Book Synopsis Land Use and Spatial Planning by : Graciela Metternicht

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reconciles competing and sometimes contradictory forms of land use, while also promoting sustainable land use options. It highlights land use planning, spatial planning, territorial (or regional) planning, and ecosystem-based or environmental land use planning as tools that strengthen land governance. Further, it demonstrates how to use these types of land-use planning to improve economic opportunities based on sustainable management of land resources, and to develop land use options that strike a balance between conservation and development objectives. Competition for land is increasing as demand for multiple land uses and ecosystem services rises. Food security issues, renewable energy and emerging carbon markets are creating pressures for the conversion of agricultural land to other uses such as reforestation and biofuels. At the same time, there is a growing demand for land in connection with urbanization and recreation, mining, food production, and biodiversity conservation. Managing the increasing competition between these services, and balancing different stakeholders’ interests, requires efficient allocation of land resources.
Book Synopsis Assessment of New Energy Use Policy in Land Use Planning by : Xun Liu
Download or read book Assessment of New Energy Use Policy in Land Use Planning written by Xun Liu and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study mainly focuses on how energy policies can improve the efficiency of new energy use. More specifically, this research addresses three major questions: 1) To what extent does California local planning addresses the new energy policies? 2)Which policies have local jurisdictions adopted to directly improve new energy use, and which strategies have received the most and least attention? 3) What methods or models can other place learn from California? In the United States, California has established a successful new energy use system. This paper uses California as a study area. California has 58 counties. The study sample is 37 counties which have energy plans and have updated them at least once. To systematically evaluate new energy use in these counties, the author examines six policies from energy and general plans. After that, the paper describes the characteristics of the six policies. Then discussion part may provide some helpful suggestions. In addition, these six policies could be adopted in other places; the suggested location is Guangdong Province in China, which has similarities with California and is deficient in adoption of new energy plans and new energy use.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transportation, Land Use, and Environmental Planning examines the practices and policies linking transportation, land use and environmental planning needed to achieve a healthy environment, thriving economy, and more equitable and inclusive society. It assesses best practices for improving the performance of city and regional transportation systems, looking at such issues as public transit and non-motorized travel investments, mixed use and higher density urban development, radically transformed vehicles, and transportation systems. The book lays out the growing need for greater integration of transportation, land use, and environmental planning, looking closely at changing demographic needs, public health concerns, housing affordability, equity, and livability. In addition, strategies for achieving these desired outcomes are presented, including urban design and land use planning, regional and corridor-level transit plans, bike and pedestrian improvements, demand management strategies, and emerging technologies and services. The final part of the book examines implementation challenges, considering lessons from the US and around the globe at both local and regional levels. Introduces never-before-published research Offers best practices for transit, cycling, urban design and housing provision Assesses emerging developments, such as smart cities, new vehicle technologies, automated highways and transportation sharing Examines the institutional and political dimensions of sustainability planning at the urban and regional levels Utilizes case studies from around the world that show alternative ways forward

Book Synopsis The Impact of Public Policy on Environmental Quality and Health by : Amer El-Ahraf
Download or read book The Impact of Public Policy on Environmental Quality and Health written by Amer El-Ahraf and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1999-06-30 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until now, an approach to land use management planning that not only addresses economic issues, but also environmental concerns and health issues of land use has been lacking. These issues are vital for public policy makers, decision-makers throughout the private sector, as well as all businesses and industries that share space with the communities they serve and draw from. This volume covers the legal and regulatory aspects of land use management, the process of land use planning, and all of the related environmental, health, and societal impacts that land use planning entails. This book provides a clear, multidisciplinary approach to a very complex set of issues. An essential resource not only for public administrators, policymakers, and planners, but for people with corresponding responsibilities in business and industry, their attorneys and other advisors, and for their colleagues with similar concerns. Because of their inestimable importance, land use decisions require thorough study and evaluation before project implementation—but what makes this a challenge is the uncommon breadth of knowledge and familiarity with a wide range of disciplines that decision makers must process—and yet few have the necessary background and training. El-Ahraf, Qayoumi, and Dowd have thus had to attack their topic from a variety of viewpoints and disciplines, such as urban plannning, environmental science, energy use, public health, as well as from the viewpoints of people whose concerns are primarily socioeconomic and legal. They take these disparate and often conflicting viewpoints and integrate them, giving readers a systematic way to acquire a holistic appreciation of the topic. Although the book focuses primarily on land use in the United States, it borrows relevant examples from international data. It is therefore useful not only as a text for college courses in the area of public health and urban planning, but as a reference for professionals in many different fields with related concerns.

Book Synopsis Planning and Environmental Protection by : Chris E Miller
Download or read book Planning and Environmental Protection written by Chris E Miller and published by Hart Publishing. This book was released on 2001-09 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays examines the roles which land use planning can play in the protection of the environment. The subjects covered range from traditional concerns like pollution, nuisance and contaminated land to biodiversity and the pursuit of sustainable development, which forms the defining element of current environmental policy across the European Community and in most other developed economies. Environmental assessment is discussed, along with the succession of public law actions (Twyford Down included) by environmental activists which were necessary to convince the English courts of the full implications (and the 'direct effect') of the EC Directive 85/337. The later chapters become progressively more concerned with the planning system as the forum of negotiation and more participatory approaches (as distinct from fiscal instruments and command and control regulation) to encouraging sustainability. The contributors represent a variety of academic disciplines (law, geography, planning, environmental management) offering complementary insights into the planner's role in allocating land uses so as to minimise waste generation and energy consumption as well as maximising local amenity.
