Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. The first full-length study of incest in the Gothic genre, this book argues that Gothic writers resisted the power structures of their society through incestuous desires. It provides interdisciplinary readings of incest within father-daughter, sibling, mother-son, cousin and uncle-niece relationships in texts by authors including Emily Brontë, Eliza Parsons, Ann Radcliffe and Eleanor Sleath. The analyses, underpinned by historical, literary and cultural contexts, reveal that the incest thematic allowed writers to explore a range of related sexual, social and legal concerns. Through representations of incest, Gothic writers modelled alternative agencies, sexualities and family structures that remain relevant today.

Book excerpt: In September 1909 Prime Minister Herbert Asquith came under attack during an event at Birmingham’s Bingley Hall. Members of the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) - or ‘suffragettes’ as the papers had named them - prevented from attending the meeting by a heavy police presence, threw roof slates at Asquith’s car to register their frustration. Ten women were arrested and imprisoned for their actions that day. This incident was one of many that marked the campaign for women’s suffrage in Birmingham and the West Midlands. Often overlooked compared to London or Manchester, the region was nonetheless an important hub of the suffrage movement, at the heart of both the constitutional campaign for reform and militant action by the suffragettes. It witnessed explosions, vandalism and arson, as well as university debates, rallies, and vigorous newspaper campaigns. It also had the tragic honour of being the first place where the policy of force-feeding hunger-striking suffragettes in prison was implemented. The part the city played in the fight for universal suffrage has been forgotten for too long. This book examines the suffrage campaign in Birmingham from its beginnings in the 19th century to the First World War, from both militant and constitutional perspectives, exploring the significant incidents that took place in the city and telling the stories of the women who campaigned relentlessly for their democratic right to vote.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive encyclopedia tracing the history of the women's rights movement in the United States from the American Revolution to the present day. Few realize that the origin of the discussion on women's rights emerged out of the anti-slavery movement of the 19th century, and that suffragists were active in the peace and labor movements long after the right to vote was granted. Thus began the confluence of activism in our country, where the rights of women both followed—and led—the social and political discourse in America. Through 4 volumes and more than 800 entries, editor Tiffany K. Wayne, with advising editor Lois Banner, examine the issues, people, and events of women's activism, from the early period of American history to the present time. This comprehensive reference not only traces the historical evolution of the movement, but also covers current issues affecting women, such as reproductive freedom, political participation, pay equity, violence against women, and gay civil rights.
