Book excerpt: Work practices and organizational processes vary widely and evolve constantly. The technological infrastructure has to follow, allowing or even supporting these changes. Traditional approaches to software engineering reach their limits whenever the full spectrum of user requirements cannot be anticipated or the frequency of changes makes software reengineering cycles too clumsy to address all the needs of a specific field of application. Moreover, the increasing importance of ‘infrastructural’ aspects, particularly the mutual dependencies between technologies, usages, and domain competencies, calls for a differentiation of roles beyond the classical user–designer dichotomy. End user development (EUD) addresses these issues by offering lightweight, use-time support which allows users to configure, adapt, and evolve their software by themselves. EUD is understood as a set of methods, techniques, and tools that allow users of software systems who are acting as non-professional software developers to 1 create, modify, or extend a software artifact. While programming activities by non-professional actors are an essential focus, EUD also investigates related activities such as collective understanding and sense-making of use problems and solutions, the interaction among end users with regard to the introduction and diffusion of new configurations, or delegation patterns that may also partly involve professional designers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Management of End User Computing: A Research Perspective Based on interviews with 200 end users and 50 information systems managers concerned with end user computing, end users can be classified into six distinct types. Each of them needs differentiated education, support and control from the Information Systems function. End users exist primarily in staff functions. They develop and use a wide spectrum of computing applications ranging from "operational systems" of the type usually developed by information systems professionals to complex analytical programs. To support a large number of their applications a new computing environment, "the third environment" (in addition to the traditional COBOL and timesharing environments) must be developed by Information Systems (I/S) management. Close attention must also be paid by I/S management to the need to involve "functional support personnel" (end users in each functional area who spend most of their time programming and aiding other end users) in the I/S end user management process. An end user strategy is needed in each organization. In addition, users cite increasing needs for support from I/S management. Finally, a new type of "control" process is necessary if end user computing is to be well managed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2012-11-11 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organizational computing has been critical to the development of medical informatics. Many end user applications (EUAs), such as FileMaker Pro, have been applied to support medical staff work at hospitals in Japan recently. This e-book describes how to use FileMaker Pro with hospital information systems (HISs). EUAs are described with relation to tools used for development, their functions, coordination methods with HIS, how to use them, their effectiveness, and their problems. While not all of the applications fulfill complete requirements for RASIS, and are not established, they give us new perspectives regarding HISs. This e-book also provides readers with various suggestions on how to use HISs more effectively, how to coordinate EUAs with HIS, how to manage end user applications, and how to achieve clinical effectiveness with EUAs. This volume is specialized in the use of FileMaker Pro at hospitals and all of the developers of FileMaker Pro systems. The respective authors are medical doctors at various departments of hospitals in contrast to conventional developers who are usually unfamiliar with medical information requirements. These two features make this e-book more clinically significant and facilitate end users to handle HISs more easily.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since computer scientists make decisions every day that have societal context and influence, an understanding of society and computing together should be integrated into computer science education. Showing students what they can do with their computing degree, Computers and Society: Computing for Good uses concrete examples and case studies to highlight the positive work of real computing professionals and organizations from around the world. Each chapter profiles a corporation, nonprofit organization, or entrepreneur involved in computing-centric activities that clearly benefit society or the environment, including cultural adaptation in a developing country, cutting-edge medicine and healthcare, educational innovation, endangered species work, and help for overseas voters. The coverage of computing topics spans from social networking to high-performance computing. The diversity of people and activities in these profiles gives students a broad vision of what they can accomplish after graduation. Pedagogical Features Encouraging students to engage actively and critically with the material, the book offers a wealth of pedagogical sections at the end of each chapter. Questions of varying difficulty ask students to apply the material to themselves or their surroundings and to think critically about the material from the perspective of a future computing professional. The text also gives instructors the option to incorporate individual projects, team projects, short projects, and semester-long projects.
