Book excerpt: A systematic presentation of the status of women of India throughout the long history of about 6000 years has been presented starting from the Vedic times to the post-independence period. A detailed description of the status of women during the Vedic times, which is rarely available in any of the existing literature, and in the following periods is very significant to the study of this subject. The author has discussed how the political and religious conditions over the periods have affected the conditions of women. The age-old evils, which had got firmly entrenched in the Indian society, such as the tradition of Sati, illiteracy, child marriages, and deplorable treatment of widows and so on, still persist and some new ones have joined the list. These are: bride burning, dowry, female feticide, domestic violence, to name a few. Short biographies of some outstanding women have been included to illustrate that in spite of adversities some women had achieved eminence. To the credit of the Indian Government, legislative measures have been taken to protect and improve the status of women after independence and just prior to it. These have been outlined. Unfortunately, these measures have not been able to achieve their intended results on account of wide spread corruption and lack of education and awareness among women, especially in the rural areas. A snapshot of the present conditions is given along with concluding remarks and recommendations for improvement. Improvement of the status of women is extremely improvement for India if it wishes to become a developed and progressive country and a world leader in culture and ideology.

Book Synopsis An Encyclopaedia of Indian Archaeology by : A. Ghosh
Download or read book An Encyclopaedia of Indian Archaeology written by A. Ghosh and published by South Asia Books. This book was released on 1989 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This encyclopedia was initiated to accomplish the ambitious task of presenting the findings of the last 150 years of Indian archaeology in a single compendium. More than 100 scholars were selected to contribute essays dealing with the prehistory, protohistory, & the ancient historical period up to the 12th century. Volume 1 is organized into 20 subject chapters including dating, pottery, rock art, settlements, technology, cultures, etc. A third of this volume is devoted to the chapter on cultures, which are defined & named basically by time periods, e.g., Mesolithic, Neolithic, Iron Age, etc. Volume 1 is copiously indexed & extensive bibliographic references are provided at the ends of sections within the chapters. Volume 2 is a gazetteer of known & excavated sites arranged alphabetically; extensive treatment is given to large & important sites. Each volume makes references to appropriate entries in the other. Although the introduction mentions the general reader, the encyclopedia is written by archaeologists & primarily for archaeologists; one needs a good background in archaeology to find it useful. The entries provide highly detailed & specific information. Entries are well written & this will remain the most authoritative reference work in its area for years. A must acquisition for graduate & research libraries with collections in this field.--C. J. Busick, University of Colorado.
