Book excerpt: Though the volume covers 22 papers by 36 authors from 12 countries, the history in the background is bound to Hungary where, in 1973 Andras Pn§kopa started to lay the foundation of a scientific forum, which can be a regular meeting spot for experts of the world in the field. Since then, there has been a constant interest in that forum. Headed at present by Tamas Rapcsak, the Laboratory of Operations Research and Decisions Systems of the Computer and Automation Institute, Hungarian Academy of Sciences followed the tradition in every respect, namely conferences were organized almost in every second year and in the same stimulating area, in the Matra mountains. The basic fields were kept, providing opportunities for the leading personalities to give voice to their latest results. The floor has been widened recently for the young generation, ensuring this way both a real location for the past, present and future experts to meet and also the possibility for them to make the multicoloured rainbow of the fields unbroken and continuous. The volume is devoted to the memory of Steven Vajda, one of the pioneers on mathematical programming, born is Hungary. In 1992 he took part in the XIth International Conference on Mathematical Programming at Matrafiired where, with his bright personality, he greatly contributed to the good spirituality of the event. We thank Jakob Krarup for his reminiscence on the life and scientific activities of late Steven Vajda.

Book excerpt: Interest has grown rapidly over the past dozen years in the application of object-oriented programming and methods to the development of distributed, open systems. This volume presents the proceedings of a workshop intended to assess the current state of research in this field and to facilitate interaction between groups working on very different aspects of object-oriented distributed systems. The workshop was held as part of the 1993 European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming (ECOOP '93). Over fifty people submitted position papers and participated in the workshop, and almost half presented papers. The presented papers were carefully reviewed and revised after the workshop, and 14 papers were selected for this volume.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the 10th ACIS International Conference on Software Engineering Artificial Intelligence, Networking and Parallel/Distributed Computing (SNPD rd 2009), held in Daegu, Korea on May 27–29, 2009, the 3 International Workshop st on e-Activity (IWEA 2009) and the 1 International Workshop on Enterprise Architecture Challenges and Responses (WEACR 2009) is to aim at bringing together researchers and scientist, businessmen and entrepreneurs, teachers and students to discuss the numerous fields of computer science, and to share ideas and information in a meaningful way. Our conference officers selected the best 24 papers from those papers accepted for presentation at the conference in order to publish them in this volume. The papers were chosen based on review scores submitted by members of the program committee, and underwent further rounds of rigorous review. In chapter 1, Igor Crk and Chris Gniady propose a network-aware energy m- agement mechanism that provides a low-cost solution that can significantly reduce energy consumption in the entire system while maintaining responsiveness of local interactive workloads. Their dynamic mechanisms reduce the decision delay before the disk is spun-up, reduce the number of erroneous spin-ups in local wo- stations, decrease the network bandwidth, and reduce the energy consumption of individual drives. In chapter 2, Yoshihito Saito and Tokuro Matsuo describe a task allocation mechanism and its performance concerning with software developing. They run simulations and discuss the results in terms of effective strategies of task allocation.

In the first part, a novel computation model, called the multi-Pandora model, which is designed on the basis of the Pandora model, is presented. In the second part, the distributed implementation schemes for Parlog, Pandora, and multi-Pandora are presented. Finally, the author presents the distributed constraint solvers for finite domain constraints, as well as the distributed constraint solvers in the domains of real numbers and Boolean rings which can be incorporated into the schemes presented in the second part to handle the ?ask?- and ?tell?-constraints.

Book excerpt: The interplay of artificial intelligence and software engineering has been an interesting and an active area in research institution and industry. This book covers the state of the art in the use of knowledge-based approaches for software specification, design, implementation, testing and debugging. Starting with an introduction to various software engineering paradigms and knowledge-based software systems, the book continues with the discussion of using hybrid knowledge representation as a basis to specify software requirements, to facilitate specification analysis and transformation of real-time distributed software systems. A formal requirements specification language using non-monotonic logic, temporal logic, frames and production systems for new software engineering paradigms (such as rapid prototyping, operational specification and transformational implementation) is also discussed in detail. Examples from switching and other applications are used to illustrate the requirements language. Finally, the development, specification and verification of knowledge-based systems are investigated.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers selected for presentation at the Third Inter- tional Conference on Rough Sets and Current Trends in Computing (RSCTC 2002) held at Penn State Great Valley, Malvern, Pennsylvania, U.S.A., 14–16 October 2002. Rough set theoryand its applications constitute a branch of soft computing that has exhibited a signi?cant growth rate during recent years. RSCTC 2002 provided a forum for exchanging ideas among manyresearchers in the rough set communityand in various areas of soft computing and served as a stimulus for mutual understanding and cooperation. In recent years, there have been a number of advances in rough set theoryand applications. Hence, we have witnessed a growing number of international workshops on rough sets and their applications. In addition, it should be observed that one of the beauties of rough sets and the rough set philosophyis that it tends to complement and reinforce research in manytraditional research areas and applications. This is the main reason that manyinternational conferences are now including rough sets into the list of topics.

Book excerpt: The integration of applied intelligence with software has been an essential enabler for science and the new economy, creating new possibilities for a more reliable, flexible and robust society. But current software methodologies, tools, and techniques often fall short of expectations, and are not yet sufficiently robust or reliable for a constantly changing and evolving market. This book presents the proceedings of SoMeT_22, the 21st International Conference on New Trends in Intelligent Software Methodology Tools, and Techniques, held from 20 - 22 September 2022 in Kitakyushu, Japan. The SoMeT conference provides a platform for the exchange of ideas and experience in the field of software technology, with the emphasis on human-centric software methodologies, end-user development techniques, and emotional reasoning for optimal performance. The 58 papers presented here were each carefully reviewed by 3 or 4 referees for technical soundness, relevance, originality, significance and clarity, they were then revised before being selected by the international reviewing committee. The papers are arranged in 9 chapters: software systems with intelligent design; software systems security and techniques; formal techniques for system software and quality assessment; applied intelligence in software; intelligent decision support systems; cyber-physical systems; knowledge science and intelligent computing; ontology in data and software; and machine learning in systems software. The book assembles the work of scholars from the international research community to capture the essence of the new state-of-the-art in software science and its supporting technology, and will be of interest to all those working in the field.
