Download or read book English Watercolors written by Graham Reynolds and published by New Amsterdam Books. This book was released on 1998-04-21 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English artists have made a unique contribution to the art of watercolor painting. In no other Western country has this very attractive medium been used so consistently, or for works of such stature, as in England between 1750 and the present day. In this general survey of the whole period, Graham Reynolds, formerly Keeper of Paintings and of Prints and Drawings at the Victoria & Albert Museum, discusses the paintings of over 100 artists including the well-known watercolorists such as Cozens, Girtin, Cotman and De Wint, as well as artists who are equally known for their work in other media - Gainsborough, Turner, Constable, Sargent, Henry Moore. The 140 illustrations, 64 in color, show the work of these and lesser-known artists and reveal the versatility of this medium, so the reader will be introduced to its use for illustrative caricature and portraiture as well as to the finest examples of traditional landscape watercolors.

Download or read book Perfect Likeness written by Cincinnati Art Museum and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diminutive marvels of artistry and fine craftsmanship, portrait miniatures reveal a wealth of information within their small frames. They can tell tales of cultural history and biography, of people and their passions, of evolving tastes in jewelry, fashion, hairstyles, and the decorative arts. Unlike many other genres, miniatures have a tradition in which amateurs and professionals have operated in parallel and women artists have flourished as professionals. This richly illustrated book presents approximately 180 portrait miniatures selected from the holdings of the Cincinnati Art Museum, the largest and most diverse collection of its kind in North America. The book stresses the continuity of stylistic tradition across Europe and America as well as the vitality of the portrait miniature format through more than four centuries. A detailed catalogue entry, as well as a concise artist biography, appears for each object. Essays examine various aspects of miniature painting, of the depiction of costume in miniatures, and of the allied art of hair work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vast Canadian landscape has captured the imagination of visual artists since the first European contact. Although artistic engagement with the landscape has a long history, some periods have drawn considerable critical attention, while others have been left almost unexamined. Picturing the Land surveys work from coast to coast, from the earliest maps to postwar painting in English and French Canada, To provide a comprehensive view of Canadian landscape art. Emphasizing the ways in which social, economic, and political conditions determine representation, Marylin McKay moves beyond canonical images and traditional nationalistic interpretations by analyzing Canadian landscape art in relation to different concepts of territory. Taking an expansive and inclusive perspective on Canadian landscape art, McKay depicts this tradition in all its diversity and draws it into the larger body of Western landscape art, broadening the horizon of future study, appreciation, and criticism. Richly illustrated and filled with sophisticated and innovative commentary, Picturing the Land provides new and distinct histories of the landscape art of French and English Canada.
Book Synopsis THE REEVES FAMILY - MANUFACTURERS OF SUPERFINE WATER-COLOR PAINT IN THE REGENCY PERIOD by : Jaap den Hollander (NL)
Download or read book THE REEVES FAMILY - MANUFACTURERS OF SUPERFINE WATER-COLOR PAINT IN THE REGENCY PERIOD written by Jaap den Hollander (NL) and published by Art Education. This book was released on 2023-05-05 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract This study describes an antique watercolor box from Reeves with 24 colors in cakes, dating around 1800. A second box from T. Reeves & Son dating between 1790-1799 is added and described. A concise chronological overview shows which family members of the Reeves’ family and their associates lead the firm during the Regency period. Old city maps of London indicate the various shop locations and a brief look is taken at early 18th century shops of color men and the production of watercolor paint in cakes. The dating of the watercolor box and its contents raise a number of questions. To position the box with contents in the correct period, an overview of available trade cards is consulted. Stamps on cakes are linked to the various family members, who led the Reeves firm in the Regency period.Based on the contents of comparable watercolor boxes relationships are established with user groups, quality criteria of the paint and color theories in the 17th and 18th century. An attempt has been made the 17th and 18th century color theories, in which light refraction, the distinguishing of colors and physical laws are important, to connect with pigments, tinctures, and mixing paint colors to make visual art works possible. Overviews of pigments and paint tincture by a number of authoritative authors in the 17th and 18th centuries are highlighted. The hidden selection rules of the colors and their conscious positioning in the box are discussed. Instructional illustrated is the visually completing of the missing paint cakes. Also included are some overviews of the selection of watercolor paint cakes in comparable boxes. The restored boxes and their contents are illustrated in a number of images. Finally, each of the 24 color cakes in the box of 1799-1800 is treated by their description in the 18th century literature. An extensive overview, with mainly 17th and 18th century sources on pigments, dyes, paint preparation, color theories, etc., is affixed. Added are contemporary authors who have written about the Reeves firm. Finally, nine attachments are available about a scheme of painting substances by Robert Dossie, the management structure of the Reeves firm till the 20th century, a pricelist of Robert Ackermann's paints in 1818, a text fragment in Ackermann’s Repository of Arts (1813), a reconstructed advertisment text in the Derby Mercury of April 10, 1794, a recepy for a binding mixture to make watercolor cakes, an article about an other way of making watercolor cakes of dough, text from W.T. Whitley about ‘Artists and their Friends in England’ during the Regency period and a list of authorities in the 18th-century literature on colors in the form of tinctures, based on natural resources and natural solvents and binders.
