Book excerpt: The primary objectives of this report were the following: (1) to evaluate the suitability of commercial wireless technology (products, services, waveforms and protocols, components, and standards) for Army tactical applications, (2) to recommend areas where Army 6.1/6.2 research funding might yield solutions to wireless communications problems that are of particular concern for the military and thus unlikely to be addressed by industry-funded research, and (3) to explain the competing factors (tradeoffs) that must be weighed when selecting between alternative systems or technological solutions, and to suggest a general methodology for understanding these tradeoffs.

Book excerpt: The U.S. Army, as well as the other services, is moving in the direction of greater use of commercial technology and standards. The principal motivation for this change is the desire to reduce costs. However, increased interoperability is another potential benefit. This report evaluates commercial wireless communications technology, including components and subsystems, physical layer standards (waveforms and signal processing), protocol standards, and products and services. The author attempts to assess the suitability of these commercial technologies for Army tactical applications and to suggest the appropriate mix of commercial, military-unique, and military variants of commercial systems for use on the digital battlefield. The author recommends specific Army research and development areas where progress is needed in order to address voids between military requirements and currently available and emerging technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional tactical communications systems consist of a number of separate subsystems with little interworking between them and with external sensors and weapons systems. Combat net radio (CNR) has provided the high-mobility communications required by combat troops, while trunk communications systems have provided high-capacity communications between headquarters at the expense of mobility. The focus of this book is on new, information-age technologies that promise to offer seamless integration of real-time data sharing, creating a single logical network architecture to facilitate the movement of data throughout the battlespace. Because the structure of this network is constrained by the fundamental trade-off between range, mobility and capacity that applies to all communications systems, this network is unlikely to be based on a single network technology. This book presents an architecture for this network, and shows how its subsystems can be integrated to form a single logical network.

Book excerpt: In response to a request from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the committee studied a range of issues to help identify what strategies the Department of Defense might follow to meet its need for flexible, rapidly deployable communications systems. Taking into account the military's particular requirements for security, interoperability, and other capabilities as well as the extent to which commercial technology development can be expected to support these and related needs, the book recommends systems and component research as well as organizational changes to help the DOD field state-of-the-art, cost-effective untethered communications systems. In addition to advising DARPA on where its investment in information technology for mobile wireless communications systems can have the greatest impact, the book explores the evolution of wireless technology, the often fruitful synergy between commercial and military research and development efforts, and the technical challenges still to be overcome in making the dream of "anytime, anywhere" communications a reality.

The present document presents for each technology architecture, security, QoS, performance and frequency aspects. As a reference document it not only discusses technology, but also positions it in the context of the relevant operational deployment. For that reason, the document will be able to take as a starting point the classification of the operational use of COTS systems, made by the SCI-107 WG."--Introductory screen.

This book was released on 2019-02-08 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The region of South East Europe (SEE), which is home to both NATO and Partnership for Peace (PfP) countries, serves as an important corridor between Europe and the Middle East, North Africa, and the Caucasus. In recent years, however, SEE has also experienced high levels of cross-border, military and defense-related challenges in the form of migration, smuggling, terrorism, and cyber threats. Furthermore, the use of the new information environment (IE) to further extremism in SEE and elsewhere in NATO and PfP countries has had far-reaching command and control (C2) implications for the Alliance. A collaborative interdisciplinary, international and regional approach is clearly needed to adequately assess and address these hybrid threats. This book presents papers delivered at the NATO Science for Peace and Security (SPS) event: “Senior Leadership Roundtable on Military and Defense Aspects of Border Security in South East Europe”, held in Berovo, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia* from 23-30 September 2017. The aim of this special SPS grant was to maximize opportunities for extensive dialogue and collaboration between senior regional members, and the almost 70 distinguished academic and legal experts, as well as current or former senior-level practitioners from various governments, NATO bodies, and international organization that participated. It was the first SPS event of its kind in SEE as well as the first NATO SPS grant to be co-executed by the U.S. Department of Defense via the U.S. National Defense University. Other co-organizers were the C4I and Cyber Center of Excellence at George Mason University and PfP partner institution, the General Mihailo Apostolski Military Academy – Skopje, Associate Member of the University of Goce Delčev – Stip. The book is divided into five parts: global trends, defining the problem, policy and academic solutions, national and regional case studies, and technological solutions. It will prove an invaluable source of reference for all those with an interest in the SEE region as well as cross-border hybrid threats, in general. * Turkey recognizes the Republic of Macedonia with its constitutional name.
