Book excerpt: The knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for success in today's workforce are evolving in response to continuing automation and computerization. The evolving labor market has challenged the efficacy of higher education institutions to prepare graduates for the workforce. Colleges and universities have instituted several strategies for successfully equipping graduates for the workforce; still, research has shown that many employers are dissatisfied with the "hard" and "soft" skills exhibited by recent college graduates in the workplace. This parallel convergent mixed-methods study was designed to explore the extent to which recent college graduates are prepared with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that current research indicates are essential for success in the workforce. This study reviewed numerous demographic variables associated with recent college graduates, as well as their perceptions of their own workforce readiness. Utilizing purposeful sampling to survey recent college graduates, surveys were designed to gain insight into the efficacy of respondents' undergraduate program of study to prepare respondents for the workforce. Additionally, nine semi-structured interviews with individuals who had at least two years of experience since 2015 managing or supervising recent college graduates at their place of employment were conducted. Interviews were conducted to gain insight into the extent to which employers considered recent college graduates prepared for the workforce. Maximal variation sampling was utilized to ensure the nine semi-structured interviewees were drawn from several different sectors or industries of the economy. The cross-sectional survey for the study fielded a total of five responses and provided very little insight into the study's research questions; therefore, qualitative semi-structured interviews were the sole source of data for analysis, findings, results, and interpretations. Three major themes and their respective subthemes emerged from the data: (1) Few relevant skill and attitudinal proficiencies were reported to exist in recent college graduates; (2) Several skill and attitudinal deficiencies were reported to exist among recent college graduates; and (3) Managerial considerations in the workplace, some unique to recent college graduates, existed. Two results emerged following data analysis: (1) Recent college graduates in the workplace do not fully exhibit the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that employers prefer; and (2) Upskilling recent college graduates for the workplace remains a task of employers, as institutions of higher education continue to produce graduates ill-prepared for the workforce.

Further research was required to discover insights to the workforce readiness gap. This concurrent mixed methods study explored what competencies influenced employer's perceptions of the work-readiness of Information Systems (ISYS) undergraduate students and discovered ISYS graduates' and current ISYS students' perceptions of their work-readiness. Participants consisted of a convenience sample including 69 ISYS program upperclassmen, 20 ISYS program alumni, and 8 employers of the ISYS program graduates. ISYS program alumni completed an online Qualtrics survey to measure the participants' perception of their workforce preparedness. ISYS program upperclassmen completed a similar paper-based survey to measure the students' current perception of their workforce readiness. Employers of ISYS program graduates were interviewed to determine (1) how they defined workforce readiness, (2) the competencies associated with being workforce-ready, and (3) the degree to which the Sam M. Walton College of Business graduates demonstrated workforce readiness. The instrument used in this study was adopted from the employer survey used in the Are They Really Ready to Work?: Employers' Perspectives on the Basic Knowledge and Applied Skills of New Entrants to the 21st Century U.S. Workforce report by Casner-Lotto, Barrington, & Wright (2006) and the Ill-Prepared U.S. Workforce: Exploring the Challenges of Employer-Provided Workforce Readiness Training report by Casner-Lotto, Rosenblum, & Wright (2009). The reports were produced by ASTD, The Conference Board, Corporate Voices for Working Families, Partnership for 21st Century Skills, and SHRM. Research findings demonstrated 91% of ISYS program alumni and 86.9% of upperclassmen believed they were adequately to well prepared for the workforce by the ISYS program. Additionally, 75% of ISYS graduates' employers felt the students were adequately to somewhat well prepared for the workforce. Workforce readiness skills measured in this study included English Language (spoken), Writing in English, Problem Solving, Critical Thinking, Collaboration/Working with Others, Computer/Technical, Project Management, Knowledge within Major, General Business Knowledge, Willingness to Learn, Ability to Learn, Responsibility/Dependability, Initiative, Attitude Toward Work, Attendance/Punctuality, and Other skills not mentioned.

Administrators, who recognize the need for studies that address the potential benefit experiential learning can provide students at two-year institutions, will gain insight from the employer and alumni respondents' perceptions of workforce preparedness. The purpose of the study was to understand how employed community colleges graduates who did or did not participate in internships while in college, and their current employers, perceived the extent of their workplace preparedness. Guided by Andrew and Brown’s social constructivist framework, which links the knowledge one obtains through social interactions, language and cultural experiences, the research focused on the learning one does and does not obtain through experiential learning experiences to prepare for the workforce. The explanatory case study design used semistructured interviews with seven community college alumni, as well as open-ended questionnaires sent to their current employers to follow up on employer perceptions about experiential learning and workforce preparedness. The results indicated a difference in the skill development strengths of those with experiential learning versus those without experiential learning. Pathways towards employability are influenced by the evolving trends in the job market. Due to the fact that experiential learning commonly comes out of career services, career services professionals can use employer and graduate perceptions of internships to shape the resources provided for students entering the workforce.

A skilled workforce is still dependent on the preparation that colleges offer their students. However, in today's rapidly-changing technological and global world, many businesses are finding that college graduates they hire are under-prepared to enter the workforce with the needed skill sets (Abernathy, 2014; McIntire & McLester, 2006; Needleman, 2014; Zeiss, 2005). They may be prepared academically, but may be lacking in soft skills, such as analytical reasoning, interpersonal skills, self-discipline, managing time, money, and resources, as well as communication and technology skills. This research study used survey research and quantitative methods to determine the differences between employer's perceptions of needed skill sets and college students' perceptions of acquired skill sets obtained during their studies. This correlational quantitative research study design identified nine skill sets obtained within the Employability Skills Framework (U.S. Department of Education, 2012) with 39 subscale identifying factors or skills. A sample of small, medium, and large corporations with offices in a large city in the United States was surveyed using a Likert scale to determine which skills identified within each set of skills were most needed in their organizations as they hire newly-graduated college students. A student survey was administrated at one large four-year public research university as they prepared to graduate and enter the workforce. The potential threats to validity and reliability included low-response rate, non-response, outliers, and adequate size of employer and student samples. The survey questionnaire provided the data needed to interpret the results. Survey results were collected via a web-based survey, SurveyGizmo, which exported data in SPSS format. All statistical analyses of the quantitative results were conducted with the help of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences software (IBM SPSS) Version 22. This study shed light upon the potential need for higher education administrators and employers to build meaningful partnerships for a mutual goal: to ensure that graduates possess the skill sets desired in the current workforce and beyond.

The research questions that guided the study were: 1) What skills and competencies do employers rate as Important for college graduates seeking employment? 2) What skills and competencies do employers rate as Satisfied with for college graduates seeking employment? A descriptive, quantitative research study was designed to describe the skills and competencies employers rated to be Important and Satisfied with when hiring college graduates. The participants included employers (N=50) who are regional chamber members in the Northeast. A questionnaire was used to collect data on employers’ ratings of skills and competencies based on Importance and Satisfaction. Analyses revealed that for skills and competencies Importance , 94% of employers rated Interpersonal Skills most Important, 16% of employers rated Global Business Economy Skills the least Important. Dimension level Importance, 78% of employers rated Communication Skills most Important, while 18% of employers rated Personality, Leadership Skills, and Teamwork the least Important skills and competencies for college graduates seeking employment. Additionally, 76% of the employers rated Technical/Computer Knowledge the highest level Satisfaction; 18% of employers rated Written Communications Skills the lowest level of Satisfaction, Dimension level Satisfaction, 80% of employers rated Career Preparation and Professional Readiness Skills first at a high level of Satisfaction, while 88% of employers rated Communications Skills with the lowest level of Satisfaction for college graduates seeking employment. The findings of this study could assist in updating current HEIs curriculum and course offerings. Moreover, it may stimulate conversation among employers, students, higher education administrators, and policymakers about ways to better incorporate employers and workforce needs with students' preparation before graduation.
