Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of the Life of William Shakespeare: With an Essay Toward the Expression of His Genius, and an Account of the Rise and Progress of the English Drama Collier's later work upon those subjects, by its ful ness and its systematic arrangement, supersedes all others, either for the use of the dramatic stu dent, or as a book of reference for the occasional inquirer. Yet the account of the English drama given in the following pages will be found to be something more, as well as something less, than an abridgment of Mr. Collier's three octavo vol nmes. These remarks apply only to the first and last divisions of this volume. The second, the Essay toward an Expression of Shakespeare's Genius, is the endeavor of one who, having read the poet much and his critics little, has thought his own thoughts and trusted his own judgment upon this subject, until, with a mingling of confidence and difi'idence which it would be difficult to explain, he now ventures to offer his conclusions as hints and aids to others; conscious the while that those who can judge them best are those who need them least. Book excerpt: Excerpt from William Shakespeare: A Literary Biography Is herewith offered to the English public, was published in Germany as early as 1876, and has there passed through several editions. The edition from which the present translation has been made has been specially revised and improved by the author for the English version. Dr. Elze's work has won the reputation in Germany of giving the fullest informa tion on everything that is known in connection with Shake speare's life, his works, and his surroundings, together with a careful criticism of all the disputed points. It has been one of the author's endeavours to make his book a readable one in every way, and to retain his reader's atten tion from beginning to end by giving his information as far as possible in a consecutive narrative, without allowing this form in any way to affect the critical character to which his work may justly lay claim. English students of Shakespeare and his times cannot but be interested in seeing the results of Shakespearean study in Germany, and it is hoped that this volume from one of the leading German interpreters of Eng. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reading of Shakespeare Almost every English-speaking man with literary tastes has had, at some time in his life, a bout with Shakespeare, since this dramatist represents the highest object of his literary curiosity, and it may also be affirmed that one who possesses any virility of mind is made stronger by the study of Shakespeare; our strenuous chief magistrate, it is said, is fond of Shakespeare, and reads him for refreshment while stretched before the fire in his Montana log cabin. The subject itself of Shakespeare aids us in our reading by its very magnitude. Nature has produced three poets who stand like mountain peaks higher than the rest - Homer, Dante, and Shakespeare. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mr. William Shakespeare: Original and Early Editions of His Quartos and Folios, His Source Books and Those Containing Contemporary Notices The number of books relating to Shakespeare is so large already that it may seem, at first thought, unnecessary to add another. For three centuries he has been approached from every point of View, by every kind of mind, and no one can hope to read all that has been written about him. My best excuse for putting one more book about Shake speare before the public is that it contains, in one volume, full and accurate descriptions of the first editions of a great many books in early English literature connected with him, and gives their present location. It is, in fact, an attempt to bring to gether, in compact form, all the more important printed sources before 1640, from which we derive our knowledge of the greatest English dramatist, his life and works. In 1916, on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of Shake speare's death, an exhibition of books by and about him was held in the New York Public Library from April 2 to July 15, which was visited by over people. That exhibition was the basis on which the present work is founded. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's Macbeth for Use in Public and High Schools Shakespeare himself took no pains to preserve his plays in permanent form. In all only fifteen of his plays were printed during his lifetime. In 1623, however, seven years after his death, a complete collection of his plays, thirty-six in all, were published in what is known as The Folio of 1623. Note - A folio page is about the size of an ordinary page of foolscap (about formed by folding the printer's sheet of paper once. When the printer's sheet is divided into four parts, the size of page is known as quarto; when divided into eight parts it is octavo when divided into twelve parts it is duodecimo. The plays which were printed during Shakespeare's lifetime were published in quarto volumes, as distinguished from the later folios. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's Plays, Vol. 1 of 3: With His Life; Histories The inquiry will naturally suggest itself to most readers at all conversant with Shakespearian criticism, What can be the use of any more editorial labour upon Shakespeare, and especially by an American editor After the immense labours of a long succession of critics, most of them learned, industrious, and acute, -some of them among the greatest literary names of the last or the present century, - what can be contributed now and here, either to the purity of the Poet's text, or the illustration of his thoughts? In short, it may be asked, Why would not the wants of the American public be better supplied by a reprint of some one or other of the later and more perfect English editions, than by any attempt at a new one C? These, or similar inquiries, would have occurred to no one sooner than to the present editor himself, had he found his own task undertaken by another. The reply can be best given by stating the manner in which he was led to engage in a labour which he would never have undertaken, Voluntarily, from the first, though it has since proved to him one of those labours we delight in. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare and England There is nothing new and important to be said of Shakespeare. In recent years antiquaries have made some additions to our know ledge of the facts of his life. These additions are all tantalizing and comparatively insignificant. The history of the publication of his works has also become clearer and more intelligible, especially by the labours of Mr. Pollard; but the whole question of quartos and folios remains thorny and difficult, so that no one can reach any definite conclusion in this matter without a liberal use of conjecture. I propose to return to the old catholic doctrine which has been illuminated by so many disciples of Shakespeare, and to speak of him as our great national poet. He embodies and exemplifies all the virtues, and most of the faults, of England. Any one who reads and understands him understands England. This method of studying Shakespeare by reading him has perhaps gone somewhat out of vogue in favour of more roundabout ways of approach, but it is the best method for all that. Shakespeare tells us more about himself and his mind than we could learn even from those who knew him in his habit as he lived, if they were all alive and all talking. To learn what he tells we have only to listen. I think there is no national poet, of any great nation whatsoever, who is so completely representative of his own people as Shake speare is representative of the English. There is certainly no other English poet who comes near to Shakespeare in embodying our character and our foibles. No one, in this connexion, would venture even to mention Spenser or Milton. Chaucer is English, but he lived at a time when England was not yet completely English, so that he is only half-conscious of his nation. Wordsworth is English, but he was a recluse. Browning is English, but he lived apart or abroad, and was a tourist of genius. The most English of all our great men of letters, next to Shakespeare, is certainly Dr. Johnson. Book excerpt: The Tempest: A Comedy is a one of the many famous plays written by the well known English playwright, William Shakespeare. A poet, playwright, and actor, Shakespeare is widely considered to be one of, if not the greatest writer in the English language. Frequently referred to as England's national poet, Shakespeare crafted thirty eight plays, two long narrative poems, and one hundred and fifty four sonnets in his lifetime. All of his plays, including The Tempest, have been translated into every major language and are consistently performed more often than plays by any other writer in the history of literature. In this play, Shakespeare examines magical elements not often seen in his other works as he crafts a world and characters that manipulate one another via magical means. The play centers around a father and daughter on an island and the father's attempt to ensnare the King Alonso of Naples into a political upheaval and a marriage between their children. While considered a comedy, this play draws heavily on romantic writings and is influenced by the tradition of tragicomedies. Through its use of illusion, manipulation, and the words of characters, this play has consistent reminders that it is just a play, or rather just another illusion of life. This tactic is one of the reasons that this play stands out to those familiar with Shakespeare's work as an interesting interpretation of play writing and the purpose of plays in the theater. The Tempest: A Comedy is a wonderfully executed play by the incomparable playwright, William Shakespeare. This is a wonderful read for individuals interested in Shakespeare and his work along with individuals with a distinct interest in English plays and theater. This book is bound to be exciting for students of drama, teachers of drama and literature, and playwrights wanting to learn from the best playwright known to man. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare in the Eighteenth Century At no time since his death has Shakespeare not been placed upon a pinnacle by himself as the greatest of all English writers. But each age has its own point of View, its own special interests, its characteristic method of treatment; and no age can ever say the last word on anything that is a living and life-giving force. Say the last word on Shakespeare, and Shakespeare is dead. There can never be finality in the criticism of a great author. The truth and the beauty embodied in his work exercise the taste and the acumen of one critic, and remain undiminished and untarnished for the next. All the best criticism of the present day.
