Book Synopsis The Post Office by : Rabindranath Tagore
Download or read book The Post Office written by Rabindranath Tagore and published by Graphic Arts Books. This book was released on 2021-10-12 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Post Office (1914) is a play by Rabindranath Tagore. Published following his ascension to international fame with the 1912 Nobel Prize in Literature, the play was introduced to an international audience by W. B. Yeats. When the Irish poet discovered Tagore’s work in translation, he felt an intense kinship with a man whose work was similarly grounded in spirituality and opposition to the British Empire. Brought to Dublin’s Abbey Theatre in 1913, The Post Office remains one of Tagore’s most influential literary works. “The doctor says all the organs of his little body are at loggerheads with each other, and there isn't much hope for his life. There is only one way to save him and that is to keep him out of this autumn wind and sun.” Under doctor’s orders, Amal is confined to his uncle’s home and courtyard, encouraged in his studies despite his desire to experience the world beyond books. Standing at the front gate, he watches life pass him by along the road, speaking with whoever will stop to listen. When construction begins on a new post office nearby, Amal dreams of one day serving as a messenger for the king. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Rabindranath Tagore’s The Post Office is a classic of Indian literature reimagined for modern readers.
Book Synopsis Exile and the Nation by : Afshin Marashi
Download or read book Exile and the Nation written by Afshin Marashi and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2020-06-08 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of the seventh-century Islamic conquest of Iran, Zoroastrians departed for India. Known as the Parsis, they slowly lost contact with their ancestral land until the nineteenth century, when steam-powered sea travel, the increased circulation of Zoroastrian-themed books, and the philanthropic efforts of Parsi benefactors sparked a new era of interaction between the two groups. Tracing the cultural and intellectual exchange between Iranian nationalists and the Parsi community during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Exile and the Nation shows how this interchange led to the collective reimagining of Parsi and Iranian national identity—and the influence of antiquity on modern Iranian nationalism, which previously rested solely on European forms of thought. Iranian nationalism, Afshin Marashi argues, was also the byproduct of the complex history resulting from the demise of the early modern Persianate cultural system, as well as one of the many cultural heterodoxies produced within the Indian Ocean world. Crossing the boundaries of numerous fields of study, this book reframes Iranian nationalism within the context of the connected, transnational, and global history of the modern era.

Book Synopsis The Recognition of Shakntala by : Kali dasa
Download or read book The Recognition of Shakntala written by Kali dasa and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2006-11 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The play Shakuntala was one of the first examples of Indian literature to be read in translation in Europe. Shakuntala's story is a leitmotiv that recurs in many works of Indian literature and culminates in the master Kali-dasa's drama for the stage. The virtuous heroine is forgotten by her betrothed, the king Dushyanta, only to be refound thanks to a distinguishing signet ring discovered by a fisherman in the belly of one of his catch. The final act distills the essence of human forgiveness, in Shakuntala's gracious release of her husband from his guilt.
