

Book excerpt: I Will Survive is the story of Gloria Gaynor, America's "Queen of Disco." It is the story of riches and fame, despair, and finally salvation. Her meteoric rise to stardom in the mid-1970s was nothing short of phenomenal, and hits poured forth that pushed her to the top of the charts, including "Honey Bee," "I Got You Under My Skin," "Never Can Say Goodbye," and the song that has immortalized her, "I Will Survive," which became a #1 international gold seller. With that song, Gloria heralded the international rise of disco that became synonymous with a way of life in the fast lane - the sweaty bodies at Studio 54, the lines of cocaine, the indescribable feeling that you could always be at the top of your game and never come down. But down she came after her early stardom, and problems followed in the wake, including the death of her mother, whose love had anchored the young singer, as well as constant battles with weight, drugs, and alcohol. While her fans always imagined her to be rich, her personal finances collapsed due to poor management; and while many envied her, she felt completely empty inside. In the early 1980s, sustained by her marriage to music publisher Linwood Simon, Gloria took three years off and reflected upon her life. She visited churches and revisited her mother's old Bible. Discovering the world of gospel, she made a commitment to Christ that sustains her to this day.

Book excerpt: This book is a collection of dark poems written over a span of seven years. It talks about an apocalypse which is highly personal in nature. The doom which came suddenly, without any prior notice, and flooded everything. It was the dusk when the sun set and never rose again. The poems here are subjective, surreal and prone to individual perception, ranging from passionate poetic epiphanies to cryptic imageries and references. They offer a multi-layered meaning and expose themselves depending upon how much the readers wish to probe into.

It is aimed at the serious listener, that is, someone who may not have had any formal lessons himself in this performing art, but who, nevertheless, has picked up an initial interest in listening to classical music, and is, therefore, seeking to know more about its underlying structure, system and traditions. By explaining in a straightforward and extremely readable style, the basic features of Indian music, how time and melody are structured, the main principles of r?ga delineation and development, and the various genres and styles of vocal as well as instrumental performances, the book aims to enhance the serious listener’s understanding of Hindustani music, and heighten his appreciation of this art form. This book includes a glossary of musical terms, a select discography and a select bibliography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sultana's Dream is a classic work of Bengali science fiction and one of the first examples of feminist science fiction. This short story was written in 1905 by Rokeya Sakhawat Hussain, a Muslim feminist, writer and social reformer who lived in British India, in what is now Bangladesh. The word sultana here means a female sultan, a Muslim ruler.Sultana's Dream was originally published in English in The Indian Ladies Magazine of Madras (1905), and is considered part of Bengali literature. It depicts a feminist utopia in which women run everything and men are secluded, in a mirror-image of the traditional practice of purdah. The women are aided by technology which enables laborless farming and flying cars; the female scientists have discovered how to use solar power and control the weather. Crime is eliminated, since men were responsible for all of it. The workday is only two hours long, since men used to waste six hours of each day in smoking. The religion is one of love and truth. Purity is held above all, such that the list of "sacred relations" (mahram) is widely extended.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Secrets of the Self is a book-length, philosophical poem rooted in metaphysical thought and ideology, as well as Islamic theology. Originally published in 1915, the poem speaks of the "Self" in relation to the universe, how it is the inner power and soul of each individual human. It instructs on how to improve the Self through Love and willpower, which can then help one control the forces within the universe. The poem includes stories that illustrate its points and promotes the spread of Islamic ideals. MUHAMMAD IQBAL (1877-1938) was a poet, prophet, and politician in British India. Born in Sialkot, Punjab, Iqbal converted to Islam with his family as a child. He studied literature and law at Cambridge, Munich, and Heidelberg before starting his own law practice and concentrating on his scholarly writing, which he authored primarily in Persian. Many of Iqbal's works promote Islamic revival, especially in South Asia, and he was a well-known leader of the All India Muslim League. Today, he is recognized as the official poet of Pakistan, and his birthday is celebrated as a national holiday.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The whole purpose behind writing this book and sharing my thoughts with the world is to make life better, help people become more reasonable in their approach, remove negative vibes and solve problems in human relations that spoil the joy of life. I have touched upon various aspects of life, like its creation and purpose, common conflicts and their reasons, how to make human life less complicated and I have put great deal of emphasis on parenting. In the first part, I have mentioned about how a good entity designed and created this universe and life, and what could have been the possible reason behind it. In the second part the other side of my thought gets manifested, where it says this universe was conceptualized and brought about by a negative element, also explains the possible reason behind it. Hence the title, Dizygotic Twins, which is basically the medical term for non-identical twins. Both of them are my brain child. Definitely all these are largely my imaginations based on life events, and on both the versions, I have tried to give some solutions at my level, which also includes discussion about Anti-Natalism. That’s why I called it a Fiction Of Facts! One might find a layer of rawness in my style of writing due to the fact I am a rookie when it comes writing. This is my maiden work in writing, so kindly pardon the lack of finesse which you may witness while reading. My mind and heart were brimming with these thoughts and concepts for decades, I couldn’t hold them back, and hence I just poured them all out despite being a complete naïve in literature. Hope this book makes some sense to the reader. Many Thanks
