Book Synopsis Ancient Perspectives on Aristotle's De Anima by : Gerd van Riel
Download or read book Ancient Perspectives on Aristotle's De Anima written by Gerd van Riel and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aristotle's treatise On the Soul figures among the most influential texts in the intellectual history of the West. It is the first systematic treatise on the nature and functioning of the human soul, presenting Aristotle's authoritative analyses of, among others, sense perception, imagination, memory, and intellect. The ongoing debates on this difficult work continue the commentary tradition that dates back to antiquity. This volume offers a selection of essays by distinguished scholars, exploring the ancient perspectives on Aristotle's De anima, from Aristotle's earliest successors through the Aristotelian Commentators at the end of Antiquity.

Book Synopsis Lectures on Functor Homology by : Vincent Franjou
Download or read book Lectures on Functor Homology written by Vincent Franjou and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book features a series of lectures that explores three different fields in which functor homology (short for homological algebra in functor categories) has recently played a significant role. For each of these applications, the functor viewpoint provides both essential insights and new methods for tackling difficult mathematical problems. In the lectures by Aurélien Djament, polynomial functors appear as coefficients in the homology of infinite families of classical groups, e.g. general linear groups or symplectic groups, and their stabilization. Djament’s theorem states that this stable homology can be computed using only the homology with trivial coefficients and the manageable functor homology. The series includes an intriguing development of Scorichenko’s unpublished results. The lectures by Wilberd van der Kallen lead to the solution of the general cohomological finite generation problem, extending Hilbert’s fourteenth problem and its solution to the context of cohomology. The focus here is on the cohomology of algebraic groups, or rational cohomology, and the coefficients are Friedlander and Suslin’s strict polynomial functors, a conceptual form of modules over the Schur algebra. Roman Mikhailov’s lectures highlight topological invariants: homoto py and homology of topological spaces, through derived functors of polynomial functors. In this regard the functor framework makes better use of naturality, allowing it to reach calculations that remain beyond the grasp of classical algebraic topology. Lastly, Antoine Touzé’s introductory course on homological algebra makes the book accessible to graduate students new to the field. The links between functor homology and the three fields mentioned above offer compelling arguments for pushing the development of the functor viewpoint. The lectures in this book will provide readers with a feel for functors, and a valuable new perspective to apply to their favourite problems.

Book Synopsis Manifestations of Reason: Life, Historicity, Culture Reason, Life, Culture Part II by : Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka
Download or read book Manifestations of Reason: Life, Historicity, Culture Reason, Life, Culture Part II written by Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1993-10-31 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Can there be a more flagrant challenge to the recent - and classic - relativisms, scepticisms and 'deconstructivisms' toward reason, rationality, logos than the Vision of the Manifestation of Life?" As Tymieniecka writes in the introduction to this second book on the constructive appreciation of reason (first book: Analecta Husserliana, Vol. XXXIX), the works of the logos manifest themselves indubitably in the edifice of life. Among perspectives in the compass of reason of this collection: individualisation of life, human existence, reason and doxa (studies by Tymieniecka, Kelkel, Schrag, Buscaroli, Kelly, Laycock, and others) the emphasis falls upon `inner rationalities' of the spirit, creativity, culture (Bosio, D'Ippolito, Delle Site, Barral, Wittkowski, Regina, Haney, Ales Bello, Sivak, Elosequi), culminating in the issues of historiography and history by Mario Sancipriano, to whom the book is dedicated. This collection stems from the work of The World Phenomenology Institute, mainly its two congresses held in Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia, and Verona, Italy.
Book Synopsis Old is the New Young by : Matt Narrett
Download or read book Old is the New Young written by Matt Narrett and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2009-08-04 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Burns once remarked, “You can't help getting older, but you can help getting old.” With twenty-five years of experience working with seniors and studying aging, the Erickson Corporation has amassed a wealth of insights that support this maxim. In Old Is the New Young, three leading specialists take the latest clinical research findings on aging and how to improve and maintain health to produce a one-of-a-kind book replete with easily accessible tools and simple steps that all those over fifty can apply to their own lives. Old is the New Young approaches aging as a three-part process: keeping what's intact; recovering what's been lost; and compensating when necessary. Weaving in inspiring life stories with plenty of laughs from seniors themselves, it comprises four sections that address the key aspects of life—mental, physical, social, and financial—and how to keep them thriving as we grow . . . young.
