Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The bringing of Spanish seventeenth-century verse plays to the contemporary English-speaking stage involves a number of fundamental questions. Are verse translations preferable to prose, and if so, what kind of verse? To what degree should translations aim to be 'faithful'? Which kinds of plays 'work', and which do not? Which values and customs of the past present no difficulties for contemporary audiences, and which need to be decoded in performance?Which kinds of staging are suitable, and which are not? To what degree, if any, should one aim for 'authenticity' in staging? In this volume, a group of translators, directors, and scholars explores these and related questions."--Jacket
Book Synopsis Translations of the American Plays of Lope de Vega by : Lope de Vega

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translation into English verse, with facing annotated Castilian of Lope de Vega's three American plays. It is with joy and sadness simultaneously that I write this preface to this elegant and superb contribution to the theater of the Spanish Golden Age: With sadness because its author, Kenneth A. Stackhouse, has passed on to a better world; with joy because Ken's beloved wife, Marcia, asked me subsequently to write this preface, unaware perhaps that Ken had earlier asked my advice on this project. If this is not synchronicity - dare I say Providence - I don't know what is. I have perused Ken's informed and meticulous study, which clarifies many issues with respect to the three Lope de Vega plays on what used to be called the Conquest and is now termed the Encounter of America and Spain. I have also perused, with awe and admiration, Professor Stackhouse's superb verse translations of La famosa comedia del Nuevo Mundo descubierto por Cristobal Colon, (The Famous Drama of the Discovery of the New World By Christopher Columbus), El Arauco domado (The Conquest of Araucania), and El Brasil restituido (Brazil Restored). To date, only the first work has had the benefit of a critical text a

Book excerpt: Triple bill of festive dramas. 'The Christmas Shoes' (2002) revolves around the intertwining of two stories. In the first, Rob Lowe plays Robert Layton, a workaholic lawyer who is drifting away from his wife, Kate (Maria del Mar), and his family. In the second, a little boy, Nathan (Max Morrow), tries to raise the cash to buy a pair of red shoes for his mother, who is dying from a congenital heart defect. Robert's path seems set to cross with Nathan's; will the two have lessons to teach each other about life? 'A Christmas Romance' (1994) stars Olivia Newton-John as Julia Stonecypher, a woman who has just lost her husband. A bleak Christmas appears in store for her and her two daughters when bank manager Brian (Gregory Harrison) arrives to tell them that their house will be repossessed. However, when a snowstorm delays his departure, Brian is forced to seek refuge with the family and the iciness between the two camps swiftly begins to thaw. In 'I'll Be Home for Christmas' (1997) part-time mayor Sarah (Ann Jillian) heads a town council desperate to find a doctor to keep open the small town's clinic. Sarah's hopes are raised when widower Michael (Robert Hays), a surgeon, returns to visit during the Christmas holidays. But will her attempt to recruit Michael be complicated by their previous high school romance?

Book Synopsis Staging the Spanish Golden Age by : Kathleen Jeffs
Download or read book Staging the Spanish Golden Age written by Kathleen Jeffs and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, Kathleen Jeffs draws on first-hand experience of the Royal Shakespeare Company's rehearsal room for the 2004-05 Spanish Golden Age season to put forth a collaborative model for translating, rehearsing, and performing Spanish Golden Age drama. Building on the RSC season, the volume offers methodologies for translation and communication that can feed the creative processes of actors and directors, while maintaining an ethos of fidelity with regards to the original texts. It argues that collaboration between academics and theatre practitioners was instrumental in the success of the season and that the work carried out has repercussions for critical debate of Comedia. The volume posits a model for future productions of the Comedia in English, one that recognizes the need for the languages of the scholar and the theatre artist to be made mutually intelligible by the use of collaborative strategies, mediated by a consultant or dramaturg proficient in both tongues. This model applies more generally to theatrical collaborations involving a translator, writer and director, and will be useful for translation and performance processes in any language.
