The measurement of time is subject to Atouh, the god of magic and ceremonial order. For many years, there has been no king for the Silvan Elves, and the gates to the Otherworld are locked. The son of the last leader, Gandolin, is approaching his coronation ceremony, but he guards a secret that is unknown even to his closest confidants. Even to Madinan, his childhood friend and closest companion. Madinan is not an elf, and her origins are a mystery that grievously haunts her, prompting her to venture out into the surrounding lands in search of her roots. To the borders of Gwanfaar, where gloomy shadows lurk and a sinister threat grows strong. Can Gandolin survive the daunting tests of higher powers and become his people's long-awaited ruler? It remains to be seen whether the elves will be able to stand against the greedy power in the west - but they are dependent on Madinan's help. Shortly before Gandolin's inauguration rituals, she disappears without a trace. Everything suddenly seems in question and a happy ending is doubtful...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many readers drawn into the heroic tales of J. R. R. Tolkien's imaginary world of Middle-earth have given little conscious thought to the importance of the land itself in his stories or to the vital roles played by the flora and fauna of that land. As a result, The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion are rarely considered to be works of environmental literature or mentioned together with such authors as John Muir, Rachel Carson, or Aldo Leopold. Tolkien's works do not express an activist agenda; instead, his environmentalism is expressed in the form of literary fiction. Nonetheless, Tolkien's vision of nature is as passionate and has had as profound an influence on his readers as that of many contemporary environmental writers. The burgeoning field of agrarianism provides new insights into Tolkien's view of the natural world and environmental responsibility. In Ents, Elves, and Eriador, Matthew Dickerson and Jonathan Evans show how Tolkien anticipated some of the tenets of modern environmentalism in the imagined world of Middle-earth and the races with which it is peopled. The philosophical foundations that define Tolkien's environmentalism, as well as the practical outworking of these philosophies, are found throughout his work. Agrarianism is evident in the pastoral lifestyle and sustainable agriculture of the Hobbits, as they harmoniously cultivate the land for food and goods. The Elves practice aesthetic, sustainable horticulture as they shape their forest environs into an elaborate garden. To complete Tolkien's vision, the Ents of Fangorn Forest represent what Dickerson and Evans label feraculture, which seeks to preserve wilderness in its natural form. Unlike the Entwives, who are described as cultivating food in tame gardens, the Ents risk eventual extinction for their beliefs. These ecological philosophies reflect an aspect of Christian stewardship rooted in Tolkien's Catholic faith. Dickerson and Evans define it as "stewardship of the kind modeled by Gandalf," a stewardship that nurtures the land rather than exploiting its life-sustaining capacities to the point of exhaustion. Gandalfian stewardship is at odds with the forces of greed exemplified by Sauron and Saruman, who, with their lust for power, ruin the land they inhabit, serving as a dire warning of what comes to pass when stewardly care is corrupted or ignored. Dickerson and Evans examine Tolkien's major works as well as his lesser-known stories and essays, comparing his writing to that of the most important naturalists of the past century. A vital contribution to environmental literature and an essential addition to Tolkien scholarship, Ents, Elves, and Eriador offers both Tolkien fans and environmentalists an understanding of Middle-earth that has profound implications for environmental stewardship in the present and the future of our own world.

Book excerpt: Steve has spent over 10 years researching the settings Professor Tolkien turned from reality in the Cotswold shires into fantasy fiction. It is the reversal of the map from Oxfordshire through to the Severn Estuary that serves as the true inspiration for the Shire in these well known and much acclaimed works, translated into virtually every language worldwide. The Lord of the Rings is the best selling book of the 20th century. By reversing the Map of the Shire and looking at it back to front, Steve has identified the Cotswolds and many other parts of the Four Shires (Worcester-, Gloucester-, Oxford-, Warwick- shire) comprising the Shire in the legendary story. These four are marked on the stone very near to Bree (Moreton-in-Marsh), used by Professor J.R.R. Tolkien as his model for the Three Farthings Stone in The Lord of the Rings. Apart from the countless secrets of geography hidden in the epic story, there are allusions, never revealed before this brand new perspective, to personalities contemporary with Professor Tolkien’s writings: from Churchill(at The Yale and Brandy Hall, otherwise Blenheim Palace) to the notorious Mitford sisters (at Stock, otherwise Swinbrook) to Oswald Mosley(at Crickhollow, otherwise Wootton-headed) and to Vita Sackville-West (of the High Hay hedge) . . . to the Professor’s true-life role model for Aragorn, Roy Campbell, a much admired poet of the day . . . such that in many ways the Lord of the Rings may be read as a parody of England in the 1930’s and the War years . . . The backdrop to Steve’s work is the sometimes chivalric language of a number of the classic romantic poets (Tennyson, Wordsworth, Shelley, Keats and Coleridge), poets local to the Shire( Houseman, Shaw, Auden) as well as favourite contemporary lyricists, which means Dylan. There is also a lively dialogue between Gollum and Smeagol, meant to lighten the load on an arduous quest. Cotswold places under review (but with many, many more) include Chipping Norton (Hobbiton), The Bywater Pool (a relic of the Seventeenth Century), The Rollright Stones (Barrow Downs), Moreton in Marsh (Bree), Meon Hill (Weathertop), Bredon Hill (The Trollshaws with Bert, Tom, and William the stone trolls), Upton on Severn (The Ford) and the Malvern Hills (The Misty Mountains), with Great Malvern very clearly mapped for Rivendell. Over the Welsh border, Steve foresees the Wye Valley about Tintern Abbey for Lothlorien and The Forest of Dean for Fangorn Forest. Steve's journey may eventually extend down into Continental Europe, through Northern France (via Cair Andros, Paris), over the Pyrenees (Ered Nimrais) and through Minas Tirith (Rome), onwards Mordor . . . where lie the shadows . . . in Germany. 'The Lord of the Rings' is of course a fundamentally religious and Catholic work; . . . the religious element is absorbed into the story and symbolism.' (Letters, J.R.R. Tolkien) The Author makes some attempt to explain what Professor Tolkien may have meant, with special reference to Providence; but the Author also dabbles in Witchcraft. * The Author offers the assurance that, at least on Mother-earth, we may all know the way a little better following ‘The Secret Shire of Cotswold.’

For as long as men and women have pondered the mysteries of their existence, they have answered their own questions with stories of gods and goddesses. Belief in these deities shaped whole civilizations, yet today many of their names and images lie buried. The Encyclopedia of Ancient Deities makes those names available to the general reader as well as the scholar. This reference work lists all the known gods through recorded history. Alphabetically arranged entries provide the name of each deity (with alternate spellings), as well as notes on names that may be linguistically or functionally related. The tribe or culture that worshiped the deity is identified, and the god's origins and functions are explained. An extensive bibliography provides opportunities for further research and an exhaustive index provides access to the entries through virtually all names, forms and kinds of deities.

Book excerpt: In The Moon David Whitehouse explains how our nearest celestial neighbor was created (and what moonrocks tell us of its earth-shattering origins), and how its existence may have been a crucial factor in mankind being here at all. Whitehouse discusses how man has related to it, worshipped it and blamed it for his own 'lunacy' - though can it really affect our behavior? He tells how the first person to look at the moon through a telescope was not Galileo, as is commonly believed, but an Englishman who knew Shakespeare and had a part in the Gunpowder Plot. While some of the story of the modern moon race may be known, the first moon race to map its surface has not been charted before, and is one of the most dramatic and unexpected stories in science. The recent discovery of ice hidden in the moon's polar regions opens up new possibilities for space travel that mean it is essential that mankind returns there if we are ever to journey to the rest of the solar system.

Book excerpt: Covering secret societies, mysterious ancient traditions, and the often-mistaken history of the world's religious symbols, this book takes readers on a tour through the fascinating world of religious symbolism and reveals the most mysterious and misunderstood facets of religion. Hidden Religion: The Greatest Mysteries and Symbols of the World's Religious Beliefs not only explores the history and origins of widely recognizable symbols, like the Christian cross and the Star of David, but also introduces readers to more obscure symbols from religious traditions around the world—even defunct ones like those of the ancient Aztec and Mayan societies. In addition, the book discusses the "religious secrets" found in the major religions, including secret societies of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and Buddhism. Containing more than 170 entries, the encyclopedia is organized by religious category, such as Abrahamic, East Asian, and African Diasporic religions, then alphabetically within each category. Each entry is prefaced with a short introduction that explains where and when the religious tradition originated and describes the religion today. This information is followed by an analysis of the historical development and use of symbols along with an explanation of connections between symbols used by different religions, such as shared astrological symbolism in the form of moon, sun, or star motifs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a fresh look at Tolkien’s literary artistry from the points of view of both linguistics and literary history, with the aim of shedding light on the literary techniques used in The Lord of the Rings. The authors study Tolkien’s use of words, style, narrative techniques, rhetoric and symbolism to highlight his status as literary artist. Dirk Siepmann uses a corpus stylistic approach to analyse Tolkien’s vocabulary and syntax, while Thomas Kullmann uses discourse theory, literary history and concepts of intertextuality to explore Tolkien’s literary techniques, relating them to the history of English fiction and poetry. Issues discussed include point of view, speeches, story-telling, landscape descriptions, the poems inserted into the body of the narrative, and the role of language in the characterization of the novel’s protagonists. This book will be of particular interest to students and scholars of literature, corpus linguistics and stylistics, as well as Tolkien fans and specialists.
