Book excerpt: We learn a foreign language in order to connect with the people of the country speaking it. Connecting may be necessary when work comes into play - perhaps not as relevant when pleasure, not business, is involved. In both cases, we are challenged by new structures, new patterns, new vocabulary which make sure that culture comes to life. Whenever possible, we look out for reassuring similarities with the language/s we are familiar with. Such similarities are not always (easily) found. At times, words and expressions are misleading since their meaning unexpectedly differs. At times, it is the people's customs and habits which puzzle us. This book attempts to straighten out some instances native speakers of English may find tricky when coming to grips with Italian.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The narrator arrives in Berlin, a place famed for its hedonism, to find peace and maybe love; only to discover that the problems which have long haunted him have arrived there too, and are more present than ever. As he approaches his fortieth birthday, nearing the age where his father was killed in a brutal revolution, he drifts through this endlessly addictive and sometimes mystical city, through its slow days and bottomless nights, wondering whether he will ever escape the damage left by his father's death. With the world as a whole more uncertain, as both the far-right and global temperatures rise at frightening speed, he finds himself fighting a fierce inner battle against his turbulent past, for a future free of his fear of failure, of persecution, and of intimacy. In The End, It Was All About Love is a journey of loss and self-acceptance that takes its nameless narrator all the way through bustling Berlin to his roots, a quiet village on the Uganda-Sudan border. It is a bracingly honest story of love, sexuality and spirituality, of racism, dating, and alienation; of fleeing the greatest possible pain, and of the hopeful road home.

Book Synopsis Explaining Contemporary Asian Military Modernization by : Sheryn Lee
Download or read book Explaining Contemporary Asian Military Modernization written by Sheryn Lee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-04-20 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes a novel theoretical framework of "interactive arming" in order to explain armament dynamics in contemporary Asia. Frequently, the modernisation of contemporary naval forces in Asia is described as an "arms race," with the underlying assumption being that weapons acquisitions and increases in defence expenditure are competitive and bilateral and due to conflicting purposes or mutual fears. This book argues that the concept of an arms race is an unsuitable one for explaining contemporary military modernisation in 21st-century Asia. Instead, it proposes a novel and innovative concept of "interactive arming" and argues that what drives conflict is political rivalry, not weapons acquisitions. Instead of perceiving arming as abnormal behaviour, the book views arming as a natural strategic behaviour of states and military modernisation as a basic requirement for a state’s ability to survive. This book will be of much interest to students of Asian security, strategic studies and international relations in general.
