Book Synopsis Robert Louis Stevenson in the Pacific by : Roslyn Jolly
Download or read book Robert Louis Stevenson in the Pacific written by Roslyn Jolly and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Louis Stevenson's departure from Europe in 1887 coincided with a vocational crisis prompted by his father's death. Impatient with his established identity as a writer, Stevenson was eager to explore different ways of writing, at the same time that living in the Pacific stimulated a range of latent intellectual and political interests. Roslyn Jolly examines the crucial period from 1887 to 1894, focusing on the self-transformation wrought in Stevenson's Pacific travel-writing and political texts. Jolly shows how Stevenson's desire to understand unfamiliar Polynesian and Micronesian cultures, and to record and intervene in the politics of Samoa, gave him opportunities to use his legal education, pursue his interest in historiography, and experiment with anthropology and journalism. Thus as his geographical and cultural horizons expanded, Stevenson's professional sphere enlarged as well, stretching the category of authorship in which his successes as a novelist had placed him. Rather than enhancing his stature as a popular writer, however, Stevenson's experiments with new styles and genres, and the Pacific subject matter of his later works, were resisted by his readers. Jolly's analysis of contemporary responses to Stevenson's writing, gleaned from an extensive collection of reviews, many of which are not readily available, provides fascinating insights into the interests, obsessions, and resistances of Victorian readers. As Stevenson sought to escape the vocational straightjacket that confined him, his readers just as strenuously expressed their loyalty to outmoded images of Stevenson the author, and their distrust of the new guises in which he presented himself.
Book Synopsis Novel Environments by : Jayne Hildebrand
Download or read book Novel Environments written by Jayne Hildebrand and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-06-30 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The environment concept has shaped humanity's relationship to the natural world and has drawn attention to the effects of human actions on our natural surroundings. But when did we learn that we live in an environment? While scholars have often located the emergence of the environment concept in twentieth-century ecological and political thought, Novel Environments: Science, Description, and Victorian Fiction reconstructs a longer--and a specifically literary--history. It was in the descriptive worldmaking of the Victorian novel that the environment was first transformed from an abstraction into a vivid object of imagination and feeling. Engaging the scientific theories of their contemporaries, Mary Russell Mitford, George Eliot, Thomas Hardy, and Robert Louis Stevenson turned to detailed description--from gardens and landscapes to weather and atmospheres--to model interactions between life and its surroundings. Far from merely furnishing static background, the descriptive apparatus of the Victorian novel imagined the nonhuman environment as dynamically involved with human action, feeling, and development. In making this argument, Novel Environments recovers the scientific vocabulary the Victorians used to name the surroundings of living organisms. The word "environment" dominates our own way of speaking about the nonhuman world, but nineteenth-century scientific writers and novelists availed themselves of a richer conceptual lexicon, which included "environment" along with less familiar concepts such as "milieu," "medium," and "circumstance". Jayne Hildebrand's story begins at the earliest theorization of environmental forces as a dynamic influence in the life sciences, moves through the apotheosis of the idea of a singular "medium" in mid-century organicist philosophy, and ends at the conception of the planet as an environmental system at the fin-de-siècle. By showing how novelistic description helped to elaborate the environment concept over the nineteenth century, Hildebrand sheds new light on the relationship between Victorian literature and the life sciences, and reveals how literary form has shaped the ecological concepts through which we apprehend the nonhuman world.

Book Synopsis Cruising with Robert Louis Stevenson by : Oliver S. Buckton
Download or read book Cruising with Robert Louis Stevenson written by Oliver S. Buckton and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cruising with Robert Louis Stevenson: Travel, Narrative, and the Colonial Body is the first booklengthstudy about the influence of travel on RobertLouis Stevenson's writings, both fiction and nonfiction.Within the contexts of late-Victorian imperialism andethnographic discourse, the book offers original closereadings of individual works by Stevenson while bringingnew theoretical insights to bear on the relationshipbetween travel, authorship, and gender identity in theVictorian fin de siècle. Oliver S. Buckton develops "cruising" as a criticalterm, linking Stevenson's leisurely mode of travelwith the striking narrative motifs of disruption andfragmentation that characterize his writings. Bucktontraces the development of Stevenson's career from hisearly travel books to show how Stevenson's majorworks of fiction, such as Treasure Island, Kidnapped, andThe Ebb-Tide, draw on innovative techniques and materialsStevenson acquired in the course of his globaltravels. Exploring Stevenson's pivotal role in the revivalof "romance" in the late nineteenth century, Cruisingwith Robert Louis Stevenson highlights Stevenson's treatmentof the human body as part of his resistance torealism, arguing that the energies and desires releasedby travel are often routed through disturbingly resistantor darkly comic corporeal figures. Buckton gives extensiveattention to Stevenson's writing about the SouthSeas, arguing that his groundbreaking critiques ofEuropean colonialism are formed in awareness of thefragility and desirability of Polynesian bodies and islandlandscapes. Cruising with Robert Louis Stevenson will be indispensableto all admirers of Stevenson as well as of greatinterest to readers of travel writing, Victorian ethnography, gender studies, and literary criticism.

Book Synopsis Reading Texts, Reading Lives by : Daniel Morris
Download or read book Reading Texts, Reading Lives written by Daniel Morris and published by University of Delaware. This book was released on 2012-06-14 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our culture attempts to separate competing ideological factions by denying relationships between multiple perspectives and influences outside of one’s own narrow interpretive community. The distinguished essayists in this volume find Daniel R. Schwarz’s pluralistic, self-questioning approach to what he calls “reading texts and reading lives” quite relevant to the current historical moment and political situation. A legendary scholar of modernist literature, Schwarz’s critical principles are a healthy corrective to cultural hubris. The essayists treat works ranging from fictions by Joyce, Conrad, Morrison, and Woolf to the poetry of Yeats, to Holocaust literature, to the environmental writings of Wendell Berry, to the photographs of Lee Friedlander. The authors focus on different works, but they follow Schwarz in stressing formal elements most often associated with traditional realism while keeping an eye on historical and author-centered approaches. The essayists also follow Schwarz in their emphasis on narrative cohesion and in how they look for signs of agency among characters who possess the will to alter their fate, even in a seemingly random universe such as the one depicted by Conrad. Readers with eyes to ethics and aesthetics, they follow Schwarz in encouraging a values-centered approach that leaves room for the reader to address the ways in which reading a text correlates to the reader’s ability to find meaning and value in experience outside the text. Like Schwarz, the essays look for intentionality of authorial meaning (rather than something called an “author function”) as well as for the relationship between lived experience and the imagined world of the literary work (rather than the endless semiotic play of an ultimately indecipherable text).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical interest in Robert Louis Stevenson has never been greater. New editions of the author's works--from the poems to the travel writing, from the Scottish novels to the South Seas tales--are appearing. During the year 2000, the sesquicentennial of RLS's birth, three conferences were held in honor of the occasion and each entertained an international audience. This collection of essays reflects the scope of Robert Louis Stevenson's achievement and the range of current critical response. The first section contains four critical overviews that include an analysis of the Stevensonian imagination, an assessment of the author's literary theory, an examination of the coded significance of burial and reanimation in Stevenson's Wrong Box and other works, and an examination of the use of both Scottish and South Seas islands in his fiction. The second section contains three essays that examine the many-faceted Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Other works--An Inland Voyage, A Child's Garden of Verses, The Dynamiter, The Master of Ballantrae, and Prayers Written at Vailima--are the subjects of the six essays in the third section. Three essays on biography, popular culture, and personal response are in the fourth section.
