Book Synopsis Reformation Hermeneutics and Literary Language in Early Modern England by : Jamie H. Ferguson
Download or read book Reformation Hermeneutics and Literary Language in Early Modern England written by Jamie H. Ferguson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-03-28 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The expressive and literary capacities of post-Reformation English were largely shaped in response to the Bible. Faith in the Language examines the convergence of biblical interpretation and English literature, from William Tyndale to John Donne, and argues that the groundwork for a newly authoritative literary tradition in early modern England is laid in the discourse of biblical hermeneutics. The period 1525-1611 witnessed a proliferation of English biblical versions, provoking a century-long debate about how and whether the Bible should be rendered in English. These public, indeed institutional accounts of biblical English changed the language: questions about the relation between Scripture and exegetical tradition that shaped post-Reformation hermeneutics bore strange fruit in secular literature that defined itself through varying forms of autonomy vis-a-vis prior tradition.

Download or read book The Twelve Tables written by Anonymous and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2019-12-05 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the legislation that formed the basis of Roman law - The Laws of the Twelve Tables. These laws, formally promulgated in 449 BC, consolidated earlier traditions and established enduring rights and duties of Roman citizens. The Tables were created in response to agitation by the plebeian class, who had previously been excluded from the higher benefits of the Republic. Despite previously being unwritten and exclusively interpreted by upper-class priests, the Tables became highly regarded and formed the basis of Roman law for a thousand years. This comprehensive sequence of definitions of private rights and procedures, although highly specific and diverse, provided a foundation for the enduring legal system of the Roman Empire.

Book Synopsis An Historical Syntax of the English Language by : Museo Di Roma
Download or read book An Historical Syntax of the English Language written by Museo Di Roma and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-05-08 with total page 729 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frederik Theodor Visser's An Historical Syntax of the English Language, published in four massive volumes between 1963 and 1973, is certainly one of the cornerstones of research in English linguistics. Visser's achievements can hardly be overestimated. Before the advent of modern corpus linguistics, he compiled a remarkable wealth of detailed philological data from all periods of English and combined this with current grammatical analyses of his time. This has made this publications an indispensable resource for anyone investigating the history of English syntax. This reproduction of Visser's volumes is more than welcome, and timely, as the volumes have been out of print for quite some time and were sometimes a little bit difficult to navigate. Having a searchable and easy-to-use online version, although maybe not perfect, available now means a revival for scholarship that celebrates its fiftieth birthday without losing any of its relevance.

Book Synopsis What Graeco-Roman Grammar Was About by : P. H. Matthews
Download or read book What Graeco-Roman Grammar Was About written by P. H. Matthews and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-05 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains how the grammarians of the Graeco-Romance world perceived the nature and structure of the languages they taught. The volume focuses primarily on the early centuries AD, a time when the Roman Empire was at its peak; in this period, a grammarian not only had a secure place in the ancient system of education, but could take for granted an established technical understanding of language. By delineating what that ancient model of grammar was, P. H. Matthews highlights both those aspects that have persisted to this day and seem reassuringly familiar, such as 'parts of speech', as well as those aspects that are wholly dissimilar to our present understanding of grammar and language. The volume is written to be accessible to students of linguistics from undergraduate level upwards, and assumes no knowledge of Latin or Ancient Greek.
