Book excerpt: Volume 9 takes up the questions -- national, sociolinguistic, strategic, economic and educational -- which arise in relation to the increasing use of English alongside national or vernacular languages, focusing on its use as the language of instruction in Danish Universities. Inevitably, this also makes globalisation a theme of this issue. The dilemmas of the universities, however, have a special character within this wider issue, partly because they are in the frontline of globalisation processes, and partly because they are regarded as having new and enhanced social significance in the post-industrial society. In addition to the academic articles in this issue there is a series of 'position statements' written by some of the major participants in the Danish debate on language policy in the universities. They were invited to state in about 500 words their essential views on the theme. Their contributions give some of the flavour of the argument that has been going on with increasing intensity in Denmark for the past ten years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Denmark's business culture is known for its "flat hierarchy". This means fewer layers of people to keep an eye on you, which can be refreshing, but it means there are also fewer people around to help if you’re confused or overwhelmed. "How to Work in Denmark" is a guide to working in Denmark for newcomers to the country and recent graduates of Danish universities. It reveals how to write your CV to apply for a job in Denmark, how to prepare for a Danish job interview, and which job benefits you can expect from a Danish company. The book includes tips on Danish business etiquette, such as how to handle a meeting, what to wear to work, and how to handle business gifts in Denmark. You'll also learn how to socialize with your Danish colleagues, how to make sure your spouse gets settled in properly in Denmark and (if you don't have a spouse) whether or not it's a good idea to date one of your co-workers in Denmark. In addition, the book explains what a Danish boss expects from an employee and how to advance your career in Denmark. There are positive aspects to working in Denmark and negative aspects to working in Denmark. This book looks at both sides of Denmark's working culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1815, Denmark and Britain have lived in peace with each other. From the last half of the 19th century, massive British imports of Danish agricultural products gave Britain a central role in the Danish economy, likewise in the 20th century, British efforts in the two world wars became of crucial importance to Denmark's position in relation to Germany and, later, the Soviet Union. In the same period, the emergence of English as the first foreign language in Denmark facilitated the increasingly closer human and cultural contacts between the two countries. Britain and Denmark, written by Danish and British historians, constitutes the first attempt to provide a comprehensive picture of the roles that these two neighbouring countries have played in the lives of each other during the last two centuries. They are different in size and have had very different global and regional orientations. So, naturally, Britain has always loomed larger in Danish life and politics than the other way round. In many areas, however, relations have been close. The book covers contacts relating to trade, security policies and social and political theory, but also touch on mutual influences within the areas of literature, music, design etc. Most treatments of Danish political and cultural relations with the outside world in this period concentrate on Germany for the period up to 1945, and on the Soviet Union and the USA in the post-war world. In the same way, works on British contemporary history rarely devote much space to relations with the Nordic countries. The aim, therefore, of this book is to provide a supplement, and perhaps corrective, to the existing literature on the international positions of Britain and Denmark in the modern world.

Book excerpt: Part reportage, part travelogue, this is a fascinating introduction to contemporary Danish culture for anyone who wants to know more about the world's happiest nation. Denmark is the country of the moment. Recently named the happiest nation in the world, it's the home of The Killing and Noma, the world's best (and most eccentric) restaurant. We wear their sweaters, watch their thrillers, and covet their cool modern design, but how much do we really know about the Danes themselves? Part reportage, part travelogue, How to Be Danish fills in the gaps--an introduction to contemporary Danish culture that spans politics, television, food, architecture, and design.
