Anschließend werden die rechtlichen Grundlagen im Rahmen der Elternschaft von Menschen mit geistiger Behinderung dargestellt und der aktuelle Forschungsstand zu Kindern behinderter Eltern skizziert. Anschließend folgen mögliche Handlungsansätze für die Arbeit als Sozialarbeiter/-in.

Jedoch führt eine Defizitorientierung leicht dazu, dass die positiven Eigenschaften des Menschen mit Behinderung vernachlässigt werden. Dann werden die Stärken und Fähigkeiten, die der Mensch mit geistiger Behinderung in anderen Bereichen – die eventuell für die Elternschaft bedeutend sein können – aufweist, nicht mehr beachtet.
