Book Synopsis A Woman's Right to Know by : Jesse Olszynko-Gryn
Download or read book A Woman's Right to Know written by Jesse Olszynko-Gryn and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2023-12-12 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of pregnancy testing, and how it transformed from an esoteric laboratory tool to a commonplace of everyday life. Pregnancy testing has never been easier. Waiting on one side or the other of the bathroom door for a “positive” or “negative” result has become a modern ritual and rite of passage. Today, the ubiquitous home pregnancy test is implicated in personal decisions and public debates about all aspects of reproduction, from miscarriage and abortion to the “biological clock” and IVF. Yet, only three generations ago, women typically waited not minutes but months to find out whether they were pregnant. A Woman’s Right to Know tells, for the first time, the story of pregnancy testing—one of the most significant and least studied technologies of reproduction. Focusing on Britain from around 1900 to the present day, Jesse Olszynko-Gryn shows how demand shifted from doctors to women, and then goes further to explain the remarkable transformation of pregnancy testing from an obscure laboratory service to an easily accessible (though fraught) tool for every woman. Lastly, the book reflects on resources the past might contain for the present and future of sexual and reproductive health. Solidly researched and compellingly argued, Olszynko-Gryn demonstrates that the rise of pregnancy testing has had significant—and not always expected—impact and has led to changes in the ways in which we conceive of pregnancy itself.

Book Synopsis Weaving Self-Evidence by : Claude Rosental
Download or read book Weaving Self-Evidence written by Claude Rosental and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-09 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of theorems in logic is generally thought to be a solitary and purely cerebral activity, and therefore unobservable by sociologists. In Weaving Self-Evidence, French sociologist Claude Rosental challenges this notion by tracing the history of one well-known recent example in the field of artificial intelligence--a theorem on the foundations of fuzzy logic. Rosental's analyses disclose the inherently social nature of the process by which propositions in logic are produced, disseminated, and established as truths. Rosental describes the different phases of the emergence of the theorem on fuzzy logic, from its earliest drafts through its publication and diffusion, discussion and reformulation, and eventual acceptance by the scientific community. Through observations made at major universities and scholarly conferences, and in electronic forums, he looks at the ways students are trained in symbolic manipulations and formal languages and examines how researchers work, interact, and debate emerging new ideas. By carefully analyzing the concrete mechanisms that lead to the collective development and corroboration of proofs, Rosental shows how a logical discovery and its recognition within the scholarly community are by no means the product of any one individual working in isolation, but rather a social process that can be observed and studied. Weaving Self-Evidence will interest students and researchers in sociology and the history and philosophy of science and technology, and anyone curious about how scientists work.

Download or read book Queen of the Burglars written by Shayne Davidson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-07-23 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in the mid-nineteenth century, Sophie Lyons was a master thief, con artist, blackmailer and smuggler. Much of her success as a criminal was due to the fact that she was fearless, reckless, sharp and cunning--everything a woman of her time was not supposed to be. As a young child, Sophie's parents forced her to steal when she showed a talent for pickpocketing. Strong-willed and smart, she blossomed into a beautiful teenager who caught the eye of many men in the underworld of New York City. By the time Sophie reached her late teens she was married to her second husband--a notorious bank burglar named Ned Lyons--and was a professional criminal in her own right. Despite her prominent place in crime history, Sophie Lyons has never been the subject of a full-length biography. This book chronicles Sophie's fascinating and tragic life, from her beginnings as a criminal prodigy, through her ingenious escape from Sing Sing prison and her lifelong struggle with mental illness.

Book excerpt: Locksie grew up in the church—against her will—thanks to her holier than thou mother. But now that she's all grown up, she's her own woman, and church is the last thing on her mind. Her live-in boyfriend, Dawson, is the first. Locksie has shared a wonderful three years with Dawson without half the drama that she hears about from the clients in the salon she manages. But lately, Locksie is beginning to feel as though something is missing from her near perfect romance. When she goes to her favorite aunt, Mary, for some guidance, she doesn't like the direction her aunt is trying to steer her in. Locksie quickly realizes, though, that she can run from her problems, but she can't hide from the truth. Hannah is one of Locksie's faithful clients who tries to offer her some advice, but Hannah's got issues of her own. She's struggling to forgive her husband for cheating, all while being a stepmother to the child who was a result of his affair. The child's mother taunts Hannah every chance she gets. In Me, Myself and Him, these women are torn between holding on to the men they love, or having to let go for the one thing that's missing from their lives.
