Plus précisément, elle vise à approfondir la compréhension de l'engagement en tant que phénomène multidimensionnel dans le contexte spécifique d'un suivi en protection de la jeunesse au cours duquel l'enfant est placé dans un milieu substitut de manière temporaire. Elle vise à mieux comprendre et à bonifier les méthodes permettant d'évaluer l'engagement. La thèse porte une attention particulière au développement de différentes dimensions de ce phénomène (attitudes, relation parent-intervenant, comportements) en lien avec des facteurs clés. La première étude a permis de procéder à la validation française du seul instrument de mesure multidimensionnel de l'engagement parental disponible à ce jour et fournit des recommandations pour l'emploi de cet outil. L'établissement de propriétés psychométriques et le recours à une analyse factorielle confirmatoire ont permis d'en confirmer l'adéquation ainsi que la structure à quatre facteurs dans la population francophone du Québec. Grâce à l'établissement de la validité de construit, l'étude clarifie les liens entretenus entre les dimensions de l'engagement ainsi qu'avec des phénomènes apparentés, soit la satisfaction parentale à l'égard des services et la conformité aux attentes du système. Cette étude soutient la nécessité d'évaluer différentes facettes de l'engagement, mais souligne également les besoins et lacunes qui demeurent pour y parvenir. Au sein de la seconde étude, via une procédure d'analyses acheminatoires, la force de même que la direction des liens entre les dimensions de l'engagement parental au cours du suivi sont étudiées. Ceux qui existent entre les pratiques de l'intervenant et les dimensions d'engagement sont également examinés au sein d'un modèle afin de préciser les mécanismes en jeu. Ce second chapitre traite du processus d'engagement parental au cours d'une intervention en protection de la jeunesse par l'analyse de données empiriques; les résultats montrent que les éléments relationnels se trouvent au coeur du phénomène. Les pratiques employées par l'intervenant et se centrant sur les forces du parent favoriseraient le développement d'une relation de qualité entre eux. Une telle relation positive serait associée à l'adoption d'attitudes favorables à l'égard de l'intervention. En somme, cette thèse soutient la proposition voulant que l'engagement soit un phénomène multidimensionnel et souligne d'autant plus son caractère relationnel. Elle met par ailleurs en évidence tout autant la nécessité de poursuivre le travail afin de bonifier le processus d'évaluation de l'engagement, tant en recherche que dans les milieux de pratique, que celle de mieux comprendre les liens entretenus avec les retombées de l'intervention. La thèse fournit un apport tant aux chercheurs qu'aux praticiens intéressés par l'intervention auprès des clientèles pouvant présenter certaines résistances, mettant en lumière la pertinence de s'y intéresser de même que les manières de cibler leur engagement dans la démarche.

Certaines caractéristiques propres à la situation de placement sont également analysées comme étant des modérateurs potentiels de la relation entre la SI et la SA, soit le nombre de placements vécus par l’'enfant, l’'âge de celui-ci lors du placement ainsi que la durée du placement. Le type de famille d’'accueil dans lequel vit l'’enfant est analysé comme étant en lien avec la sécurité d'’attachement par le biais d’une médiation de la SI. L’'échantillon est composé de 41 enfants. Les résultats permettent d'’identifier la SI comme étant un facteur prépondérant pour la SA de l’'enfant, alors que les symptômes de dépression ne semblent pas contribuer à celle-ci. Les caractéristiques du placement ne modèrent pas le lien trouvé entre la SI et la SA, ce qui renforce l'importance des facteurs plus proximaux pour l’'enfant, comme la SI. Le lien entre le type de famille d’'accueil et la SA semble médiatisé par la SI.

Le retrait d'un enfant de sa famille biologique, pour le confier aux soins d'une autre famille est quelque chose de bouleversant tant pour l'enfant qui a tissé un lien d'attachement avec ses parents, que pour ces derniers qui peuvent y voir un déni de leur parentalité, un échec de leur part aux yeux de la société, ou une injustice des services de protection de l'enfance. Ces sentiments peuvent créer de la frustration, de la honte ou un déni de responsabilité, ou encore entrainer un refus de collaboration avec la société d'aide à l'enfance (SAE), ainsi que la naissance ou la résurgence de dynamiques familiales conflictuelles avec la parenté qui a accepté de prendre l'enfant en charge. Face au refus de collaboration et aux dynamiques familiales conflictuelles, comment les intervenantes et intervenants réussissent-ils à gérer cette triangulation, c'est-à-dire l'ensemble des interactions qui existent entre la SAE représentée par ces intervenantes et intervenants, la famille biologique de l'enfant et la parenté? La gestion de cette triangulation, pour l'harmonisation des points de vue des parties impliquées dans le processus du placement de l'enfant dans la parenté et l'engagement de la famille, s'avère être la médiation. Cette approche d'intervention permet aux parties en conflit de s'asseoir autour d'une table pour négocier une entente équitable qui ne lèse personne, et qui préserve les intérêts de l'enfant. Ce mémoire focalise sur ce que font exactement les intervenantes et intervenants dans le cadre de la médiation afin d'engager les parents à participer au bon déroulement du placement de l'enfant dans la parenté. En s'appuyant sur le modèle écologique, une recherche qualitative de nature exploratoire a été menée auprès de neuf intervenantes et intervenants chargés du placement de l'enfant dans la parenté, et travaillant dans l'une des SAE de la province de l'Ontario. Un guide d'entrevue semi-structuré a servi à la cueillette des données. Les résultats ont permis de mettre en lumière les facteurs qui favorisent la médiation et l'engagement familial, ou qui lui font obstacle, selon qu'ils appartiennent aux caractéristiques personnelles, familiales et environnementales des familles, au soutien financier accordé à la parenté ainsi qu'à la pratique des intervenantes et intervenants.

People want to know what goes on in families that give rise to amazing leaders and/or terrorists. For the first time in history we can understand the systems in which we live. The social sciences have been accumulating knowledge since the early fifties as to how we are regulated by others. S. Milgram, S. Ashe, P. Zimbardo and J. Calhoun, detail the vulnerability to being duped and deceived and the difficulty of cooperating when values differ. Murray Bowen, M.D., the first researcher to observe several live-in families, for up to three years, at the National Institute of Mental Health. Describing how family members overly influence one another and distribute stress unevenly, Bowen described both how symptoms and family leaders emerge in highly stressed families. Our brain is not organized to automatically perceive that each family has an emotional system, fine-tuned by evolution and "valuing" its survival as a whole, as much as the survival of any individual. It is easier to see this emotional system function in ants or mice but not in humans. The emotional system is organized to snooker us humans: encouraging us to take sides, run away from others, to pressure others, to get sick, to blame others, and to have great difficulty in seeing our part in problems. It is hard to see that we become anxious, stressed out and even that we are difficult to deal with. But "thinking systems" can open the doors of perception, allowing us to experience the world in a different way. This book offers both coaching ideas and stories from leaders as to strategies to break out from social control by de-triangling, using paradoxes, reversals and other types of interruptions of highly linked emotional processes. Time is needed to think clearly about the automatic nature of the two against one triangle. Time and experience is required as we learn strategies to put two people together and get self outside the control of the system. In addition, it takes time to clarify and define one's principles, to know what "I" will or will not do and to be able to take a stand with others with whom we are very involved. The good news is that systems' thinking is possible for anyone. It is always possible for an individual to understand feelings and to integrate them with their more rational brains. In so doing, an individual increases his or her ability to communicate despite misunderstandings or even rejection from important others. The effort involved in creating your Mindful Compass enables us to perceive the relationship system without experiencing it's threats. The four points on the Mindful Compass are: 1) Action for Self, 2) Resistance to Forward Progress, 3) Knowledge of Social Systems and the 4) The Ability to Stand Alone. Each gives us a view of the process one enters when making an effort to define a self and build an emotional backbone. It is not easy to find our way through the social jungle. The ability to know emotional systems well enough to take a position for self and to become more differentiated is part of the natural way humans cope with pressure. Now people can use available knowledge to build an emotional backbone, by thoughtfully altering their part in the relationship system. No one knows how far one can go by making an effort to be more of a self-defined individual in relationships to others. Through increasing emotional maturity, we can find greater individual freedom at the same time that we increase our ability to cooperate and to be close to others.
