Book excerpt: This volume presents current thoughts, research, and findings that were presented at a summit focusing on energy as a cross-cutting concept in education, involving scientists, science education researchers and science educators from across the world. The chapters cover four key questions: what should students know about energy, what can we learn from research on teaching and learning about energy, what are the challenges we are currently facing in teaching students this knowledge, and what needs be done to meet these challenges in the future? Energy is one of the most important ideas in all of science and it is useful for predicting and explaining phenomena within every scientific discipline. The challenge for teachers is to respond to recent policies requiring them to teach not only about energy as a disciplinary idea but also about energy as an analytical framework that cuts across disciplines. Teaching energy as a crosscutting concept can equip a new generation of scientists and engineers to think about the latest cross-disciplinary problems, and it requires a new approach to the idea of energy. This book examines the latest challenges of K-12 teaching about energy, including how a comprehensive understanding of energy can be developed. The authors present innovative strategies for learning and teaching about energy, revealing overlapping and diverging views from scientists and science educators. The reader will discover investigations into the learning progression of energy, how understanding of energy can be examined, and proposals for future directions for work in this arena. Science teachers and educators, science education researchers and scientists themselves will all find the discussions and research presented in this book engaging and informative.

Book excerpt: Energy education, defined as communication that is designed to influence peoples̀ energy usage, has been conducted in one form or another by a wide range of organizations since long before the energy crisis of 1973. Energy education is undertaken by a broad range of public, private, non-profit and utility organizations for a variety of purposes. Each program has a unique message, audience and objectives. Although many energy education programs are still in the early stages of development, some of the programs have been evaluated and show promising results. In an effort to consolidate, describe, and communicate information about the broad range of energy education efforts in this country, a survey was conducted. The surveys were developed to determine who provides energy education, what methods they use, and whether they evaluate the results. The results of the surveys are described and analyzed in the second section of this three-tiered report.

The conference addresses the issue of developing alternative energy sources. It also focuses on the major role teachers plays in the development of the children who will benefit from the outcome of the conference. The book provides some ideas about energy and teaching practices that have contributed to successful education of energy in the schools around the world. The text begins with an introduction to the concept of education as it relates to energy production and conversion. Some useful teaching methods are identified such as field trip activities, creating solar-powered projects and, the use of audio-visual aids. Guidelines in developing an energy curriculum are also discussed in the book. The text can serve as a useful tool for school directors, teachers, policymakers, students, and researchers in the field of education.

Book excerpt: The Development of a Best Practices Manual for the U.S. Department of Energy's Wind for Schools Project is an effort to provide the necessary research and data to make the completion of a Best Practices Manual possible. The Best Practices Manual will be used to help with the future development of Wind for Schools Projects nationally. The Wind for Schools Project was developed in 2005; currently 11 states are actively participating. As the Wind for Schools Project developed, various approaches and techniques were used to meet the goals of the program. A Best Practices Manual will serve as a repository of successful strategies and approaches employed by the program. The development of the Best Practices Manual focused on the research needed to understand the Wind for Schools Project; this included background on the U.S. Education System, a comprehensive study of the Wind for Schools Structure, a study of each 11 state programs, defining a best practice, the development and dispersion of a survey for the Wind for Schools Facilitators and Wind Application Center Directors, and a final outline for the Best Practices Manual. This effort is an attempt to pull together all the necessary research for the Best Practices Manual; which will in turn present generally-accepted, informally-standardized methods and techniques that have been developed to accomplish the three main goals of Wind for Schools.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major purpose of Federal energy education, extension, and information activities is to encourage the American people to adopt energy conservation measures and renewable fuel technologies. These energy outreach programs aid in developing consumer capability to make such changes through information and services tailored to communicate why changes in energy consumption behavior are important; the energy efficiency and renewable fuel options available; and associated short- and long-term cost savings. This first annual CPP report represents the initial step in formulating a continuing plan for coordinating Federal energy outreach programs. Major emphasis is given to inventorying existing programs, discussing the requirements for effective coordination, and presenting alternative methods for achieving it. An overview of Federal energy outreach programs is provided in Chapter 1, including the range of services, objectives, and target audiences. Chapter 2 concentrates on a discussion of other factors important to energy outreach program effectiveness, as detailed above. The last chapter concludes the report by discussing coordination of the programs.

Book excerpt: This book aims to give a contribution to a more comprehensive and interdisciplinary understanding of the cross-cutting issues on energy, environment and health research topics in the current world scenario, where nations all over the world are struggling to accomplish the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and to ensure sustainable patterns for all. This interdisciplinary implies a commitment between all fields of science, working together to provide knowledge that could result in the promotion of quality of life. At the present, it is evident that not all people benefit from sustainable policies and practices and the communication between health, energy, environmental and social problems is undeniable. A call for different views could be a pathway attracting universities, stakeholders, organizations and civil society to deeply discuss how one solution does not fit all societies. Few publications are coherently handling this matter. This book is expected to fill this gap and to develop an interest in a larger audience working in general sustainable development and cross-cutting issues. This book is produced by the European School of Sustainability Science and Research (ESSSR). It gives special emphasis to state-of-the-art descriptions of approaches, methods, initiatives and projects from universities, stakeholders, organizations and civil society across the world, regarding cross-cutting issues in energy, environment and health research.
