Book excerpt: Educating dual language learners (DLLs) and English learners (ELs) effectively is a national challenge with consequences both for individuals and for American society. Despite their linguistic, cognitive, and social potential, many ELsâ€"who account for more than 9 percent of enrollment in grades K-12 in U.S. schoolsâ€"are struggling to meet the requirements for academic success, and their prospects for success in postsecondary education and in the workforce are jeopardized as a result. Promoting the Educational Success of Children and Youth Learning English: Promising Futures examines how evidence based on research relevant to the development of DLLs/ELs from birth to age 21 can inform education and health policies and related practices that can result in better educational outcomes. This report makes recommendations for policy, practice, and research and data collection focused on addressing the challenges in caring for and educating DLLs/ELs from birth to grade 12.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many years passed since the idea to write a book teaching English to kids and parents came to my mind and now I want to share it with you. I started my career as a teacher at school, teaching English to children in a secondary school and found out, that it was too late to start teaching a foreign language to the kids of age 11-12 years old. The linguistic ability to grasp languages at this age was declining and we, as teachers, were simply wasting our efforts: it was hard for the children to master a new language and it was hard for the teacher to make them learn it.The learning process became painful and in most cases unsuccessful. The natural way out of this precarious situation was to start teaching English as early as possible, when kids can start learning with no effort, when new words are remembered in no time and speech in a foreign language comes as easy as the mother language. So I started experimenting with the kid's age at which learning a foreign language can be done most easy and in a favorable way. My approach was different from just developing the bilingual kids. When developing a bilingual child one should speak with a child in both languages. Usually two parents can do this effortlessly by speaking with a child in two languages simultaneously and then a child can speak both languages. But who in my country at this time, the former USSR, could speak English at home to a child?

Book excerpt: `A definite must-have for all teachers of English confronted with early multilingualism' - Times Educational Supplement The activities and guidance in this book will help teachers to develop the confidence and meet the individual needs of young children with English as an additional language across different settings. There are also practical and varied language teaching strategies to promote learning for children working individually or in small groups. The first part of the book focuses on the introduction and development of oral language skills and the particular needs of young "additional English language learners" settling into a new environment. It provides an introduction to the Foundation Stage curriculum and the ways in which links can be made with English as an additional language activity. The second part of the book presents practical activities grouped under the six areas of learning forming the early years curriculum. Each activity includes an appropriate objective, materials and preparation, key vocabulary to focus on and extension suggestions, as well as full guidance on how to manage the activity effectively. The book will be a valuable resource for all teachers, teaching assistants and other early years staff in day nurseries, nursery schools and other early years settings. Kay Crosse is a freelance early years consultant and was formerly head of Norland College.

Book excerpt: "This is the first full-length study of South African English youth literature to cover the entire period of its publication, from the late nineteenth century to the early twenty-first century. What gives this book particular strength is its coverage of literature up to the 1960s, which has until now recieved almost no scholarly attention. Not only is this earlier literature a rewarding subject for study in itself, but it also throws light on subsequent literary developments. Jenkins also makes comparisons with American, Canadian and Australian children's literature. This book is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand children's literature in the context of adult South African literature and South African cultural history."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the trials of families experiencing divorce, as in Anne Fine’s Madame Doubtfire, to the childcare problems highlighted in Jacqueline Wilson’s Tracy Beaker, it might seem that the traditional family and the ideals that accompany it have long vanished. However, in The Family in English Children’s Literature, Ann Alston argues that this is far from the case. She suggests that despite the tales of family woe portrayed in children’s literature, the desire for the happy, contented nuclear family remains inherent within the ideological subtexts of children’s literature. Using 1818 as a starting point, Alston investigates families in children’s literature at their most intimate, focusing on how they share their spaces, their ideals of home, and even on what they eat for dinner. What emerges from Alston’s study are not so much the contrasts that exist between periods, but rather the startling similarities of the ideology of family intrinsic to children’s literature. The Family in English Children’s Literature sheds light on who maintains control, who behaves, and how significant children’s literature is in shaping our ideas about what makes a family "good."
