The text also describes the types of organization in plants; the internal and external structure of the stem, the leaf, and the root; and water and salt balance, with regard to the translocation of materials. The energy procurement and the synthetic processes in autotrophic plants; the respiration and energy transformations; and nitrogen metabolism are also considered. The book further tackles heterotrophy; reproduction; heredity; development; and the movement of plants. Botanists, cytologists, plant physiologists, and students taking related courses will find the text invaluable.

Book excerpt: Plant Physiology: A Treatise, Volume IX: Water and Solutes in Plants explores problems associated with water and solutes of plants as they grow. This book considers water relations of plant cells, along with transpiration and water balance, the physiology of stomata, ion uptake by roots from the soil, and salt relations of plants. This volume is organized into seven chapters and begins with an introduction to the water potential terminology used by plant physiologists in describing the water relations of plant communities, individual plants and their organs, and plant cells. An account of the elastic properties and hydraulic conductivity of plant cell walls is provided. The following chapters focus on the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum, water uptake and movement through plants, the effects of water deficit on plant development and other processes, and the mechanics of stomatal functioning. The book also introduces the reader to salt relations of plant cells, tissues, and roots as well as long-distance transport in the phloem, and then concludes by discussing the solute composition of cells during development. This book is a valuable resource for teachers, research workers, and students with specific interest in plant physiology.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Respiration is a large and important component of the carbon economy of crops. There are already several good books dealing with the biochemistry and physiol ogy of plant respiration, but there are none I know of that are devoted to the rela tionship between respiration and crop productivity, although this relationship is more and more frequently being studied with both experiment and simulation. Crop physiology books do cover respiration, of course, but the treatment is limited. The purpose of the present book is to fill this void in the literature. The approach taken here is to use the popular two-component functional model whereby respiration is divided between growth and maintenance components. Mter thoroughly reviewing the literature, I came to the conclusion that at present this is the most useful means of considering respiration as a quantitative compo nent of a crop's carbon economy. This functional distinction is used as the frame work for describing respiration and assessing its role in crop productivity. Discussions and critiques of the biochemistry and physiology of respiration serve primarily as a means of more fully understanding and describing the functional approach to studying crop respiration. It is assumed that the reader of this book is familiar with the fundamentals of plant physiology and biochemistry. The research worker in crop physiology should find this an up-to-date summary of crop respiration and the functional model of respiration. This book is not, however, a simple review of existing data.

General topics include a historical perspective of the advancements in crop improvement; cultivar systematics and biochemical and molecular markers in crop improvement programs; the genetics of physiological and biochemical processes affecting crop yield; the genetics of photosynthesis, chloroplast, relevant enzymes, and mutations; osmoregulation/adjustment and the production of protective compounds in relation to drought tolerance; and the biochemistry of disease resistance, including elicitors, defense response genes, their role in the production of phytoalexins and other strategies against pathogens. Other topics include quality breeding (e.g., molecular gene structure, changing individual amino acids, enhancing nutritive value of proteins) and biotechnology/genetic engineering. Geneticists, biochemists, botanists, agricultural specialists and others involved in crop improvement and breeding should consider this volume essential reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Methods of Plant Analysis When the handbook Modern Methods of Plant Analysis was first introduced in 1954 the considerations were 1. the dependence of scientific progress in biology on the improvement of existing and the introduction of new methods; 2. the inavailability of many new analytical methods concealed in specialized journals not normally accessible to experimental plant biologists; 3. the fact that in the methods sections of papers the description of methods is frequently so compact, or even sometimes so incomplete, that experiments are difficult to reproduce. These considerations still stand today. The series was highly successful, seven volumes appearing between 1956 and 1964. Since today there is still a demand for the old series, the publisher has decided to resume publication of Modern Methods of Plant Analysis. It is hoped that the New Series will be as acceptable to those working in plant sciences and related fields as the early volumes undoubtedly were. It is difficult to single out the major reasons for success of any publication, but we believe that the methods published in the first series were up-to-date at the time and the descriptions as applied to plant material so complete in themselves that there was little need to consult other publications.
