Book excerpt: "The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic marks the most significant, singular global disruption since World War II, with health, economic, political, and security implications that will ripple for years to come." -Global Trends 2040 (2021) Global Trends 2040-A More Contested World (2021), released by the US National Intelligence Council, is the latest report in its series of reports starting in 1997 about megatrends and the world's future. This report, strongly influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, paints a bleak picture of the future and describes a contested, fragmented and turbulent world. It specifically discusses the four main trends that will shape tomorrow's world: - Demographics-by 2040, 1.4 billion people will be added mostly in Africa and South Asia. - Economics-increased government debt and concentrated economic power will escalate problems for the poor and middleclass. - Climate-a hotter world will increase water, food, and health insecurity. - Technology-the emergence of new technologies could both solve and cause problems for human life. Students of trends, policymakers, entrepreneurs, academics, journalists and anyone eager for a glimpse into the next decades, will find this report, with colored graphs, essential reading.

Its major aim is to serve as a compendium which touches different major aspects of NPE as it has been observed that earlier works in this area have focused only on one aspect or the other. It will offer a broad survey of the form and functions of Nigerian Pidgin (NP) in different domains. The book promises to investigate the use of NP in such domains as popular culture, advertisement, social media and online discussion fora. One major strong point of this volume is the fact that it will direct attention to different fertile areas of NP by focusing, inter alia, on its social functions, its morphology and syntax, its regional varieties, its (possible) use as a viable medium of instruction in school, the changing attitudes of people towards its use, the place of NP in relation to language planning and policy in Nigeria as well as sociolinguistic variation within NP. The book will make a significant contribution to the existing literature on NP as, unlike earlier studies in this area, it will explore the grammatical, sociolinguistic and perceptual aspects of the language. By bringing together the expertise of renowned Nigerian and international scholars who have conducted research in this area, the volume will be an essential resource for researchers, graduate and undergraduate students interested not only in Nigerian Pidgin but also on contact linguistics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2015, Nigeria's voters cast out the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP). Here, A. Carl LeVan traces the political vulnerability of Africa's largest party in the face of elite bargains that facilitated a democratic transition in 1999. These 'pacts' enabled electoral competition but ultimately undermined the party's coherence. LeVan also crucially examines the four critical barriers to Nigeria's democratic consolidation: the terrorism of Boko Haram in the northeast, threats of Igbo secession in the southeast, lingering ethnic resentments and rebellions in the Niger Delta, and farmer-pastoralist conflicts. While the PDP unsuccessfully stoked fears about the opposition's ability to stop Boko Haram's terrorism, the opposition built a winning electoral coalition on economic growth, anti-corruption, and electoral integrity. Drawing on extensive interviews with a number of politicians and generals and civilians and voters, he argues that electoral accountability is essential but insufficient for resolving the representational, distributional, and cultural components of these challenges.

Book excerpt: This important report, Global Trends 2030-Alternative Worlds, released in 2012 by the U.S. National Intelligence Council, describes megatrends and potential game changers for the next decades. Among the megatrends, it analyzes: - increased individual empowerment - the diffusion of power among states and the ascent of a networked multi-polar world - a world's population growing to 8.3 billion people, of which sixty percent will live in urbanized areas, and surging cross-border migration - expanding demand for food, water, and energy It furthermore describes potential game changers, including: - a global economy that could thrive or collapse - increased global insecurity due to regional instability in the Middle East and South Asia - new technologies that could solve the problems caused by the megatrends - the possibility, but by no means the certainty, that the U.S. with new partners will reinvent the international system Students of trends, forward-looking entrepreneurs, academics, journalists and anyone eager for a glimpse into the next decades will find this essential reading.

This book is written to suggest ways on how to improve architectural education and a comparative study was done between Nigeria and India. The book examines the current issues in architectural education in both countries and the way forward. Solutions to the current problems encountered by the governing architectural education authorities in both countries are carefully highlighted after a research was done. The quality of architectural education should have direct impact on the architectural product of that society. The architectural education of any nation should be a weapon for physical development. Architectural education and practice are experiencing a shift of Interdisciplinary characterized by the coordinating, articulating and dominant role of digital technologies; therefore there is a need to upgrade the curriculum in order to fit into the current technological system. According to the most influential architectural professional body in the world, Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), the education review group representing academia and practice, intends to catalyse relevant new models for architectural education to be taken forward and established by schools of architecture. This will help to push architectural education to the next level by setting a target to meet with the current societal challenges. It is an important thing for any nation to make changes to architectural education as time goes on to avoid risk of becoming irrelevant. This book is an attempt to identify the challenges in administrating and delivery of architectural education and appraise the efforts of the concerned bodies to address them.

This book was released on 2023-08-01 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 20th century, when modern democracies gained more strength, governments have carried out their internal and foreign affairs policies with society's approval. For that reason, all organizations that want to influence governments try to gain a reputation in the eyes of the public. Similarly, states also attempt to build a reputation and trust in the public opinion of a target country or within particular target communities through public diplomacy activities. It is seen that remarkable public diplomacy studies and works have been carried out for more than half a century, and the field has advanced. However, the public diplomacy literature is mainly USA-dominated due to its pioneering role in the emergence of the concept and its institutionalization. Public diplomacy perceptions and practices in other countries also develop under the influence of this experience. With this effect, each country determines its practice areas and actors for public diplomacy considering its power, sphere of influence, opportunities, and risks. Global Perspectives on the Emerging Trends in Public Diplomacy offers insights into the approaches taken by countries in different geographies and how they tailor their public diplomacy activities based on their unique opportunities and risks. By examining the practices of various countries, this book provides a global picture of public diplomacy activities and identifies emerging trends shaping the field. This book is essential for researchers, academicians, undergraduate and postgraduate students, and non-government and government organizations looking to enhance their understanding of public diplomacy. The diverse range of perspectives offered in this book will enable readers to understand how different countries approach public diplomacy and how these activities are evolving in the current global landscape.
