Even if it is your mother tongue, you still need time and effort to master it because almost every language has its own slang and colloquial expressions, and the English language is no exception. Language is forever changing. What is currently acceptable or popular may be replaced by something else in years to come, and the use of slang is a strong testament to that. Slang is just an alternative way of saying something. It is sometimes hard to identify what is slang and what is not. Slang and colloquial expressions are often acceptable in informal writing because they are used in communication in movies, newspapers, radio, television, and other mass media The more you learn, the more you will know when to use or not to use them in your formal writing. No matter what, knowing these common everyday expressions is a plus for all ESL learners.

The #1 guide to American slang is now bigger, more up-to-date, and easier to use This new edition of McGraw-Hill’s Dictionary of American Slang and Colloquial Expressions offers complete definitions of more than 12,000 slang and informal expressions from various sources, ranging from golden oldies such as . . . golden oldie, to recent coinages like shizzle (gangsta), jonx (Wall Street), and ping (the Internet). Each entry is followed by examples illustrating how an expression is used in everyday conversation and, where necessary, International Phonetic Alphabet pronunciations are given, as well as cautionary notes for crude, inflammatory, or taboo expressions. This edition also features a fascinating introduction on “What is Slang?,” a Thematic Index that cross-references expressions by standard terms--such as Angry, Drunk, Food, Good-bye, Mess-up, Money, and Stupidity--and a Hidden Word Index that lets you identify and locate even partially remembered expressions and phrases.

This book was released on 2017-06-07 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepositions are words that indicate the relationships between various elements within a sentence. In formal English, prepositions are almost always followed by objects. e.g. The policeman shot (verb) the man (object) with (preposition identifying the man being shot) a knife. e.g. I put (verb) the pen (direct object) on (preposition indicating the position of the pen) the table (indirect object). e.g. I put (verb) the pen (direct object) under (preposition indicating the position of the pen) the table (indirect object). Prepositional phrases always consist of the object and the preposition. Prepositional phrases can act as adjectives or adverbs. When they are used as adjectives, they modify nouns and pronouns in the same way single-word adjectives do. When prepositional phrases are used as adverbs, they also act in the same way single-word adverbs and adverb clauses do, modifying adjectives, verbs, and other adverbs. Prepositional words and phrases are difficult, especially for ESL learners, because different prepositions may impart different meanings to the prepositional words and phrases. Even the same preposition may have different meanings to the same verb. Break in: enter without permission; interrupt; train; get used to something new. e.g. A burglar attempted to break in last night but without success. e.g. Don't break in while someone is talking; it's rude! e.g. The manager has to break the new employees in so that they may know what to do. e.g. You should break your new car in before you drive on the highway. This book has hundreds of prepositional words and phrases with explanations and examples, just like the ones illustrated above, for you reference. Improve your English with your mastery of prepositional words and phrases.

Smith, is designed to help English as a Second Language (ESL) learners understand and use practical idiom and slang expressions, fundamental aspects of the English language. This publication is filled with activities and practices designed to increase ESL students’ ability to incorporate these important components of American English into their own daily speech and/or writing behaviors. According to the author of "American Idiom and Slang for ESL Learners", idiom and slang are often believed to have the same meanings; however, there are important differences between these two language forms. Many dictionaries list slang terms as nouns or verbs. On the other hand, idioms are often described as nouns. Another distinction relates to the origins of both terms. Some sources indicate that idioms originated during the late 16th century, whereas slang usage began in the in mid-18th century. ”American Idiom and Slang for ESL Learners" provides important insight into the nuances of formal and informal English. Readers are given ample practice with popular idioms, such as, “Let’s hang out” (socialize or wait) and preposition combinations, including “ by the skin of one's teeth” (just barely). These expressions are simplified for for ESL users - making them easy to use in everyday speech.

It is the writer's effective use of words and phrases that makes sentences effective or ineffective. The English language is made up of nearly a million words and phrases. A writer, especially one whose English is not his or her first language, may face two major problems in writing: not knowing "enough" words; and not knowing how to choose the "right" words. Writing is made up of words. Effective writing requires having a good stock of vocabulary, as well as selecting the most suitable words and phrases to express the intended ideas. There are many English words and phrases that are frequently confused and misused by ESL learners. This book provides hundreds of those words and phrases with examples to show how they should be used correctly.
