Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Associations of Working Men Good wine, as the Old saying has it, needs no bush; and I think too highly of the good sense of my fellow-countrymen not to feel sure that a work in itself Of so much worth, and on a subject of such weighty import to England, as the one now introduced to the English public by the accomplished pen of Miss Taylor, would have made its own way without other aid than that of its own 'deserts. But if any words of mine may help it in so doing, as I am told they may, I cannot but give them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Devising Consumption by : Liz Mcfall
Download or read book Devising Consumption written by Liz Mcfall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book explores the vital role played by the financial service industries in enabling the poor to consume over the last hundred and fifty years. Spending requires means, but these industries offered something else as well – they offered practical marketing devices that captured, captivated and enticed poor consumers. Consumption and consumer markets depend on such devices but their role has been poorly understood both in the social sciences and in business studies and marketing. While the analysis of consumption and markets has been carved up between academics and practitioners who have been interested in either their social and cultural life or their economic and commercial organisation, consumption continues to be driven by their combination. Devising consumption requires practical mixtures of commerce and art whether the product is an insurance policy or the next gadget in the internet of things . By making the case for a pragmatic understanding of how ordinary, everyday consumption is orchestrated, the book offers an alternative to orthodox approaches, which should appeal to interdisciplinary audiences interested in questions about how markets work and why it matters.

Book Synopsis Nineteenth-Century Transatlantic Reprinting and the Embodied Book by : Jessica DeSpain
Download or read book Nineteenth-Century Transatlantic Reprinting and the Embodied Book written by Jessica DeSpain and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until the Chace Act in 1891, no international copyright law existed between Britain and the United States, which meant publishers were free to edit text, excerpt whole passages, add new illustrations, and substantially redesign a book's appearance. In spite of this ongoing process of transatlantic transformation of texts, the metaphor of the book as a physical embodiment of its author persisted. Jessica DeSpain's study of this period of textual instability examines how the physical book acted as a major form of cultural exchange between Britain and the United States that called attention to volatile texts and the identities they manifested. Focusing on four influential works”Charles Dickens's American Notes for General Circulation, Susan Warner's The Wide, Wide World, Fanny Kemble's Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation, and Walt Whitman's Democratic Vistas”DeSpain shows that for authors, readers, and publishers struggling with the unpredictability of the textual body, the physical book and the physical body became interchangeable metaphors of flux. At the same time, discourses of destabilized bodies inflected issues essential to transatlantic culture, including class, gender, religion, and slavery, while the practice of reprinting challenged the concepts of individual identity, personal property, and national identity.

Book Synopsis Soccer's Missing Men by : J.A. Mangan
Download or read book Soccer's Missing Men written by J.A. Mangan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now unknown or forgotten, influential schoolmasters took the game of association football to many parts of England. They had several roles: they brought the game to individual schools, they established regional and national leagues and associations, and they founded professional football clubs. They also exported the game around the world, working as moral missionaries, passionate players and energetic entrepreneurs. The role of teachers in association football is a much neglected aspect of English cultural history. It is a story that deserves to be told because it allows a fundamental reappraisal of the status and position of these teachers in late nineteenth century and early twentieth century society. This volume was previously published as a special issue of the journal Soccer and Society.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work.
