Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Odes His tangled strophes and antistrophes. In the living lan guages, Italian was already well provided with stately lyrical forms of verse, the heritage to her of the Middle Ages, and it was in French that the first modern odes were written. In I 550 Ronsard published his original collection, with a quaint essay, in which he distinctly pointed to Pindar and the Greeks as the source of his inspiration. His odes, indeed, are singularly correct, and even monotonous, in form; strophe, antistrophe and epode following in due order, without attention to what is almost as important, the variation of the length of different lines in each stanza. Having justified, however, by fifteen of these regular pieces, his determination to ishow le moyen de suivre Pindare, he lapsed into in dolence for the rest of his life, and wrote reams of poems that were only odes by critical courtesy. His laxity, not his learning, was imitated by various lyrists of the French decadence down to J. J. Rousseau and Escouchard Lebrun. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Odes of Horace: In English, in the Original Metres He is sensible how far any English Version, or indeed one in any other language, falls short of the inimitable graces of the Original, but he has tried to do his best. To two classes of Readers he may perhaps commend his book. The Scholar may possibly find amusement in perusing his old friend's style imitated in English while the English reader may feel an interest in reading the famous Latin Poet in a Version which attempts to shew him not only 201m! Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Odes of Horace: Translated Into English The Translations of the Horatian Odes already known to the public are numerous; and their stand ard is not mean; so that the question may fairly be put, Why add to the number? And that question is entitled to receive an answer. My answer for the present is as follows. There is, in my view, one special necessity of translation from Horace, which has, so far as I know, hereto fore received in many quarters what seems to me a very inadequate share of attention; that is to say, the necessity of compression. So far as I am aware, Milton in earlier days, and Conington in our own, are conspicuous exceptions, but are almost the only exceptions, to this observation. And without com pression, in my opinion, a translation from Horace, whatever its other merits may be, ceases to be Horatian: ceases, that is, to represent the original. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Odes of Horace, Vol. 2: Translated Into English Verse The present translation is an endeavour to carry out the aims of the former, namely, to give a rendering, in the simplest metre, of the meaning of the poet, without any attempt at a literal translation, and without being in any way bound to use the same metre in translating similar Odes. The original Latin is also pre fixed, not to show the exactness of the trans lation, since it is not exact, but as an assistance to those of my readers who, like myself, have long left their schooldays behind them, but who may still retain a not altogether unkindly re collection of their classical studies. The editions followed have been mentioned in every case. I have scrupulously retained the punctuation of these original edi tions, and only modernized the spelling of the old copies; while I have not ventured to omit any part Of any poem. I have not supplied titles of my own, but have adopted those I found already employed in the editions used as models, or, in some of the cases in which I found none, have merely added a descriptive one, such as Song from 'don Juan.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Poems: Old English and Middle English Periods, 450-1550 This volume is the first in order, although the last to appear, in a series of four volumes of English Poems, in tended especially for use with college classes. The aim and method of the series as a whole have been set forth in the prefaces to the other volumes and need not be repeated here, the less because the present volume differs considerably from the rest. It cannot well be used separately, as the later volumes can, but derives its chief value from its connection with the series: for the thorough study of Old English and Middle English poetry it is quite inadequate, but in an introductory survey course in English literature it may serve a useful end. To increase the value of the book for this purpose, some specimens of the early drama are given. Although plays are elsewhere excluded from the series and some of those here included exceed the strict chrono logical limits of the period. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early English Poems: Selected and Edited This change of attitude, which might be illustrated by many similar examples, is assuredly a sign of progress. It is no depreciation of the labor of the scholar, but rather an evidence of its value. It is plain that the researches of the specialist in these fields, minute and contracted as they may have some times seemed, have had a wider influence, a more general significance, than might at first have been supposed. It is plain that these intensive students of the life, language, and literature of early England may be justly compared to those adventurers who press on in the van of immigration, and so open up to civilization regions hitherto inaccessible, or but sparsely settled. In this work of reclamation the translator as well as the pioneer scholar has his place and office. It is better, of course, to read this early literature in the language in which it was written, than to read it in translation, but it is better to read it in a translation, or in a modernized form, than not to read it at all. We may regret that Keats could not read the Iliad in Greek, and we may be thankful at the same time that he did read it in English. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Select Odes of Horace in English Lyrics: A Specimen of a New Translation of the Poet The object of the following work is to present to the English reader Translations of some choice Odes of the Roman Poet, in a form combining an almost literal fidelity of rendering, with the spirit of the original - in as far as the writer may have been successful in embodying it. He has long considered that much has been left hitherto to be accomplished on both these points; and without wishing to detract from the merits of former Translators, or to challenge very especially their competition, he wishes simply to place the present work before the reader, that if approved, it may lead to a more extended re-translation of the Poet, and his appearance in a more native hue beforc the public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Songs, and Other Small Poems "Barry Cornwall, with the exception of Coleridge, is the most genuine poet of love, who has, for a long period, appeared among us. There is an intense and passionate beauty, a depth of affection, in his little dramatic poems, which appear even in the affectionate triflings of his gentle characters. He illustrates that holiest of human emotions, which, while it will twine itself with the frailest twig, or dally with the most evanescent shadow of creation, wasting its excess of kindliness on all around it, is yet able to 'look on tempests and be never shaken.' Love is gently omnipotent in his poems; accident and death itself are but passing clouds, which scarcely vex and which cannot harm it. The lover seems to breathe out his life in the arms of his mistress, as calmly as the infant sinks into its softest slumber. The fair blossoms of his genius, though light and trembling at the breeze, spring from a wide, and deep, and robust stock, which will sustain far taller branches without being exhausted."
