Book excerpt: An all-in-one resource for designing and implementing embedded control in mobile robotics In Embedded Control for Mobile Robotic Applications, a distinguished trio of researchers delivers an authoritative and fulsome resource for understanding embedded control and robotics. The book includes coverage of a variety of embedded platforms, their use in controller implementation, stability analyses of designed controllers, and two new approaches for designing embedded controllers. The authors offer a full chapter on Field-Programmable-Gate-Array (FPGA) architecture development for controller design that is perfect for both practitioners and students taking robotics courses and provide a companion website that includes MATLAB codes for simulation and embedded platform-specific code for mobile robotic applications (in Embedded C and Verilog). The two approaches discussed by the authors—the top-down methodology and the bottom-up methodology—are of immediate practical utility to both practicing professionals in the field and students studying control applications and mobile robotics. The book also offers: A thorough introduction to embedded control, including processor, IC, and design technology, as well as a discussion of limitations in embedded control design Comprehensive explorations of the bottom-up and top-down methods, including computations using CORDIC, interval arithmetic, sliding surface design, and switched nonlinear systems Practical discussions of generic FPGA architecture design, including Verilog, PID controllers, DC motors and Encoder, and a systematic approach for designing architecture using FSMD In-depth examinations of discrete-time controller design, including the approximation to discrete-time transfer function and embedded implementation stability Perfect for practitioners working in embedded control design and control applications in robotics, Embedded Control for Mobile Robotic Applications will also earn a place in the libraries of academicians, researchers, senior undergraduate students, and graduate students in these fields.

Book excerpt: Introduction The Robot of tomorrow will be the effective result of the research work of today. Robotics advancement is going on in almost all technological areas. Especially for mobile robots, a similar trend is happening for computer systems, the transition from mainframe computing via workstations to PCs, which will probably continue with handheld devices for many applications. In the past, mobile robots were controlled by heavy, large, and expensive computer systems that could not be carried and had to be linked via cable or wireless devices. Today, however, we can build small mobile robots with numerous actuators and sensors that are controlled by inexpensive, small, and light embedded computer systems that are carried on-board the robot. There has been a tremendous increase of interest in mobile robots. Not just as interesting toys or inspired by science fiction stories or movies, but as a perfect tool for engineering education, mobile robots are used today at almost all universities in undergraduate and graduate courses in Computer Science/Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Cybernetics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Science and Mechatronics. A robot is a tangible, self-contained piece of real-world hardware. Tasks to be solved involving a robot are of a practical nature and directly make sense to the user. All problems involving real-world hardware such as a robot are in many ways harder than solving a theoretical problem. The perfect world which often is the realm of pure software systems does not exist here. Any actuator can only be positioned to a certain degree of accuracy, and all sensors have intrinsic reading errors and certain limitations. Therefore, a working robot program will be much more than just a logic solution coded in software. It will be a robust system that takes into account and overcomes inaccuracies and imperfections. Mobile robot programming is enjoyable and an inspiration. The fact that there is a moving system whose behavior can be specified by a piece of software is a challenge,

Book excerpt: Rapid prototyping (RP) technology has been widely known and appreciated due to its flexible and customized manufacturing capabilities. The widely studied RP techniques include stereolithography apparatus (SLA), selective laser sintering (SLS), three-dimensional printing (3DP), fused deposition modeling (FDM), 3D plotting, solid ground curing (SGC), multiphase jet solidification (MJS), laminated object manufacturing (LOM). Different techniques are associated with different materials and/or processing principles and thus are devoted to specific applications. RP technology has no longer been only for prototype building rather has been extended for real industrial manufacturing solutions. Today, the RP technology has contributed to almost all engineering areas that include mechanical, materials, industrial, aerospace, electrical and most recently biomedical engineering. This book aims to present the advanced development of RP technologies in various engineering areas as the solutions to the real world engineering problems.

Book excerpt: This book describes the design, mathematical modeling, control system development and experimental validation of a versatile mobile pipe inspection robot. It also discusses a versatile robotic system for pipeline inspection, together with an original, adaptable tracked mobile robot featuring a patented motion unit. Pipeline inspection is a common field of application for mobile robots because the monitoring of inaccessible, long and narrow pipelines is a very difficult task for humans. The main design objective is to minimize the number of robots needed to inspect different types of horizontal and vertical pipelines, with both smooth and rough surfaces. The book includes extensive information on the various design phases, mathematical modeling, simulations and control system development. In closing, the prototype construction process and testing procedures are presented and supplemented with laboratory and field experiments.
