Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Painters This brief sketch of the rise and progress of Painting in Eng land has been drawn from a variety of sources. The little that can be traced of artistic work previous to the end of the fifteenth century does not fill many pages. Ignorance, carelessness, and iconoclastic rage all contributed to the defacement of paintings which we have every reason to believe at one time abounded in our churches and public buildings, as they did at the same period in Italy; and there is good evidence that some of our early English artists are not to be despised. Our forefathers were too much engaged in the rough contests of war to care much for the arts of peace. In the sixteenth century several foreign artists of more or less celebrity were induced to visit and stay in England. Foremost of these was Holbein, and to his example English artists are deeply indebted. In the next century there were a few excellent miniature pain ters, whose work is not to be surpassed at the present day, and then came a succession of foreigners - Rubens and Van Dyck from Flanders, Lely and Kneller from Germany, and a hostviii preface. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lives of the Most Eminent British Painters, Vol. 1 Besides this work of editing, it was deemed desirable, for the further utility of a standard work, that it should be continued down to the present day. I have therefore prepared short biographies of some of the most eminent British artists who have died since Cunningham's time. Want of space has compelled the omission of many names that otherwise might well claim a place, especially those of our great water-colour painters, who have, without doubt, risen to high eminence. Possibly their lives may be added at some future time, but for the present I have been obliged to confine my work exclusively to painters in oil, selecting among these such as are best known to fame, or who seemed most noteworthy. Continuations are gene rally dull affairs, and I cannot pretend that my Lives are written in the same lively vein as Cunningham's: still I hope they will not be found without value and interest. And as our interest in any work is always greater if we know something of the author, I have also added a short account of Allan Cunningham himself - the sturdy Scotch stonemason, who by his own unaided exertions achieved both independence and fame, and who has written one of the best works of biography in the English language. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A, Century of Painters of the English School IN publishing a Second Edition of this work it has been judged advisable to abridge it considerably and to issue it in a single volume for the convenience of Art Students who may use it as a book of reference. The parts omitted have been mostly those dealing with the foundation of the Academy, and the descriptions of pictures, which latter were considered a little too technical for the general reader. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Painting From the Seventh Century to the Present Day This is the first book on English Painting that deals with the whole period from the seventh century to the present day. Something of the relation of English to Continental Art has also been indicated. I have studied at first hand the great majority of the paintings that I have described; and in judging of them my conclusions are my own. In covering so wide a field within the limits of a single volume, it was impossible to describe the work of all painters of merit. I have therefore selected for descrip tion whatever interested me most, at the same time aim ing at keeping clear the general developments in each period. Landscape, England's greatest contribution to painting, has been given more space than portraiture. Imaginative figure-composition, though it ceased for a long period to exist in England, is one of the oldest as it is one of the newest of English pictorial arts. It has brought forth our most varied powers 0 of invention; and the illus trations here are a reminder that Hogarth and Blake, Stevens and holman-hunt, and even Lamb and Spencer are of the same race as the great mediaeval illuminators and wall-painters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lives of the Most Eminent British Painters and Sculptors, Vol. 5 of 5 MY undertaking is now concluded, and I have the agreeable duty of thanking my friends for their aid, the public for its kindness, and critics for much mildness and forbearance. I at first imagined that three volumes, or at most four, would hold all I had to say but as the work ad vanced, new sources of intelligence were Opened. What was intended for a sketch took a more im portant form, and I soon perceived that I required more room, and greater fulness, both of narration and remark. The deaths, too, of such men as Lawrence and Jackson obliged me to extend my plan nor am I sure that I have yet admitted all artists of merit and genius into my volumes. In tracing the lives and delineating the charac ters of the chief men of our native school of art, I have endeavoured to be scrupulously impartial it was my wish to speak warmly of merits and can didly of faults, and in no way to sacrifice my own opinion in matters either of taste or conduct. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Century of Painters of the English School, Vol. 1 of 2: With Critical Notices of Their Works, and an Account of the Progress of Art in England The opinion is at last gaining ground that Art is no longer an alien on English soil; and the time appears to have arrived when some interest will be felt in a narrative of its progress among us. An artist may now without fear of presumption speak of The English School, a school rich in fine works, whose painters are remarkable for the national character, as well as for the individual originality, of their genius. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the British School of Painting My aim in compiling a short History of the British School of Painting is to supply an apparent want in the Art Literature of the day. All our recent valuable d104 Books and Essays upon Art pre-suppose more accurate information respecting the names, characteristics and principal works of the painters of the British School than is to be found in a concise form, within the reach of every art student. Although fully conscious that I have rather collected the materials for a history than deftly welded them into one, I trust that my foundation of facts will be solid enough to enable some future historian to construct upon it a more graceful edifice. If, in the meantime, my labours prove of service in bridging over the gap, I shall feel amply repaid. I regret the accidental omission of the names of several excellent artists. This and other short comings I hope to remedy should a second edition be called for. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Would that a comparable lucidity and comprehension persisted throughout this short history But I am conscious that in its account of British Painting from Tudor times till 1900 this book will not answer many questions that might be put to it.
