Drama, wit, sentiments, humour, and surprising turns meld into a captivating composition. It escorts readers on a journey alongside characters whose lives intertwine with the extraordinary and the familiar. Among mirth, tears, and awe, the tale unfolds the art of storytelling, a vehicle that transcends the limits of reality. Anthony's heroic transformation saved Isabella from a fire in France but left her with a growing sense of loss. However, her unexpected pregnancy with Gabriel hinted at new mysteries to come. Isabella found solace in writing after enduring hardships and inheriting her aunt's house in Quebec City. Gabriel inherited magical gifts from his father but on a more advanced level, including the ability to transform and melt objects with emotional surges. His journey involved forming a bond with Lea, the ghost, experiencing surreal time-travel adventures, and enduring emotional turmoil with multiple twists and turns. Ahern, with a mixed heritage, explored various careers, including that of a lawyer and pimp. He had comical encounters with George. However, tragedy struck when he was fatally shot, leading to Phillip taking over his lifeless body. Celine, after discovering years of unusual infidelity by her partner with both men and women, found support from her old friend, Anne, the surgeon, and embraced positive change with humourous adventures. Celine's psychic visions unveiled truths about Phillip's death, his spirit inhabiting Ahern, and the missing father, Gabriel. Phillip hired Matti for his lavender farm, and a mission unfolded in Seattle to search for and save Gabriel from a space disaster. The family's history through time and generations was narrated by Isabella to her great-granddaughter, Colette.

Book excerpt: This study examines tales from The Metamorphoses by the Roman poet Ovid (43 BC-18 AD) and from The Lais by the French poet Marie de France (fl. mid-to late twelfth century) to explore a paradox: how can a vibrant, complex, and timeless vision be conveyed in convention-informed and time-bound language? Marie plays against Ovid’s tales to probe the dilemma, thereby echoing Ovid who does the same to the canonical literary monuments of his day. Both poets suggest that poetry can avoid the flattening effect of monumental canonizing not only by the creative use of literary echoes, but also by shifting perspectives on the conventional, which in turn, can encourage readers to see reflections of many stories in any given tale. Ovid and Marie suggest and encourage in this manner by presenting literary love’s topoi and traditional lovers from a variety of metaliterary perspectives, thereby eliciting active readerly memory as well as providing the opportunity to see the conventional afresh, activity that allows even canonical texts to become living memorials.

Book excerpt: In »Call Me Ishmael«, Charles Olson exclaims »SPACE to be the central fact to man born in America«. Indeed, from the start, history and identity in America have been intricately tied to issues of space: from the idea of the »city upon a hill« to the transnational (soft) power of the United States, space has always served as an important parameter of power gained or lost and of the struggles to maintain or resist it. With contributions that range from the construction of America in (European) academic discourses to children's fiction, this collection provides an extensive and insightful study of how space influences our understanding of America.

The first major collection of its kind, Creole Echoes contains over a hundred of these poems by more than thirty different poets, presented by M. Lynn Weiss in their original French alongside new English translations by Norman R. Shapiro. The poems gathered here were all composed in French by Louisiana residents of European, African, and Caribbean origin. Their themes range from love and history to nightmare and childhood recollection. In these pages somber elegies meet whimsical surprises, and rhyming animal fables meet political panegyrics. "

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the 1960s until his death in 2000, Al Purdy was one of the most prominent writers in Canada, famous for his frank language and his boisterous personality. He travelled the country and wrote about its people and places from Newfoundland to Vancouver Island. A central figure in the CanLit explosion of the sixties and seventies, Purdy has been called the best, the most, and the last Canadian poet. But Purdy's Canada no longer exists. A changing country and shifting attitudes toward Canadian literature demand new perspectives on Purdy's impact and accomplishments. An Echo in the Mountains reassesses Purdy's works, the shape of his career, and his literary legacy, grappling with the question of how to read Purdy today, a century after his birth and in a new era of Canadian literature. Contributors to the volume examine Purdy's critical reception, explore little-known documents and textual problems, and analyze his representations of Canadian history and Indigenous peoples and cultures. They show that much remains to be discovered and understood about the poet and his immense body of work. The first sustained examination of Al Purdy's works in over a decade, An Echo in the Mountains showcases the critical challenges and rewards of rereading an iconic and influential Canadian writer.
