Download or read book Out of Style written by Paul Butler and published by . This book was released on 2008-01-31 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Butler applauds the emerging interest in the study of style among scholars of rhetoric and composition, arguing that the loss of stylistics from composition in recent decades left it alive only in the popular imagination as a set of grammar conventions. Butler’s goal in Out of Style is to articulate style as a vital and productive source of invention, and to redefine its importance for current research, theory, and pedagogy. Scholars in composition know that the ideas about writing most common in the discourse of public intellectuals are egregiously backward. Without a vital approach to stylistics, Butler argues, writing studies will never dislodge the controlling fantasies of self-authorized pundits in the nation’s intellectual press. Rhetoric and composition must answer with a public discourse that is responsive to readers’ ongoing interest in style but is also grounded in composition theory.

Book Synopsis The Elements of Style Workbook by : William Strunk Jr
Download or read book The Elements of Style Workbook written by William Strunk Jr and published by . This book was released on 2018-07-10 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Elements of Style Workbook honors the original masterpiece by William Strunk, Jr. published in 1920, with relevant updates for modern times. We have adapted Strunk's original work to include essential exercises (with answer keys) to help novice writers gain command of stylistic structures and devices through guided practice, and to guide more experienced writers through the nuances of commanding style. Essential for today's writers, Strunk's original chapters regarding rules of usage and principles of composition are represented in this workbook. These original lessons, along with style exercises that teach writers to flex their writing style at will, include sentence writing, paragraph writing, and style writing exercises that amplify the impact of the original work by William Strunk, Jr. True to Strunk's original masterpiece, this Elements of Style Workbook addresses the most common and useful issues novice writers face, which are the same ones plaguing English writers for over a century. We honor Strunk's identification of these main writing challenges, and do not dilute the prominence of these points with either less difficult or more advanced grammatical lessons. In this way, we retain Strunk's original focus on the essentials. We have reproduced these essential lessons here and provided targeted practice to enable writers to strengthen those skills. While holding true to the original Elements of Style , this workbook also amplifies some troublesome yet vital stylistic points of practice with the following augmentations: -Grammar on past perfect -Expansive style section based on Noah Webster's style types -Extensive practice with the multitude of styles Webster delineates, using excerpts from literature masters as examples and guides None of these highly useful components were present in the original Elements of Style, nor have they been represented in any edition since then. Style Types The style section draws from Noah Webster's articulate delineations of style types. Each style type draws from a master of literature illustrating that particular style, then challenges writers to imitate, recreate, and alter styles at will. The following style types, identified by Webster, are included in this workbook: 1.Forceful 2.Vehement 3.Elegant 4.Brief 5.Copious or diffusive 6.Precise 7.Neat 8.Loose 9.Feeble 10.Plain Together, these style types represent the vast majority of writing styles used by literary masters in the English language. An English writing workbook like no other With its loyalty to the highly acclaimed and extremely successful original edition of Strunk's The Elements of Style , augmented by Webster's clearly defined articulation of style types and supplemented by ample, targeted, and clear exercises for each component, The Elements of Style Workbook offers an essential writing resource like no other. Whether you are beginning your journey to quality writing or would like to refine your command of voice and style, you will find this updated version of a tried-and-true resource, The Elements of Style Workbook , a vital aid and guide.

Download or read book Write Outside written by Amy Lynn Hess and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-08 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Write Outside is a handbook for college-level English composition courses. In addition to providing explanations and examples of effective writing strategies, the text includes outdoor activities and writing prompts that bridge and reinforce those key concepts. As one of the best ways to clear our minds and think deeply about our own ideas, being outdoors is intrinsically linked to the basic principles of effective writing. Being outdoors is not only about "unplugging" or taking a break from technology, but also offers students innumerable opportunities to experience a tangible, natural world. The psychological and physiological benefits of sunshine and fresh air cannot be underestimated. Additionally, structured or group-based outdoor activities give students shared, meaningful experiences on which to base their writing. Structured outdoor activities can help students who otherwise do not have an opportunity develop an appreciation for the natural world. The greatest gift simply being outdoors offers is the gift of quiet moments for unbroken thought. What is writing if not the culmination of hours of unbroken thought? In addition to an introduction that defines and offers explanations of paragraphs and essays, the book's contents are divided into three sections based on three core concepts of English composition: Modes of Communication Rhetorical Appeals The Writing Process Each section has been further divided into chapters that can be completed in any order, or the chapters can be used as supplemental readings, assignments, or bridging exercises in coordination with other texts. Key words and phrases that may be unfamiliar to students have been indexed. The outdoor activities suggested in each chapter are based on the idea that active learning practices are an inclusive pedagogy. These practices help students engage with one another, reduce their fears of writing, and increase successful completion of composition courses. The activities are appropriate for most geographical locations at any time of year, and for those working alone or with others. The activities give students opportunities to draw upon their creativity, practice both divergent and critical thinking skills, and collaborate. The activities might culminate in discussions, finished art projects, musical compositions, notes for use in written drafts, group projects, or multimedia presentations. The writing prompts are also broad and can be adapted by faculty in a variety of ways, including assignment length, scope or word count, level of formality, research requirements, and formatting or citation style. The instructions for each writing prompt also leave room for student creativity and individuality. Each chapter's instructions follow the steps in the writing process, which are briefly explained within the instructions and explained in greater detail in the third section of the book. Drafts that stem from the writing prompts might emerge as prewriting exercises, journal entries, graded written assignments, research documents, outlines, speeches, group presentations, blog posts, online discussions, or submissions to publishers. To put it succinctly, the outdoor activities and guided writing prompts are meant to be useful in whatever ways faculty and students may need them to be - all while giving them permission to simply spend time outdoors.
