Book excerpt: Regular physical activity creates a myriad of physiological changes within the human body, almost all of it good. Exercise is, in fact, the heart and soul of physical and athletic development. The book you are reading however is not about that - youll need to read about the enhancement of muscular performance elsewhere. This is a book about the hows and whys of maximizing the caloric expenditure of exercise with the hopeful achievement of losing body fat. From such a perspective, I am at a current understanding that exercise designed to increase athletic ability does not necessarily carry-over to weight lossthe goal of weight reduction and the enhancement of physical performance require separate program designs. As part of my learning (data collecting) and teaching (data promoting) background, I count calories for a living and have been happily at it for over 30 years. The following chapters present energy cost estimates aka, calories (kcal) burned - based on numbers collected from actual laboratory measurements as well as speculative interpretations that have all been converted into an energy cost and fat loss appraisal: More vs. Less. I continue to search for those specific types of exercises and activities that yield the largest numbers, with my primary objective being to find those physical movements with the best potential to maximize caloric costs and fat burning. It is not a straightforward story

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose: To determine the energy expenditure and relative exercise intensity during a Pound® cardio jam session. Methods: Six male (age 22.8 ± 1.72 years) and 16 female (age 20.8 ± 2.17 years) subjects performed a graded exercise test on a treadmill. Then subject performed a 38-minute Pound® cardio-jam session. Heart rate and VO2 were monitored every minute throughout the workout and perceived exertion was recorded approximately every 4 minutes throughout the session using the Borg 6-20 RPE scale. Results: It was found that both %HRMax (males: 68 ± 5.2; females: 73 ± 6.8) and % VO2max (males: 39 ± 4.5; females: 42 ± 6.6) met ACSM guidelines for improving cardiorespiratory endurance. Throughout the workout subject considered the workout to be of "somewhat hard" intensity on the 6-20 Borg RPE scale (Average RPE = 12.7 ± 1.91). Energy expenditure for both males (280.8 ± 41.38 kcal/session) and females (221.8 ± 34.35 kcal/session) also met ASCM guidelines for weight loss. Males had a significantly higher energy expenditure than females due to higher body mass (165 ± 19.77 lbs vs. 149.5 ± 15.98 lbs). Conclusion: The Pound® cardio jam session meets the standards set forth by ACSM to improve cardiorespiratory fitness and weight composition.

Methods: Nineteen female (age 20.1 ± 1.14 years) subjects completed a maximal treadmill test and a 55-minute BODYJAM session. Heart rate and RPE recorded throughout the BODYJAM session. The HRs that were recorded during the workout were inserted into individual HR/VO2 regression equations to estimate VO2 and energy expenditure. Results: It was found that subjects exercised at an average of 73 ± 3.5% of %HRmax and 52 ± 6.6% of %VO2max. Energy expenditure averaged 393 ± 86.4 kcal/session and RPE during the workout averaged 11.5 ± 1.91. Conclusion: The BODYJAM session meets the standards set forth by ACSM to improve cardiorespiratory fitness and body composition, despite being perceived a light exertion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the energy cost of four modes of resistance training (push-ups, pull-ups, curl-ups, lunges). Twelve well trained men aged 23.6 (SD=2.84) years were recruited to participate in the study. Each of the 12 men completed three trials of each of the four exercises on one visit to the laboratory lasting slightly over one hour (M=72 min, SD=5.9 min). The oxygen consumption of the men was monitored constantly throughout the trial and data was recorded every five seconds. Mean VO2 values were calculated for each exercise. The values for push-ups (M=11.57 ml/kg/min, SD=1.99), curl-ups (M=10.99 ml/kg/min, SD=1.48), pull-ups (M=10.87 ml/kg/min, SD=2.51), and lunges (M=14.18 ml/kg/min, SD=1.78) were converted to METs (Metabolic Equivalents). The MET values (3.31, 3.14, 3.11, and 4.05 respectively) all fall within the range of moderate intensity activity. The findings of this study show that a single set of any of the above exercises will qualify as a moderate intensity activity and can be used to meet recommendations on daily physical activity.

Book excerpt: Caloric expenditure of hundreds of activities, including conditioning exercises, occupational activities such as masonry work, self-care activities such as dressing, and lawn care activities such as mowing, have been previously reported (Ainsworth et al., 2000). However, there is little research that has been done in this specific area of MET calculation in regards to elastic resistance training. Elastic resistance training is a type of training in which one uses an elastic band to create tension during resistance/strength exercise. While there are a variety of ways to evaluate exercise intensity, METs (Metabolic Equivalence of Tasks) were used to evaluate the energy cost for elastic resistance exercises. The purpose of this study was to determine the METs and caloric expenditure per minute associated with elastic resistance exercise. 15 undergraduate and graduate exercise science students (6 male; 9 female) ages 18-25 (21.60 plus/minus 1.99 years), completed 10 repetitions of 10 upper and lower body exercises using two different strengths of Thera-bands (blue; black). METs and caloric expenditure were calculated from participants' relative oxygen consumption. Data were analyzed and a significant difference (p

One function that might be affected is energy consumption during work or exercise. An experiment was conducted to examine the effect of temporal uncertainty about the duration of an exercise period on energy cost. A sample of 13 healthy, young male military officers were tested under controlled exercise routines with and without temporal uncertainty. Results indicated that there is a significant difference between similar tasks under temporal uncertainty and certainty. The task under uncertainty required less energy than the other task.
