Book excerpt: This qualitative study examined special education emotional support teachers' perspectives regarding manifestations of social skills for emotional support students and how to teach specific social skills so that the student can be educated in the least restrictive environment. Two Intermediate Units serving both urban and rural districts in Pennsylvania participated in this study. This study included a researcher-developed survey, researcher-constructed Likert-scale and open-ended response questions, and researcher-designed interview questions. The study revealed that the most prevalent social skill deficit that manifests as maladaptive behavior that impedes the provision of Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) for emotional support students in lesser restrictive settings, as identified through participation perspective, are appropriate self-management and self-regulatory skills. The perception data suggests that emotional support teachers take into consideration varying site-specific factors when determining if school-wide positive behavior intervention supports (SWPBIS) or classroom-based systems are more effective for behavior management within the classroom; and, that more than eighty percent of the educators surveyed believed that relationship building was the most effective form of behavior management initiated by adults. The data was unable to disaggregate the most effective social skills curricula and suggested that peer-initiated input, mediation, and restorative consequences instead were the most effective positive influences on maladaptive negative student behavior.

Data were collected from four central Pennsylvania school districts utilizing an online survey with closed and open-ended responses, and interviews. Results suggested that social, emotional, and behavioral interventions had a positive impact on students in the school and classroom setting. Social and emotional interventions focused on relationships, including parent conferences, morning meetings, and staff mentors were identified as effective in producing a positive improvement in social engagement and management of emotions in the classroom and school setting. Behavioral interventions grounded in communication such as teachers communicating with parents, behavior charts, and student behavior plans were considered effective in improving student behavior in the classroom and school setting. Results of this study indicated that while schools and districts utilized a tiered intervention framework, the fidelity of the implementation and use of core components, including universal screeners and data-driven criteria for tier changes, was limited. An opportunity for future research could include investigating the perceptions of effectiveness of social, emotional, and behavioral intervention in schools and districts who consistently use universal screeners as part of their tiered intervention framework.

Book excerpt: Expulsion rates for children occur at a rate of 10 children per every 1,000 enrolled in center-based early learning programs. The inability of teachers to manage the challenging behaviors of children contributes to these rates. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to answer the research question that inquired how teachers’ perceptions of their own social emotional competence influenced their responses to children with challenging behaviors. The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning’s social emotional learning framework served as the foundation for the interview protocol questions. Data were gathered during semistructured interview from 6 teachers who met the participant criteria and analyzed using a thematic and inductive approach. The inclusion criteria included teachers with at least 1 year of experience working with children ages 2-5 years, and who have at least 12 units of early childhood education or a bachelor’s degree. Results indicated discrepancies in participants’ perceptions of their self-confidence with variances between their professional and personal lives. In their responses to the scenarios that illustrated challenging behaviors, participants emphasized the importance of respecting the rights of children and understanding the underlying factors that contributed to those behaviors. Findings suggest the need for a more hands-on approach to better support teachers’ efforts in managing challenging behaviors in children, which in turn can potentially reduce the number of preschool expulsions in center-based programs. Results promoted positive social change by extending our understanding of the influence of the teacher-child relationship on the behaviors of children, specifically challenging behaviors.

Book excerpt: This study was designed to assess the extent by which an evidence-based Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) program influenced teachers' perception of students' behavior in a small and diverse PK - 8 school district in Westchester County, NY. Specifically, the researcher evaluated the Anchors of Emotional Intelligence and the RULER framework to determine its impact on school climate as viewed from the perspective of staff in the district. Prior to commencing the study, the researcher recognized the negative staff narrative around student behavior in the district as a significant problem of practice that was observable, actionable and high leverage. This mixed-methods study utilized a school climate survey adapted from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) along with an SEL scale adopted from the RULER framework. The study, however, leaned heavily on the qualitative component, interviewing 11 tenured teachers in the district and analyzing this data with that obtained from both the school climate survey and SEL scale. As of the 2018-2019 school year, Pocantico Hills Central School District consisted of 322 students and 49 staff members. All staff completed the school climate survey. While the study found that the Anchors of Emotional Intelligence and its RULER framework was not shown to have a significant impact on improving student-behavior, staff perception was favorable, viewing its implementation as a needed resource to support teachers' ability to effectively understand and address challenging behavior. While staff did not report a significant change in students' behavior, there was a collective belief that behavior would improve with sustained commitment and fidelity of implementation. Additionally, further research on teachers Social-Emotional Competencies (SEC) was recommended.
