Book excerpt: This thesis is a research study in comparative marital adjustment of women who combine the wife-mother role with teaching, and home women who fulfill the single role of homemaker. Fifty married couples were utilized as the samples. Controls of the study included age range of the women, length of marriage, education, number of children, class status; and for the teachers, years of teaching experience. Home women were so classified if they had not been employed outside the home since the birth of their first child. The couples were matched for socio-economic status. Teacher participants were secured from four school systems located in the area. Home women participants were secured through the aid of the Family Life Department of the Board of Education of Kansas City, Missouri. Twenty-four of the participants furnished leads for the additional twenty-six couples who participated. The couples generally were contacted in their home situation. The wife was given a standardized marital adjustment test and each couple was given a standardized personality test to determine to what extent personality traits affect marital adjustment. Interviews were conducted to determine the couples attitudes towards the wife's role. Results of the study: After controlling the sample through age, education, length of marriage and other factors enumerated above, I directed my analysis at the personality traits of the two groups. The results of the personality tests evidenced that such traits as neurotic tendency, dominance-submission and self-sufficiency of the husband and wife did not differentiate the two role groups in marital adjustment. Having held personality traits contstant, I compared the two groups for role differential and the present writer concluded that the role of the wife in a marital situation does not in itself affect her marital adjustment. That is, whether the wife is employed outside the home or whether she fulfills the tradiitonal role of home woman, her marital adjustment is not significantly different as a result. Possible limitations of the study: The sample utilized was small and not selected at random. Also the actual validity of the testing instruments is not known.
