Book excerpt: Enantioselective liquid-liquid extraction (ELLE) is an implementation of the extraction of one enantiomer from a racemic mixture by the transfer between two liquid phases. This technology is very promising for obtaining enantiopure compounds and becomes the object of much attention in recent years after the development of appropriate equipment that reduces the time and cost of the separation of enantiomers. The major objective for the successful introduction of ELLE to industrial world is the discovery of reliable, inexpensive and durable chiral hosts selective for a wide range of chiral substances. In this work the possibility of performing ELLE in chiral ionic liquids environment was verified. Many new chiral ionic liquids were prepared to play the role of chiral hosts. The best example shows enantiomeric excess of 30% and operational selectivity of 1.97. This represents the first example of using chiral ionic liquids in ELLE and without metallic ions.

Book excerpt: The successful implementation of greener chemical processes relies not only on the development of more efficient catalysts for synthetic chemistry but also, and as importantly, on the development of reactor and separation technologies which can deliver enhanced processing performance in a safe, cost-effective and energy efficient manner. Process intensification has emerged as a promising field which can effectively tackle the challenges of significant process enhancement, whilst also offering the potential to diminish the environmental impact presented by the chemical industry. Following an introduction to process intensification and the principles of green chemistry, this book presents a number of intensified technologies which have been researched and developed, including case studies to illustrate their application to green chemical processes. Topics covered include: • Intensified reactor technologies: spinning disc reactors, microreactors, monolith reactors, oscillatory flow reactors, cavitational reactors • Combined reactor/separator systems: membrane reactors, reactive distillation, reactive extraction, reactive absorption • Membrane separations for green chemistry • Industry relevance of process intensification, including economics and environmental impact, opportunities for energy saving, and practical considerations for industrial implementation. Process Intensification for Green Chemistry is a valuable resource for practising engineers and chemists alike who are interested in applying intensified reactor and/or separator systems in a range of industries to achieve green chemistry principles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of important advances in asymmetric synthesis, chiral compounds cannot all be obtained in a pure state by asymmetric synthesis. As a result, enantiomer separation remains an important technique for obtaining optically active materials. Although asymmetric synthesis is a once-only procedure, an enantiomer separation process can be repeated until the optically pure sample is obtained. This book discusses several new enantiomer separation methods using modern techniques developed by experts in the field. These methods consist mainly of the following three types: 1) Enantiomer separation by inclusion complexation with a chiral host compound 2) Enantiomer separation using biological methods 3) Enantiomer separation by HPLC chromatography using a column containing a chiral stationary phase. Separation of a racemic compound has been called “optical resolution” or simply “resolution”. Nowadays, the descriptions “enantiomer resolution” or “enantiomer separation” are also commonly used. Accordingly, “Enantiomer Separation” is used in the title of this book. The editor and all chapter contributors hope that this book is helpful for scientists and engineers working in this field.

Book excerpt: What drives a scientist to edit a book on a speci c scienti c subject such as chiral mechanisms in separation methods? Until December 2005, the journal Analytical Chemistry of the American Chemical Society (Washington, DC) had an A-page section that was dedicated to simple and clear presentations of the most recent te- niques or the state of the art in a particular eld or topic. The “A-page” section was prepared for a broad audience of chemists including industrial professionals, s- dents as well as academics looking for information outside their eld of expertise. 1 Daniel W. Armstrong, one of the editors of this journal and a twenty-year+ long friend, invited me to present my view on chiral recognition mechanisms in a simple and clear way in an “A-page” article. In 2006, the “A-page” section was maintained as the rst articles at the beginning of each rst bi-monthly issue but the pagination was no longer page distinguished from the regular research articles published by the journal. During the time between the invitation and the submission, the A-page section was integrated into the rest of the journal and the article appeared as (2006) Anal Chem (78):2093–2099.

Book excerpt: This book offers comprehensive information on the fundamentals and applications of ionic-liquid-based aqueous biphasic systems, which have predominantly (and successfully) been employed as alternative platforms for the extraction, separation and purification of diverse high-value products. The book consists of an initial introduction providing a brief overview, from fundamentals to applications, followed by nine chapters addressing the respective phase diagrams (interpretation and characterization) and remarkable examples of their applications. It also includes two final chapters focusing on recent developments in the search for more environmentally-benign and biocompatible ionic-liquid-based aqueous biphasic systems, and on the progress made to date concerning the recovery, recycling and reuse of the phase-forming components, the goal being the development of cost-effective and sustainable processes. The book offers an interesting and useful guide for a broad readership in the fields of green chemistry, biotechnology, chemical engineering, and biochemistry, among others. Mara G. Freire is a Coordinator Researcher at CICECO - Aveiro Institute of Materials, Chemistry Department, University of Aveiro, Portugal.
