Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do your company and employees have the necessary "IQ" not only to withstand a crisis but also come through it with strength and confidence? Like many companies over the last few years, yours has probably done a great deal to reassess its physical, strategic, and financial vulnerabilities. However, there is a huge difference between business continuity planning and true crisis management. Ian Mitroff outlines seven distinct competencies your organization needs to handle crises effectively: Right Heart (emotional IQ): By accepting crisis as an inevitability, you can process much of the shock and grief beforehand, and avoid making the effects of the crisis even worse through an unconstructive response. Right Thinking (creative IQ): "Crises don’t care about the ways in which we have organized the world," so out-of-the-box thinking is essential. Right Social and Political IQ: Understand that your business is subject not only to the pitfalls of its industry, but to the universal and complex challenges that threaten all companies. Right Integration (integrative IQ): Realize that crises are perceived differently by different stakeholders, and are never simple "exercises" that can be "solved." Identify and reconcile these perceptions now so that the path is clear when the crisis strikes. Right Technical IQ: "Think like a controlled paranoid" to uncover ways in which malicious forces could cause a crisis in your company. Question every assumption about what is "normal," "impossible," or "absurd." Right Aesthetic IQ: Reconsider the classic design of the corporation, which is meant to address problems as they arise, and move toward one in which crisis management is an overarching discipline on a par with, for example, finance. Spiritual IQ: Reject the notion that people’s physical, mental, and spiritual beings are completely separate; and establish ahead of time why our work is, and must remain, important to us on many different levels. Although crisis management has taken on new urgency in recent turbulent times, the need for careful planning did not originate on September 11, 2001. Mitroff’s examples, drawn from interviews conducted both before and after the 2001 attacks during his 25 years of experience, demonstrate the need for action -- and offer a blueprint for taking it.

Book excerpt: Discover how the crisis of a global pandemic allowed educators to improve learning across the pre-K–adult pipeline. While acknowledging the scale of loss and difficulty the COVID pandemic engendered within the field of education, this book focuses on how sudden and forced changes to teaching and learning created “Pandemic Positives,” which can be captured and brought to scale. In particular: Part I addresses how Pandemic Positives came into being, with special attention to the presence of educator hope and creativity. Part II explores the Pandemic Positives that arose in three settings: when schools were closed, when learning turned online, and when schools re-opened. Part III provides strategies for replicating the Pandemic Positives so they become positive educational game changers. This book is grounded on trauma and mental wellness theory and includes the in-the-trenches experiences and voices of educators. The text features art created by the coauthors and shares both their professional and personal experiences, humanizing and enriching the book. Mending Education completes a trilogy composed of Breakaway Learners and Trauma Doesn’t Stop at the School Door by Karen Gross. “We have all bemoaned the COVID pandemic and its lasting negative effects, but Karen Gross and Edward Wang turn that pessimism on its head. Their extensive experience in education is augmented by the priceless data gathered through their research survey of teachers and educators. This is a must-have for educators everywhere.” —Chris Messina-Boyer, educational crisis manager/crisis communications consultant, 20Buttonwood PR Solutions LLC

Book excerpt: Business on a Mission is a simple to follow guide for how organisations can adapt to the changing world and evolving expectations of stakeholders to build more purpose-led, sustainable businesses. It features proven models and case study examples of how to create a brand that talks to the emerging Gen Z consumer base; how to use social missions to drive sales in retail and with B2B customers; how to preserve reputation and licence to operate by working in partnership with not-for-profit organisations; and how to attract and retain the best talent by demonstrating a genuine social purpose. As well as clear, applicable models and behind-the-scenes descriptions of how successful campaigns were built and sustainable change made, this book features candid interviews with change makers from the worlds of retail, professional services, consumer goods, and NGOs. This second edition looks at how businesses and brands like Dove are now linking social and environmental goals, with an exclusive interview with Unilever CEO, Alan Jope. It explores how investors are now driving a systemic change in focus in the boardroom towards the sustainability agenda, and how leaders can respond to this, featuring a new interview with Frank Cooper, Global Chief Marketing Officer and member of the Global Executive Committee at BlackRock. The impact of the pandemic on what it means to be a sustainable brand, including a focus on sustainable supply chains, the growing power of Gen Z, the growth of online purchasing, multi-stakeholder partnerships, increased regulation, and culture at work, is also explored. This book has been read, enjoyed, and used by business leaders to identify models for change; by managers to create progressive campaigns; by NGOs to create stronger partnerships with the private sector; and by students to learn how theories of social purpose and sustainability can be applied in the real world. The first edition was Bronze winner of the AXIOM Business Book Award in the category of Philanthropy, Non-Profit, Sustainability.

Book excerpt: This handbook maps and analyzes cross-sector (public–corporate–social–community–faith) governance theories, models, and practices as they are evolving in a digital world. It studies human, cultural, societal, institutional interactions and challenges in a digitally enabled world, especially in the context of post-crisis resilience and agility. Every global crisis forces societies and nations to realign while addressing deeper structural and cultural issues in governance. The Covid-19 pandemic has necessitated swift local-to-global governance responses for timely digital innovations for health crisis interventions, economic recovery, and societal equity. While every nation-state is developing global pandemic responses in a digitally enabled world, the deeper crisis of human, institutional, and societal governance deficit is also evident. This handbook documents digital governance innovations that enhance stakeholder engagement and inclusion for resilient, accountable, and effective governance across sectors. This volume reflects on a range of theoretical frameworks adapted for understanding global and digital governance. It looks at international governance collaborations; corporate governance reform; education governance innovations; public sector and urban governance; health system governance, sustainability, and environmental governance; community and faith-based governance; and digital, cultural, and creativity governance. This book is unique, as it presents important work on post Covid-19 digital and democratic governance and brings together holistic—interdisciplinary and intersectoral— perspectives from the Global North and Global South, engaging the leading scholars, practitioners, businesses, and civil society. It will be of interest to multi-sector institutions and global audiences: governments, corporates, social sector institutions, digital entrepreneurs, students and researchers, academic professionals, policy-makers, public and private sector institutional leaders, and organizational and entrepreneurial innovators interested in the field of governance.

It provides a compelling antidote to the managerial focus of theory and practice in public administration. Written with the aim of inspiring and rekindling a mission for public service, Transformational Public Service weaves together theory and stories from actual practice to show that public service can (and does) advance the goals of democracy, inclusiveness, and social and economic justice. Eight practitioners from government and non-governmental organizations at all levels - from the street to the executive office - tell their personal stories of transformational public service. Theory, poetry, and popular culture references are woven around the stories. Both students and practitioners will discover new ways of thinking in this book that will enable them to transform their own administrative practices. As the authors note in their prologue: "As we listened to these stories, we heard people say that public service can be and is transformational (transforms institutions, practices, and people's lives and experiences) in ways that serve democracy, engagement, and social and economic justice. The public service they practice is collaborative, humanistic, emancipatory, inclusive, and diverse."

In the downward slope of the pandemic, large percentages of the world’s population are without work, and many are still in isolation and social distancing for biosafety and health. If it is true that crisis brings out opportunities, then this is a highly opportune moment for humanity to redefine and move forward. Career Re-Invention in the Post-Pandemic Era explores how people in their respective localities are adapting for a new economy through new understandings of the world and concomitant reconceptualizations of the self. This work addresses how people are thinking of the present and the near-future, how people are surviving the present moment of sparsity and shortages, and how people are retooling themselves to adapt to a new economy. Covering topics such as digital skills, K-12 education, and entrepreneurship, this book is an essential resource for faculty of higher education, K-12 administrators, government officials, business leaders, entrepreneurs, sociologists, economists, researchers, and academicians.

Book excerpt: The journey towards the future of work was greatly accelerated due to the COVID pandemic. Some changes have altered the functioning of the business world forever. Against the backdrop of these alterations, variations, and modifications, this book presents and analyzes three crucial factors: work, workforce, and workplace and their transformation into new-age organizations for meeting its customer expectations and long-term strategic goals. Companies must focus on ways of deployment of policies and practices that meet the business needs from the perspective of external changes. To achieve this goal, the organizations must realign their stakeholders and indulge in critical thinking by looking deeply into factors responsible for bringing about this transformational change. Re-envisioning is the current critical need for organizations to thrive; they must incorporate best practices to beat the competition and add value to their existing HR processes. This book clearly presents the practices and policies of successful organizations through the contribution of industry leaders. This book helps you understand the dynamism of work, workforce, and workplace that exist in organizations (as well as the challenges these organizations face) and their impact on business practices. The authors cover these broad areas because of the need to diversify and promote organic inclusive growth. Essentially, re-envisioning our organizations is the new normal. Organizations must leave the shackles of what might have been and look to what they can be. Stakeholders, employees, and the environment have been drastically altered, and organizations must change accordingly to survive. What now matters is how much an organization re-envisions itself and how it deals with all that is happening.
