This book was released on 1996 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes standards for the English language arts and defines what K-12 students should know about language and be able to do with language. The book presents the current consensus among literacy teachers and researchers about what students should learn in the English language arts--reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing, and visually representing. The first chapter of the book (Setting Standards in the English Language Arts) addresses defining the standards and the need for standards. The second chapter (Perspectives Informing the English Language Arts Standards) discusses the content, purpose, development, and context of the standards. The third chapter presents the 12 standards in detail. The fourth chapter (Standards in the Classroom) presents elementary, middle-school, and high-school vignettes which illustrate how the standards might be implemented in the classroom. The book concludes that these standards represent not an end but a beginning--a starting point for discussion and action. A glossary (containing more than 100 terms), a list of participants, a history of the standards project, an overview of standards projects, state and international English language arts standards, a 115-item annotated list of resources for teachers, and a comment form are attached. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the increasingly global implications of conversations about writing and learning, U.S. composition studies has devoted little attention to cross-national perspectives on student writing and its roles in wider cultural contexts. Caught up in our own concerns about how U.S. students make the transition as writers from secondary school to postsecondary education, we often overlook the fact that students around the world are undergoing the same evolution. How do the students in China, England, France, Germany, Kenya, or South Africa--the educational systems represented in this collection--write their way into the communities of their chosen disciplines? How, for instance, do students whose mother tongue is not the language of instruction cope with the demands of academic and discipline-specific writing? And in what ways is U.S. students' development as academic writers similar to or different from that of students in other countries? With this collection, editors David Foster and David R. Russell broaden the discussion about the role of writing in various educational systems and cultures. Students' development as academic writers raises issues of student authorship and agency, as well as larger issues of educational access, institutional power relations, system goals, and students' roles in society. The contributors to this collection discuss selected writing purposes and forms characteristic of a specific national education system, describe students' agency as writers, and identify contextual factors--social, economic, linguistic, cultural--that shape institutional responses to writing development. In discussions that bookend these studies of different educational structures, the editors compare U.S. postsecondary writing practices and pedagogies with those in other national systems, and suggest new perspectives for cross-national study of learning/writing issues important to all educational systems. Given the worldwide increase in students entering higher education and the endless need for effective writing across disciplines and nations, the insights offered here and the call for further studies are especially welcome and timely.

Book excerpt: Data science is emerging as a field that is revolutionizing science and industries alike. Work across nearly all domains is becoming more data driven, affecting both the jobs that are available and the skills that are required. As more data and ways of analyzing them become available, more aspects of the economy, society, and daily life will become dependent on data. It is imperative that educators, administrators, and students begin today to consider how to best prepare for and keep pace with this data-driven era of tomorrow. Undergraduate teaching, in particular, offers a critical link in offering more data science exposure to students and expanding the supply of data science talent. Data Science for Undergraduates: Opportunities and Options offers a vision for the emerging discipline of data science at the undergraduate level. This report outlines some considerations and approaches for academic institutions and others in the broader data science communities to help guide the ongoing transformation of this field.

It is fundamental for participation in democratic societies, and for social inclusion and cohesion. This handbook is a policy and working document which promotes convergence and coherence between the linguistic dimensions of various school subjects. It proposes measures to make explicit – in curricula, pedagogic material and teacher training – the specific linguistic norms and competences which learners must master in each school subject. It also presents the learning modalities that should allow all learners, and in particular the most vulnerable among them, to benefit from diversified language-learning situations in order to develop their cognitive and linguistic capacities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text, the second in a two-volume set examining the process of educational reform, describes case studies on the change process of education, as it impacts on the individual at work.; The authors provide interesting comparisons of similar changes occuring within education in different national settings, including Australia, New Zealand, Israel, the USA and the UK. The case studies are based on three themes: systematic change; the transition from policy to practice; and curriculum contexts. The effects of governmental control over the curriculum and attempts to reform education by legislation are explained and the similarities are seen as marginalisation of professional educators, corporatisation of education systems, instrumentalisation of curriculum and the inability of those in power to draw from past knowledge on educational change.; Written to stand alone, this book can also be read in conjunction with volume 1, "International Perspectives on Educational Reform and Policy Implementation", which examines the historical, social and economic influences on education policy reform. The authors argue that change takes a predictable format and, once understood, can be directed and managed. The books are intended to be of interest to all involved in the planning and implementation of change, together pointing the way to effective management of such change processes.

Originally composed in Sanskrit sometime between 400 BC and 400 AD, The Mahabharata--with one hundred thousand stanzas of verse--is one of the longest poems in existence. At the heart of the saga is a conflict between two branches of a royal family whose feud culminates in a titanic eighteen-day battle. Exploring such timeless subjects as dharma (duty), artha (purpose), and kama (pleasure) in a mythic world of warfare, magic, and beauty, this is a magnificent and legendary Hindu text of immense importance to the culture of the Indian subcontinent."--Publisher's description.
