Book excerpt: The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the employment outcomes for adult vocational rehabilitation clients with deaf-blindness. The researcher examined the relationships between case service provisions (any service provided during the entire client case, e.g., vocational guidance and counseling, job-placement assistance, rehabilitation technology) and competitive employment outcomes for individuals with deaf-blindness. The sample was obtained from Rehabilitation Services Administration Case Service Report (RSA911) data, and it included 135 cases of those with deaf-blindness identified as their primary or secondary disability whose case was closed during Fiscal Year 2016. The independent variables consisted of 14 vocational rehabilitation case service variables ((a) vocational rehabilitation counseling and guidance, (b) college or university training, (c) occupational or vocational training, (d) on-the-job training, (e) basic academic remedial or literacy training, (f) job-readiness training, (g) disability-related augmentative skills training, (h) miscellaneous training, (i) job-search assistance, (j) job-placement assistance, (k) transportation, (l) maintenance, (m) rehabilitation technology, and (n) reader services). The dependent variable was attainment of competitive employment. The results indicated that three vocational rehabilitation case service variables were found to be associated with clients with deaf-blindness obtaining competitive employment. Implications for improving employment outcomes for clients with deaf-blindness include supporting post-secondary educational attainment opportunities, providing job-placement services, and providing job search-related services. Implications for case services provided by vocational rehabilitation agencies are also discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a quarter of a century, Ildefonso, a Mexican Indian, lived in total isolation, set apart from the rest of the world. He wasn't a political prisoner or a social recluse, he was simply born deaf and had never been taught even the most basic language. Susan Schaller, then a twenty-four-year-old graduate student, encountered him in a class for the deaf where she had been sent as an interpreter and where he sat isolated, since he knew no sign language. She found him obviously intelligent and sharply observant but unable to communicate, and she felt compelled to bring him to a comprehension of words. The book vividly conveys the challenge, the frustrations, and the exhilaration of opening the mind of a congenitally deaf person to the concept of language. This second edition includes a new chapter and afterword.

Book excerpt: Finding a job, learning to live independently, and obtaining further education are important goals for all young adults as they leave high school. But achieving these goals is often extremely difficult for students who are deaf-blind. Limited or absent hearing and vision, difficulties with communication, and the frequent presence of additional disabilities make the transition from school to adult life very challenging. Extensive, thoughtful transition planning is essential. In this publication, the authors introduce three young adults--Noah, Laura, and Patrick. Their stories illustrate important components of transition goals and services and show how creative, individually tailored assessment and planning can be used to promote employment, further education, and independence. [This publication was prepared with contributions from Jackie Kenley, Patrick Vellia, and Shelly Voelker.].

Book excerpt: The incredible life story of Haben Girma, the first Deafblind graduate of Harvard Law School, and her amazing journey from isolation to the world stage. Haben grew up spending summers with her family in the enchanting Eritrean city of Asmara. There, she discovered courage as she faced off against a bull she couldn't see, and found in herself an abiding strength as she absorbed her parents' harrowing experiences during Eritrea's thirty-year war with Ethiopia. Their refugee story inspired her to embark on a quest for knowledge, traveling the world in search of the secret to belonging. She explored numerous fascinating places, including Mali, where she helped build a school under the scorching Saharan sun. Her many adventures over the years range from the hair-raising to the hilarious. Haben defines disability as an opportunity for innovation. She learned non-visual techniques for everything from dancing salsa to handling an electric saw. She developed a text-to-braille communication system that created an exciting new way to connect with people. Haben pioneered her way through obstacles, graduated from Harvard Law, and now uses her talents to advocate for people with disabilities. Haben takes readers through a thrilling game of blind hide-and-seek in Louisiana, a treacherous climb up an iceberg in Alaska, and a magical moment with President Obama at The White House. Warm, funny, thoughtful, and uplifting, this captivating memoir is a testament to one woman's determination to find the keys to connection.
