Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed overview of the latest innovations in respiratory endoscopy, from both diagnostic and therapeutic perspectives; each chapter focuses on one disease and the techniques for early diagnosis as well as treatment. It comprehensively covers treatment and procedures, including simultaneous X-ray fluoroscopy and its use during bronchoscopic procedures. This fast-developing technology is essential for the medical management of non-malignant and malignant diseases of the chest, especially lung cancer. Respiratory Endoscopy describes the cooperation between all the members of the healthcare team, and as such is a valuable resource not only for medical staff, but also for radiological technicians and nursing staff who contribute significantly in the care of the patients undergoing these invasive procedures. By promoting teamwork and providing practical know-how, it will improve the success and safety of respiratory endoscopy procedures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first version of this atlas was released as video-assisted major pulmonary resections were just emerging as a valid alternative to conventional techniques. In this second edition, many different techniques have been described, depending on the use or non-use of an accessory mini-thoracotomy and on the use or non-use of endoscopic instrumentation and video display. One of these techniques is the totally endoscopic approach, in which only endoscopic instruments and monitor control are used. This is the technique that will be described in this atlas. The purpose of this atlas is to describe each endoscopic pulmonary lobectomy and segmentectomy step by step, relying on brief technical notes and high-quality still pictures which are orientated and labeled to make them as comprehensible as possible. Each chapter is introduced by an anatomical background which is illustrated by three-dimensional reconstructions. Technical «tricks» and specific dangers are mentioned by pictograms. The technical descriptions of this atlas are based on the author’s technique, which can be different from other video-assisted approaches. Our intent is that surgeons embarking in video-assisted major pulmonary resections-whatever the approach they use-can find helpful hints and take their bearings in this totally new vision of pulmonary and mediastinal anatomy.Compared to the previous version, all chapters have been rewritten, taking into account the progresses of the technique and the technology and some new chapters have been added. Most steps of the procedures are now illustrated, not only with pictures, but also with a video clip.

Millions of miles of optical fiber carry voice and data signals around the world. Lasers are used in surgery of the retina, kidneys, and heart. New high-efficiency light sources promise dramatic reductions in electricity consumption. Night-vision equipment and satellite surveillance are changing how wars are fought. Industry uses optical methods in everything from the production of computer chips to the construction of tunnels. Harnessing Light surveys this multitude of applications, as well as the status of the optics industry and of research and education in optics, and identifies actions that could enhance the field's contributions to society and facilitate its continued technical development.

Book excerpt: Written by some of the world's leading practitioners - and pioneers - in the field, Thoracic Endoscopy is the first up-to-the-minute, expert reference for clinicians with a solid foundation in diagnostic bronchoscopy and chest medicine needing to extend their clinical expertise in response to two decades of rapid development. Thoracic Endoscopy covers four key areas of practice: advanced diagnostic bronchoscopy the latest techniques for interventional bronchoscopy — including the traditional rigid bronchoscopy techniques, ablative instruments and stents — and a discussion of endobronchial lung reduction and gene therapy a window to the pleura, covering the field of pleuroscopy and the advances in diagnosis and treatment clinical problems and methodologies, and strategies for solving them using interventional techniques Thoracic Endoscopy presents the only coherent guide to the full range of techniques and practice patterns, and is the essential reference for both experienced interventional pulmonologists and students beginning to practice in this rapidly-developing field.

Book excerpt: Principles of Immunopharmacology provides a unique source of essential knowledge on the immune response, its diagnosis and its modification by drugs and chemicals. The 4th edition of this internationally recognized textbook has been revised to include recent developments, but continues the established format, dealing with four related fields in a single volume, thus obviating the need to refer to several different textbooks. The first section of the book, providing a basic introduction to immunology and its relevance for human disease, has been updated to accommodate new immunological concepts, particularly the role of epigenetics and the latest understanding of cancer immunology. The second section on immunodiagnostics offers a topical description of widely used molecular techniques and a new chapter on imaging techniques. This is followed by a systematic coverage of drugs affecting the immune system, including natural products. This third section contains 15 updated chapters, covering classical immunopharmacological topics such as anti-asthmatic, anti-rheumatic and immunosuppressive drugs, but also deals with antibiotics, plant-derived and dietary agents, with new chapters on monoclonal antibodies, immunotherapy in sepsis and infection, drugs for soft-tissue autoimmunity and cell therapy. The book concludes with a chapter on immunotoxicology and drug safety tests. Aids to the reader include a two-column format, glossaries of technical terms and appendix reference tables. The emphasis on illustrations is maintained from the first three editions. The book is a valuable single reference for undergraduate and graduate medical and biomedical students, postgraduate chemistry and pharmacy students, researchers in chemistry, biochemistry and the pharmaceutical industry and researchers lacking basic immunological knowledge, who want to understand the actions of drugs on the immune system.

Book excerpt: To describe principles of optical imaging including chemistry and physics of fluorescence, limitations/advantages of optical imaging compared to metabolic and anatomic imaging. Describe hardware adapted for small animal imaging and for clinical applications: endoscopes and operative microscopes. Outline FDA approved and newer optical imaging probes. Include discussion of chemistry and linkage to other proteins. Review current techniques to image cancer and the development of techniques to specifically image cancer cells. Review use of exploiting differences in tissue autofluorescence to diagnose and treat cancer. Include agents such as 5-aminoleculinic acid. Review mechanisms that require proteolytic processing within the tumor to become active fluorophores. Review use of cancer selective proteins to localize probes to cancer cells: include toxins, antibodies, and minibodies. Introduction of plasmids, viruses or other genetic material may be used to express fluorescent agents in vivo. This chapter will review multiple vectors and delivery mechanisms of optical imaging cassettes.Preclinical investigations into the use of optical contrast agents for the detection of primary tumors in conventional and orthotopic models will be discussed. Preclinical investigations into the use of optical contrast agents for the detection of metastatic tumors in mouse models will be discussed. Use of targeted and non-specific optical contrast agents have been used for the detection of sentinel lymph node detection. These applications and how they differ from other applications will be discussed. Because of the unique difficulty of identifying tumor from normal tissue in brain tissue, a separate chapter would be needed. More clinical data is available for this cancer type than any other. Discussion of potential clinical applications for optical imaging and an assessment of the potential market.
